After a workmanlike performance forthe first-half of the season, which in-cluded six straight wins and its first-everconference championship in the NCMCsince 2008, the Boonville Pirates footballteam also knows that what happened forthe first-seven games of the season mat-ters little as they begin the Class 3 Dis-trict 8 playoffs this coming Friday nightin California. As the returning district champions

from last year, the Pirates will also gointo Friday night’s game against the Pin-tos with the best record of the four teamsat 6-1. California, Eldon and Versaillesare all 4-3.But like any coach, Boonville Pirates

football coach Devin Brown said every-body is 0-0 come Friday.“I don’t care about records,” Brown

said. “You never know who is going towin what. Last year California playedeverybody tough and they beat Versaillesand Versailles and Boonville played aclose game. You can throw all that stuffout because you just never know andcan’t count records. Even though we mayhave the best record going into the dis-trict playoffs, I would say anybody canwin it. I say that every year because youjust never know and there are surprises.Teams are not supposed to win and wedid it when we were at Mexico. It’s justone of those things where you just haveto be ready to play.”California coach Marty Albertson said

obviously Boonville is coming in as thefavorite.“I think the other teams are all pretty

close matched and on any given night Ithink anybody can beat anybody,” Albert-son said. “I sure hope its a close game, but we have to contain their offense andthrow the ball a little ourselves on of-fense.”While the Pirates escaped with a 7-0

win over the Moberly Spartans to finishthe NCMC undefeated at 6-0, the Cali-fornia Pintos had it a little easier whilebeating the Knob Noster Panthers 49-9.However, Albertson said his Pintos

only led in that game by a score of 16-9at the half.“We started out slow but ended up the

second half playing pretty well,” Albert-son said of the game against Knob. “Wemade a lot of mistakes in the first halfwith three fumbles and a few penaltiesthat slowed us down.”But even then the Pintos still managed

to rack up over 360 yards rushing theball on 48 carries while passing for 62yards for a total of 423 yards in total of-fense.Junior running back Anthony Price led

the ground game for California with 18carries for 141 yards while ChristopherAllee had seven carries for 48 yards, Wal-ter Juarez five for 33 yards, JasonWolverton 10 for 51 yards and Dylan Al-bertson six for 35 yards.Albertson also completed 2 of 6 passes

for 23 yards while Grant Burger hit on 3of 7 passes for 39 yards.Meanwhile, on the defensive side of

the ball, sophomore linebacker JerryLutz finished the game with eight tack-les and two interceptions while SethFairchild and Logan Rowles each had

five tackles and Luke Burger, Efrain andAlbertson with four tackles each. The Pintos have also put up some

pretty good numbers for the season, withPrice leading the way with 92 carries for611 yards and seven touchdowns. But notfar behind is Allee with 54 carries for 403yards and five scores.Albertson, meanwhile, is currently the

leading passer for the season with 214yards on 18 of 32 attempts with onetouchdown and two interceptions.Burger has 188 yards on 20 of 32 at-tempts with three touchdowns and onepick.Of course when the Pintos throw the

ball, Albertson or Burger will look to sen-ior receiver Phillip Longan as the go-toguy. And why not. After all, Longan islisted at 6’-6”. But more importantly, hehas 10 catches for 191 yards and threetouchdowns. Senior tight end AlecRamsdell also has over 100 yards receiv-ing for the season with eight catches for149 yards.Nonetheless at 4-3 on the season, Al-

bertson said his team has played well attimes.

“I feel like we have played ok,” Albert-son said. “Obviously we have a lot ofyoung kids in there but we have playedpretty competitively all the way through. We had close games against Osage andBlair Oaks. We trailed 21-14 with fiveminutes left to go in the ballgame againstOsage and then threw an interceptionthat they ran back for 80 yards and thenthey scored another one at the end tomake it look like it wasn’t a real closegame. We also played Blair Oaks to aclose game. We also lost to Moberly inthe first game of the season. We weredown 14-7 in the fourth quarter so wefeel like we have been in every game thatwe have played and again I think as thekids have gotten experience they haveplayed better. We feel like we have gottengood effort all year long so that is a goodthing.”As for the Pirates in last week’s game

against Moberly, Brown said defensivelythe team played really well while pitch-ing a shutout but the offense struggledwhile managing only 113 yards in totaloffense.

