Page 3: Week 6

This week:

1)Live together, Die alone: Group work involving Sequence 3.

2)But first, these words from our sponsors! (class announcements)

3)Then we Go Hybrid– Home Alone, or with a pal.

Page 4: Week 6

So whasssup?

Sorry for the delay getting the gradebook going, but you should all have an email from a site called “engrade” asking you to come sign up.

That’s our online grade book. It is up-to-date as of Making Project 1 and all the work due for Week 4. Week 5, and with any luck your major project 1, will be added by Wednesday.

Page 5: Week 6

But my grade…

… ain’t so good, Doc.

Damn it, Student! I’m a doctor not a teac… wait.

Many of you have lower grades than you would because you didn’t do your Tumblr posts. Please remember, from our syllabus (see next slide)

Page 6: Week 6

Each of you will be keeping a Tumblr Blog as part of class. Each week I will assign you a top 5 list prompt.

You will write that list as one post. Each week you will make 3 posts:

1) A top 5 list with explanations for your entries (I will assign a list theme each week)2) a response to anything class related (just a reflection on what you’re doing, reading, writing, etc.)3) A multi-media post (either a video link, a piece of audio, or a photo) that you find somehow relevant to class.

Page 7: Week 6

Oops, right?

It’s okay, for now, if you missed that line I emphasized on the last slide. I will let you, before the time that work is due this week, to make up for the missing posts by writing however many posts about stuff from class you need to catch up and posting lots of multi-media stuff this week.

If you need ideas, check out some of the random stuff I’ve thrown on my Tumblr.

Page 8: Week 6

That’s a one time exception. I know, I’m awesome to do it. You’re welcome.

Meanwhile, if I DON’T have a link to your Tumblr on the main page of the site, you never sent me a link (or it got lost in transit) and you obviously got zeroes for all the Tumblr assignments because I can’t see what you did. Please correct that ASAP.

Page 9: Week 6

Okay, now I’m calm…

… so what’s up with our groups this week?

I want you to do your group activity as such.

1) Find two or three classmates with the same, or similar, majors. If you are undecided, look for a group of people with a major you are interested in.

2) Group together and read the next few slides.

Page 10: Week 6

Sequence 3

Because the audio projects will take some time, we’re going to go ahead and start Sequence 3. From this point forward, we’ll have quite a bit of “overlap” time wherein we have two sequences going at once.

Don’t let it confuse you. Make it a priority to think of Sequence 2 as audio and Sequence 3 as a hypertext.

Page 11: Week 6

What?

Please go to Cyberphill.com and read the Sequence 3 page, under sequences.

We will talk about your making project for sequence 3 later in this slide-show (and in my podcast). But for now, I want you to focus on major assignment 3.

Page 12: Week 6

Resources

The key to Sequence 3 is to open the door for Sequence 5 (the research paper). What you need to start thinking about, long and hard, is what work done in your discipline looks like.

You want to maximize the quality of the resources you find for your project.

Page 13: Week 6

A hypertext?

Yes. The best way to think of a hypertext is to imagine a website. It doesn’t HAVE to be a website, but that’s what hypertext does.

So what you’ll be creating for this assignment is a technologically smart version of an annotated bibliography. You will find your five best resources (and don’t take the first five you find– look for five good resources) and you will make them accessible to people via linking.

Page 14: Week 6

You will also…

… write small narrative pieces to explain why you selected the resource and why it is important.

I will offer an example of this later on, but the key you need to think about for the assignment, right now, is where you can find good resources and how you can present them in a way that is useful and accessible.

Page 15: Week 6

So we’re all here …

Here is what I’d like you to do as a group. 1) Define your academic field/discipline. This is for you to handle, depending on the group. For example, if you have a pre-med, a pre-vet, and a nursing student, you can call yourselves “medical.” If you have an English ed major, an English major, and a professional writing major, you can call yourselves “writers” or “language artists”

Page 16: Week 6

Then…

2) Once you define yourselves, talk for 10-15 minutes about what MATTERS in your field to the best of your knowledge right now.3) Craft a list. This list will be called “Preconceptions About Our Field”– there should be at least 10 points but no more than 15. They need not be in a rank order.4) Your chosen recorder will deliver this list, with all of your names, to me by 11:59 pm Tuesday.

