I read literary fiction, which is
novels about ideas, complex issues,
the human condition, etc. Literary
fiction is also novels that focus on
the beauty of writing itself. The
prose is so beautiful, so thoughtful,
that the words roll through your
mind for days, sometimes weeks or
months, much like a song that gets
stuck in your head.
Literary awards, like the Man Book-
er Prize, the Pulitzer Prize, the Bai-
ley’s Women’s Prize, the National
Book Award, and many others, bring
well-deserved attention to literary
novels.
This week the National Book Award

Ponderings
Televised presidential debates have been an important part of
American elections since 1960. The sup-posed purpose of presidential debates is to give voters an opportunity to hear where candidates
stand on the issues and to help voters make a decision about whom they will vote for in No-vember. Below are great de-bate quips:
Gerald Ford: “There is no Soviet domination of East-ern Europe.”
Ronald Reagan: “There you go again.”
Ronald Reagan: “l will not make age an issue of this campaign. I am not going to exploit, for political pur-poses, my opponent’s youth and inexperience.”
Mitt Romney: “I went to a number of women’s groups and said, ‘Can you help us find folks,’ and they brought us whole binders full of women.”
Donald Trump: “Where did you get this?”