“Moberly played very good defensively andkept us in-check and kept Wes Davis in-check,” Brown said. “It’s one of those thingswhere good teams find a way and that’s kindof what we did. Offensively it was our worstgame of the year but we are going to get peo-ple’s best shot because we are pretty decentthis year, and people are going to play up tous so we have to find ways to move the ball.”Of course after dropping their first game of

the season against the Pleasant Hill Roosters27-16, the Pirates have been perfect sincethen with two shutouts. However the biggestwin thus far came in Week 6 on the roadagainst the Hannibal Pirates, whereBoonville trailed 7-0 at the half only to rallyback in the second half for a 20-14 victory. The win also snapped a three-game skidagainst Hannibal and the Pirates 21-gamewin streak in the NCMC, which dated back tothe 2007 season.“It’s like we tell the kids our main goal is to

win districts and move on to the playoffs,”Brown said. “We have work to do and every-body always talks about the season startingover now which they do because these threegames are the ones that matter. We have toget ready for California and hopefully winthree games to put us in the playoffs.”Offensively, Brown said the Pintos run a lit-

tle bit of the same stuff as Boonville. He saidthey will run a double tight and a lot of veeralong with splitback veer and inside veer. They will also run fullback traps, he said. “They have a 6-6 wide receiver that we

have to account for and they have a quickrunning back, a quarterback that is good andan offensive line that is big and physical,”Brown said. “This is not going to be what theyhave played in the past. It’s going to be a goodballgame.”As for California’s defense, Brown said they

run a little bit of everything.“We don’t know for sure what they are

going to be in,” Brown said. “They run cover 8and a lot of man. We do know that. Defen-sively, they have some active linebackers andget after it up front. We are going to have toprepare for multiple fronts with them and beable to block it.”Coach Albertson said obviously Boonville

has good size up front and they have a greatquarterback and a running back that hasspeed.“They also have some talent on the outside

at wide receiver,” Albertson said. “I think theyare an awfully good football team. Defen-sively, I know they flow to the ball real well.Again, their quarterback plays middle line-

backer so he flows to the ball real well withthe other linebackers on defense. We have tobe able to stay on our blocks and go until thewhistle blows because they show a lot of teamquickness.”With only three starters returning on the

offensive side of the football and four back ondefense, Albertson said it has taken his teama while to get adjusted to the game. The Pintos have also been streaky this sea-

son. After the season-opening loss againstMoberly 21-6, California went on a three-game win streak by beating North Callaway43-7 and both Warsaw and MontgomeryCounty by the identical scores of 48-0. Then, after losing back-to-back games against BlairOaks 29-7 and Osage 35-14, California wonlast week over a downtrodden Knob Nosterteam 49-9.“I feel like we have played well at times but

we have also been inconsistent, especially inthe games we lost and obviously in the gamewe have won,” Albertson said. “In our losseswe have been inconsistent with turnovers andthat is what kind of slowed us down. Defen-sively, we have played pretty well. We startfive sophomores on defense so we are obvi-ously young but I think they have grown up

over the last seven games. The key for us inthis game is that we can’t have mistakes.Again, against Blair Oaks we had someturnovers and against Osage we had five andagainst good teams you can’t do that.”Like the Pirates, the Pintos qualified for the

playoffs last year by finishing 2-1 in the dis-trict but fell in the sectional round of the stateplayoffs against the Owensville Dutchmen49-19. After Friday night’s game against

Boonville, the Pintos will gear up for both adistrict and conference game at home againstthe Versailles Tigers. Then, on Friday, Oct.28, California will closeout the season on theroad against the Eldon Mustangs. After the first-seven games of the season,

the Pirates are currently averaging 336.4yards per game while holding their oppo-nents to 191 yards of total offense.Boonville is also averaging 27.14 points per

game while holding opponents right at 9.0ppg.Senior quarterback Wes Davis continues to

lead the Pirates in rushing with 146 carriesfor 1,086 yards and 14 touchdowns whilecompleting 20 of 60 passes for 262 yardswith two touchdowns and four interceptions.

Senior Holden Hinkle is the leading receiverfor Boonville with 10 catches for 158 yardsand one touchdown.Meanwhile, on the defensive side of the

ball, Davis currently has 93 tackles with 55solo stops, 38 assisted tackles, seven tacklesfor losses, two fumble recoveries and oneforced fumble. Junior linebacker JalenPoindexter is also having a stellar season with73 tackles, with 40 solos, 30 assisted, 12 tack-les for losses, three sacks, two fumble recov-eries and one forced fumble. Hinkle is theteam leader with two interceptions.

By Boonville football coach Devin BrownON OFFENSE...

We need to get our ground gamegoing again. Obviously we are not abig passing team but we need to be

able to move the ball and run the ball.

We did well with the turnovers lastweek but we still had too many penal-ties and that was offense and defense.

ON DEFENSE...

We have to be able to control theirground game because they like to runthe ball as well. We need to be able tohandle them physically up front and be

able to shut down the run.

Penalties again. We need to be able tocontrol that because teams are start-ing to go on two with us because they

know that we get off the ball so we have to beable to control that.
