GOVERNOR'S SERIES RECAPThe UNLV Rebels kicked off the 2013-14 Governor's Series with a 3-0 sweep of in-state rival Nevada, Reno on Sept. 26.

The volleyball win was the ninth straight for the Scarlet & Gray in the head-to-head history between the two programs and 16th overall in 23 tries.

Last year, UNLV claimed the inaugural 2012-13 Governor's Series title with a 27-point differen-tial (37.5-10.5) between themselves and the Nevada, Reno Wolf Pack.

The competition, which is presented by NV Energy and sponsored by Barrick Gold, was launched by Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval on Oct. 8, 2012 between the two universities.

2013 SCHEDULEThrough six weeks of play, the UNLV Rebels have a 8-6 overall record with four of those losses - Arizona State, Ohio, Kansas State and Western Kentucky - coming against teams receiv-ing votes in the Oct. 7 AVCA Div. I Top 25 Poll. In addition to those four teams, Colorado State, who entered the rankings a couple of weeks ago, is 13th in this week's edition. ASU and Ohio are 16th and 18th, respectively.

Prior to the start of the season, the poll featured four teams - WKU, ASU, KSU and CSU - on UNLV's 2013 schedule. WKU was the only one of the four to sit inside the Top 25 at #21, while the other three were in the "receiving votes" cat-egory.

WKU moved up to 16th overall in the Sept. 2 poll, while ASU and Ohio were added to the mix.

A week later (Sept. 9), WKU fell back to #21 and the other four squads remained on the outside looking in.

On Sept. 16, WKU dropped out of the poll and into the "receiving votes" category, while ASU (18th), CSU (22nd) and Ohio (24th ) made their Top 25 debut. WKU and KSU were, hypotheti-cally, ranked 29th and 30th, respectively.

Since that Sept. 16 poll, all three ranked teams are still in the Top 25, while WKU and KSU are still "receiving votes."

BLOCKING TO THE TOPMadeline Westman closed out the 2012 season ranked second overall in UNLV's career record book with 337 assisted blocks. After one week-end of action in 2013, Westman became the pro-gram's all-time leader in the category with 352 assisted putbacks when she surpassed Lauren Miramontes' (2007-07).

Miramontes concluded her career with her name atop all three blocking categories - total, solo and assisted - in the program's record Despite falling to second in assisted blocks, she maintains the top spot in the other two marks: 426 total blocks and 80 solo blocks.

Westman, who picked up her first two solo blocks last week, has 29 total blocks this year to push her career total to 423 and her assisted tally to 364.

Besides ranking first in assisted blocks and sec-ond in total blocks, Westman is tied for fifth in solo blocks (59).

Westman, who picked up her first two solo blocks two weeks ago, has 30 total blocks this year to push her career total to 424 and her assisted tally to 365.

Besides ranking first in assisted blocks and sec-ond in total blocks, Westman is tied for fifth in solo blocks (59).

THE OTHER SIDE OF THE NETBesides ranking highly in all three of UNLV's career blocking categories, Madeline Westman has maintained her status in hitting efficiency while moving into the top 10 in kills.

With help from her .349 hitting clip this season, Westman has stayed moved to fifth overall in hit-ting efficiency with a .284 average.

Westman moved up to ninth in kills with 849 to supplant Christel Eves tally of 829 amassed from 1996-99.

DIGGING UP THE CHARTSAllison Davies closed out the 2012 season ranked seventh overall in UNLV's career record book with 827 digs. After six weeks and 14 matches of action in 2013, Davies has moved up to third place with the help of 186 digs to give her 1,013 for her career.

Davies has made a jump of four spots this season alone and surpassed Melody Nua (981, 2005-08), Brittani Lumsden (922, 2004-07), Kela Lau Hee (878, 2007-10) and Maria Aladjova (839, 2004-07).

ASSISTING OTHERSStephanie Thelen closed out the 2012 season ranked fifth overall in UNLV's career record book with 1,367 assists. After six weeks and 14 matches of action in 2013, Thelen has moved up to fourth place with the help of 514 assists.