Page 17: Week 6

Quick example…

For my field, just a few things to give you an idea:1) The amount of expertise a person has with a

specific thing matters to how we interpret their understanding of it (i.e. a person studying knitting better know how to knit).

2) Newer material is generally considered more important than older. Not always, but usually.

3) It is important that a person talking about a specific thing know the experts on that thing and references them in the project.

Page 18: Week 6

So rock that…

And the rest of class will be about workin’ solo.

See the next set of slides for your Hybrid assignments.

Page 19: Week 6

Before we go hybrid:

1) Did your group finish, or did you plan a time to finish?

2) Did the recorder get your name? If not, I can’t give you credit.

3) Did you read the slides about the Tumblr posts? Please don’t end up with a D at mid-term because you forgot to do some easy posts. I will feel so bad for you.

Hybrid in 3, 2, 1…

Page 21: Week 6

First thing…

Making project 2– your mix CD, will be due on October 20th. Because these are likely to be large, you may either upload them to my drop box (it can handle it– but it might take a while to upload) or you may burn them to CD and put them in my mailbox which is in the WRAC offices on the second floor of Bessey Hall.

Or you can get done early and bring it to class on the 18th.

Page 22: Week 6

I’m not going to type a transcript of what I said in the recording about hypertexts, so make sure you listen carefully. It’s important information.

Page 23: Week 6

Okay then, Making 3

As it says on the sequence 3 page, your third making project will be based on your major. So what I need you to do is email me ASAP (by Sunday, but sooner is better) with the following:

1) Your major2) The job you want to get when you graduate

From there, I will help you to plan a custom making project.

Page 24: Week 6

Photo editing: Movie Posters

Just as we are learning audio editing, we shall also learn to edit photos (and finally, later, video).

This activity will require Adobe Photoshop. It is on the computers in our classroom and in most labs. You can also DL a 30 day demo for free from www.adobe.com

If you know another photo editor, you can use it. But I’ll be explaining from Photoshop.

Page 25: Week 6

Resources

You will need 2 things to start this project1) A movie poster you like, with people

appearing on the poster (or a person).2) A picture of you.

And, of course, you need time and a computer with a photo editing program (like I said, in this case, Photoshop).

And so here we go.

When you finish

Put your poster on your Tumblr blog. It will be a fourth entry for this week.

Page 30: Week 6

Readings

For this week I want us to do some more “reading” about audio. In other words, I want us to listen to some specific audio to get a sense of how things can and do work in that setting.

The things I want you to listen to are on the schedule page as links. Please listen to all of them.

Page 31: Week 6

LISTEN TO ALL OF THESE OVER HEADPHONES IF YOU CAN.

CLOSE YOUR EYES.

TRUST ME. IT WILL HELP.

Page 32: Week 6

Forums

There will be two forums this week.

The first one will be related to the first three readings. What I want you to do is select one of the things I had you look at/listen to and think specifically about how it uses ambient noise (meaning not the primary vocal) to achieve its effect.

Page 33: Week 6

The Second One

Will refer to the second six readings (they are songs and their covers). In this case, I want you to choose to write about any one song (so two versions) and reflect on what the qualities of each one are.

In other words– what does the change in tone/style do to the content of the message?

Page 34: Week 6

Tumblr

You have a total of 4 Tumblr entries this week.

There is the poster, which was assigned here. There’s your one multimedia post, and your post about class.

And your list for this week: 5 Places That Are Tied to a Specific Memory (and what that memory is/why it is tied to that place)

Page 35: Week 6

Next Week…

Part of our work will be to do another conference. The conferences were good, for those of you who showed up/planned them well.

This time, though, I want all of you to check to make sure you have access to AIM beforehand (so you don’t have a download problem the day of your conference). I also want you to do the following:

Page 36: Week 6

PrepHave an idea, or ideas, for your major project 2 and 3 that you can discuss with me.

Write 5 questions you have.

Write down 5 things we’ve talked about in class that you are curious about.

Write down 3 things that are going well.

Write down 3 things you are concerned/worried about.

Page 37: Week 6

And the rest is silence…
