Explore it! Look at the picture. Where do you think this is? How do you know? What clues are there in the picture? Does this look like anywhere that you have been? Can you see any animals there? What type of animals might be hiding in this place? Talk to your grown up about what you have seen and what you know about this place.

The Princesses castle! Princess Mirror-Belle boasts she lives in a very posh palace with maids and guards to hold her father’s beard! Design your own princess castle or palace and think about your use of 3-D shapes. Talking Together Have a look at the palace below –would this be fit for you as a king, queen or princess? Look at what shapes you can see?

Talking Together 3-D Creations Your palace may be made of things around your house to stick together –empty loo rolls/cereal boxes etc. Could you make a palace using different 3-D objects from around your house? Spotty mistakes

The project this week aims to provide opportunities for your child to learn more about the world’s rainforests. Learning may focus on the plants, animals and insects that inhabit the rainforest, food that originates there and weather patterns. It could look at plants and animals that can be found in the garden too. Which Animals Live in the Rainforest?

● Watch this video about animals in the rainforest. Can your child tell you about some of the animals that live in the rainforest? Can they remember any facts? Can they describe the animals?.

● Ask your child to make their own explorers outfit (e.g. binoculars, sunhat, backpack) and head out to the garden or on your daily walk. What creatures can your child find? Are they similar to any you might see in the rainforest? Take photographs.

Illustrate it! Thinking about yesterday’s illustration, lots of you thought it was a jungle. What might you see, hear, smell and touch in the jungle? Can you describe what you think the jungle might look like? It’s your chance to draw, paint or collage a Jungle scene. You might want to do a chalk drawing outside or use old food wrappings to make a collage with different textures or paint, crayon, pastel, felt tip. You decide! Can you share your exciting artwork on our Facebook page to inspire your friends?

Adding up those spots!

Princess Mirror-Belle and Ellen have a lot of spots! Can you find out how many pox spots they have?

STEM: Rainforest Materials ● A rainforest has lots of tall trees and grows in

warm countries that have a lot of rain. People use the wood from the trees to make paper and furniture. They also take lots of ingredients like sugar and oil to make food. Here you can find a list of food and ingredients that grow in rainforests.

● What plants can we find in the garden? Can you name the different parts of a plant? Stem, leaves, branches, roots, flower? Try using some of the materials found in your garden to make something useful. For example, a nature paint brush.

Draw a Picture of a Rainforest Animal on the Computer

● Ask your child to draw a picture of a rainforest animal. Can they use computing software to recreate their picture? Try Paint.

Talk about it!

Which animals live in the jungle? How do you know? Can you think of a way to find out the types of animals that live in the jungle environment? Think about the animals that you might see in the trees, on the ground, in the swamps and rivers.

Talk to your grown up about the animals that live in the jungle. If you want to find out more or do your own research, there are some useful websites.

https://www.scienceforkidsclub.com/jungles.html

https://www.coolkidfacts.com/jungle-facts/

How to make a cure Can you remember all the things Princess Mirror-Belle did to make a cure for the dragon pox? Can you put these in order using mathematical language?

Play the Animal Jungle Quiz ● Listen to the clues. Can you match the clue

to the correct animal? ● Click here to create your own jungle. Drag

the animals onto the picture. Where do you think the animals should go? Why? i.e. on the ground, in the trees…

Writing Challenge

Why don’t you write a list of the animals you know or have found out by research that live in a jungle? Use your sound mats and fantastic phonic skills to help you with your writing.

How would you cure the dragon pox? The Princess uses lots of strange things for a cure! What other things in your bathroom could you use to make a cure for the dragon Pox? Talking Together Mirror-Belle had 7 different ways, but we can do better. Help us be a brave knight and save the princess by making a cure! You will need 2 of each item to make 20 things for your cure. These things could be from your bathroom or anywhere around the house.

A house fit for a Princess. Can you find the King and Queen in this next unusual castle? There is 1 King and Queen but there might be more than 1 Prince and Princess. They will all be wearing a crown! How many can you find? There might also be some other creatures!

Thursday 25th June

Imagine it! Imagine you are going on a Jungle adventure. What would you need to pack in your rucksack? Grab a rucksack or bag at home and collect all the things you will need for your jungle adventure, then show your friends what you need to take. The challenge here is to think really carefully what you will need, whether it will fit in your rucksack and explain why you need it. I think my soft toys will have to stay at home for this adventure, but I need to take my torch because it will be dark in the jungle at night time.

A different kind of number line! Make number tracks with princess Mirror-Belle’s last cure for the dragon pox!

Talking Together

Once you have your number track use it to go and see what else around your house is 10 or 20 sheets long. Are you 20 sheets tall? Take this further. Rip your sheets into ones and muddle them up! Can you put them in the correct order?

Make a specific mistake and see if your grown ups can tell you where it is?

Make a Collage of a Rainforest Animal ● Use collage to create your own rainforest

animal using recycled materials from around the house. Share your finished creation to inspire others on Twitter at #TheLearningProjects.

Page 7: Week beginning 22 June Theme “Rainforest · STEM: Rainforest Materials A rainforest has lots of tall trees and grows in warm countries that have a lot of rain. People use the wood

Make yourself into Ellen! How much toilet roll will it take for you to cover different parts of your body?

Talking Together First pick which parts of your body to cover! Wrap your toilet roll around that bit. Rip your last sheet. Count how many sheets it took to wrap that body part! How many sheets is your leg? How many sheets does it take to go round your head? Will anyone do the whole Princess and wrap all of you? (Of course return your sheets to the bathroom once you’ve finished and please don’t take the last one!)