Thelen surpassed Maria Julia Goes (1998-2001), who sat in fourth place with 1,607 career digs, three weekends ago in the charts.

For her career, Thelen has 1,881 assists and trails Meri-de Boyer's third-place tally of 2,790 that were amassed from 1996-98.

Thelen had 110 assists during her freshman cam-paign in 2010, but her output increased immense-ly a year later when she took over as the primary setter. In 2011, she had 1,153 assists, which were the sixth-most tallied by a Rebel setter in the program's history. Last year, she had 104 assists, while playing as an outside hitter.

THREE & OUTThe UNLV Rebels have played 14 matches thus far in the 2013 season with nine of those only going to three sets.

In the "Modern Era" of the Rebel volleyball pro-gram - 2006 to the present - UNLV has begun a year with at least nine of its first 14 matches only going to three sets.

The 1999, 2000, '03 and '09 squads had previ-ously been the only instances that a team had played at least nine three-setters in its first 14 matches prior to 2013.

The 2000 edition leads the quintet with 12 out of its first 14 going three frames. The '99 and '03 squads both played 10 out of 14, while '09 and '13 are nine out of 14.

Since 1996, the '00 and '06 teams played a pro-gram-best 19 three-set matches, while the '08 squad played 18.

If the 2013 squad keeps it's current pace, it will set a new record with 19 matches only going the minimum distance.

A WINNING FIRST SETThe UNLV Rebels have won the first set in seven of their 14 matches this season. After going up by a 1-0 score, UNLV has won six of those seven matches in three sets with the lone loss coming in five frames to Kansas State (Aug. 31) in the de facto UNLV Invitational championship match.

On the flip side, UNLV is 2-5 in matches it has lost the first stanza. Both of those wins came in four sets against Virginia and San Diego State.

In the Fredrick Era (2011-present), the Rebels are 32-6 when they win the first frame. On the other hand, the Scarlet & Gray is 8-28 when its oppo-nent jumps out to a 1-0 lead.

WINNING THE FIRST TWOThe UNLV Rebels have won the first two sets in a match four times this season for a 4-0 record. UNLV has carried a 2-0 lead into the intermis-sion against Cal State Fullerton, Portland, Seattle and Nevada, Reno and won each contest.

On the flip side, UNLV is 0-5 in matches it has lost the first two stanzas.

In the Fredrick Era (2011-present), the Rebels are 26-0 when they win the first two frames. On the other hand, the Scarlet & Gray is 0-20 when its opponent jumps out to a 2-0 lead.

SPLIT DECISIONSThe UNLV Rebels have only faced five occasions early in the 2013 season where they have been deadlocked at 1-set apiece against an opponent. UNLV lost the first one to Kansas State in five sets, but have since defeated Virginia, San Diego State, Southern Utah and San Jose State in four.

In the Fredrick Era (2011-present), the Rebels are 14-14 in matches that are tied going into intermis-sion.

WINNING TWO OF THREEThe UNLV Rebels have only faced four occasions early in the 2013 season where they have been ahead 2-1 against an opponent. UNLV lost the first set to both Virginia and San Diego State and the second to Southern Utah and San Jose State, but went ahead en route to four-set wins, while they

On the flip side, UNLV is 0-1 in a match (Kansas State) it has lost two of the first three stanzas.

In the Fredrick Era (2011-present), the Rebels are 20-2 when they take a 2-1 lead. On the other hand, the Scarlet & Gray is 1-18 when its opponent jumps out to a 2-1 lead.

GOING THE DISTANCEThe UNLV Rebels have only faced one occasion early in the 2013 season where they have faced a 2-2 stalemate. UNLV rallied to tie that match up at 2-all, but wound up losing in five to Kansas State.

In the Fredrick Era (2011-present), the Rebels are 8-9 in matches they have faced 2-all ties. In fact, the 2011 squad set a program record with 11 five-setters, as they went 5-6 that year.

UNLV PICKED THIRDThe UNLV volleyball team was predicted to finish the 2013 season in third place according to the Mountain West's Preseason Poll. Dating back to the MW's inaugural year of 1999, the Rebels had never been selected to finish higher than fourth place in any season.