Literacy Maths Creative Challenges

Friday 26th June

Create it! Your teachers are really missing you now that you have gone on your jungle adventures. You could cheer them up by writing a letter or sending a postcard to show them all the things you have seen. You could draw them a picture of your jungle adventure, or write to tell them what you have seen or experienced. Your teacher would love to hear all about your adventures and so would your friends!

Doubles! Princess Mirror-Belle is the reflection of Ellen –a double! Can you make the reflection of her into a double and tell us how many that is?

Make an Animal Home Create an animal home e.g. a bug hotel using things from the garden. Use a plastic tub or cardboard box. Ask your child what the animal will need in the home in order to survive.

Page 8: Week beginning 22 June Theme “Rainforest · STEM: Rainforest Materials A rainforest has lots of tall trees and grows in warm countries that have a lot of rain. People use the wood

Double my shoe! The girls only had one slipper each! Have a look in your wardrobe or wherever you keep your shoes. How many doubles –pairs can you find? Explore the shoes in your house. They all should be in pairs! Who has the biggest feet? Who has the longest feet? Is this the same? Can you put your pairs of shoes in order of size? Can you make your own shoe shop?

Page 9: Week beginning 22 June Theme “Rainforest · STEM: Rainforest Materials A rainforest has lots of tall trees and grows in warm countries that have a lot of rain. People use the wood

How much would different shoes cost? Bath time! The first thing the Princess does to find a cure is to run a bath! How long does it take to run your bath? Explore full and half full! What containers could you use? You might not want to use the bath like Mirror-Belle. You could try the sink and experiment how many of each different containers it takes to fill it. Which do you think will be the quickest? Why? Will you need more pours of that container if it is bigger or smaller? Happy splashing! Just don’t do what Mirror-Belle did!

Other reading activities:

Monday- Watch Go Jetters: Amazon Rainforest. Can your child tell you where the tree frog was found? What sound did it make? Which rainforest insect steals the picnic? What happens when the tree frogs aren’t there to eat the ants?

Tuesday- Help your child to look through cookery books for a recipe involving cocoa/chocolate. If you have the ingredients, make the sweet treat!

Wednesday- Ask your child to use pictures from a familiar story book to make up their own story or to retell their favourite story.

Thursday- Enjoy listening to online stories together including: Slowly, Slowly, Slowly Said the Sloth and The Tiger Who Came To Tea.

Friday- Ask your child to read these tricky words: I, no, go, to, the, into, he, she, me, we, be. CHALLENGE: Ask your child to find these tricky words in the stories you are reading.

Other writing activities:

Monday- Say or write a list of all the animals you would find in the rainforest. CHALLENGE: Can your child think of an animal for each letter of the alphabet e.g. a=alligator, b=bird.

Tuesday- Talk about the rainforest with your child and ask: What can you see? What can you hear? Ask your child to draw a picture of the rainforest and write a sentence about what they can see or hear.

Wednesday- Use this animated letter formation tool to help your child practise letter formation. You can select those they find most challenging.

Thursday- Using the story The Tiger Who Came To Tea, draw a picture of the tiger and label the picture using words to describe him e.g. stripy fur, sharp teeth.

Friday- Ask your child to create a rainforest animal mask then talk about the sounds that different animals make. CHALLENGE: Can they write a sentence to describe the animal e.g. I like the monkey. He is cheeky. He jumps in the trees.

Phonics activities: CHALLENGE:

Monday- Ask your child to find different things around the house/garden. Can they segment each word into sounds i.e. c-u-p (cup), b-e-d (bed) t-ea (tea), ch-air (chair)? If they are able, they could write these too.

Tuesday- Think of words to describe the rainforest animals - each word should start with the same letter i.e. mad, munching monkey or large, loving lion

Other maths activities:

Monday- Use this tens frame to practise making different amounts. Or, your child can practise making amounts to 10 using different objects from the garden e.g. leaves.

Tuesday- Practise writing the numerals to 10 and then up to 20 if your child is able. You could do this in chalk in the garden, using felt tips, crayons or anything that will engage your child.

Wednesday- Play this Ladybird Spots-Counting, Matching and Ordering Game. You can tailor the difficulty to your child’s level.

Thursday (theme)- Make a garden trail using arrows made from sticks. Ask your child to follow the trail and identify the direction. This could be done on your walk.

Friday- Use a teddy and count forwards and backwards making deliberate mistakes. Can your child spot the mistakes? Mistakes can include omitted numbers, repeated numbers or a number in the wrong place. CHALLENGE: Ask your child to spot the mistake when the numbers are written down.

Page 10: Week beginning 22 June Theme “Rainforest · STEM: Rainforest Materials A rainforest has lots of tall trees and grows in warm countries that have a lot of rain. People use the wood

Wednesday- Daily Phonics - Practise the sounds your child is working on and blend words. This can be oral blending (e.g. spoken out loud a-n-t) or written.

Thursday- Play ‘I Spy in the Rainforest’. ‘I spy, with my little eye, something beginning with t’. CHALLENGE: Change it to ‘I spy, with my little eye, my word includes the digraph ee’ - ‘Tree’.

Friday- Play the Word Machine - Ask your child to read each word carefully. Match the correct word to the picture. If you get it right, you will hear a clap. Click ‘Next’ and have a go at another word.

DON’T FORGET! Sunflower Challenge Take a photograph of your sunflower, with a ruler or tape measure next to it so we can compare our plants. Whose sunflower is the tallest? Why do you think that is? Reception Children Don’t forget to keep checking your potatoes/ vegetables that you have planted. Has anything changed?