San Diego State, who earned a share of the 2012 conference title, unseated Colorado State from the top spot in the poll that was voted on by the league's 11 head coaches. Dating back to 2010, CSU had been chosen to finish first overall for three consecutive years.

After SDSU and CSU, the third through sixth slots are separated by a mere five points. UNLV is third with 70 points, while newcomer Utah State is fourth with 68. New Mexico and Fresno State were distanced by the slimmest of margins one point - in fifth (66) and sixth (65), respectively. Boise State came in seventh (51), while Wyoming (37), San Jose State (27), Air Force (17) and Nevada, Reno (15) rounded out the poll.

WESTMAN MAKES TEAMBesides voting on the preseason poll, the Mountain West's nine head coaches also chose seven indi-

viduals for the league's preseason team.

UNLV's Madeline Westman was the Rebels lone representative on a squad comprised of two mem-bers from both New Mexico and San Diego State. Colorado State and Fresno State had one represen-tative apiece on the team.

Westman, a two-time all-conference selection, enters her senior year ranked second in both total blocks and assisted blocks in the program's record book. She is also sixth in total blocks and fifth in hitting efficiency.

Besides Westman, the other members of the 2013 All-MW Preseason Team are: Deedra Foss (CSU), Korrin Wild (FS), Chantale Riddle (UNM), Raegan Shelton (SDSU), Johnna Fouch (SDSU) and Miquella Lovato (UNM).

Fouch was chosen as the MW's Preseason Player of the Year after helping the Aztecs earn a berth in last year's NCAA Tournament and a share of the 2012 league title.

She has coached two student-athletes to Mountain West All-Conference honors with Madeline Westman earning recognition in both 2011 and '12, while Kinsey Caldwell, the league's freshman of the year, did so in 2012. Besides a third-place finish in MW play, the 2012 season was one for the record books beginning with the team's 18 wins ranking as the third most in program his-tory. The .620 winning percentage was fourth best, while the 11 home victories and 10 conference wins both ranked as the third best in their respective categories. In her first season at UNLV, Fredrick went 14-17 and led her squad to the champion-ship match of the 2011 MW Tournament. The Rebels entered the tournament as the seventh seed and racked up two quick victories - a 3-0 win over #2 San Diego State and a 3-1 triumph over #3 TCU - before a loss to Colorado State in the finale. Three Rebels - Westman, Candice Thomas and Stephanie Thelen - earned spots on the conference's all-tournament team following the Scarlet & Gray's Cinderella run to the final. Prior to taking over the reins of the volleyball program, Fredrick spent one year (2012) as the head coach at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, following a stint as the assistant director of the Wartburg-Waverly Sports and Wellness Center. Then, in 1995, she took home Pac-10 Coach of the Year honors. She also earned 1995 AVCA District VIII Coach of the Year recognition. She has notched 20 or more wins seven times - all at Washington State - and also coached three All-Americans (Sarah Silvernail, Keri Killebrew and Stephanie Pake) and two conference players of the year, Silvernail (Pac-10) and Kim Benesh (Big Sky). In 1992, she led Washington State to a perfect 6-0 record for the National Invitational Volleyball Championship in Kansas City, Mo. All six victories came via 3-0 sweeps. Westman and Davies have also been recognized for their academics by the MW, as the duo has been named to the 2011-12 and 2012-13 Scholar-Athlete Awards. Over the past two years, Westman, Davies and Thelen have earned Fall Academic All-MW Team honors, while Katlin Winters (2012), Sekola Falemaka (2011), Daryn Glenn (2011), Taylor Richard (2011) and Layne Wilson (2011) have done so once apiece. A 1974 graduate of Augustana College in Rock Island, Ill., Fredrick began coaching volleyball at Davenport Central High School that same year until 1982. She led the school to a state championship in 1981 with a perfect 33-0 record. She followed that up with a three-year stint as a head coach for the United States Volleyball Association Junior Development team in Eastern Iowa. She broke into the collegiate coaching ranks in 1982 when she was hired as an assistant coach at Iowa. She helped guide the Hawkeyes to two third-place finishes in the Big Ten in 1983 and 1984.
