POLICE have charged a 17-year-old P-platerafter a car crashed through the brick fenceof a Heathridge property on Tuesday night.

George Forster-Jones and his wife, whowere inside the Littorina Avenue house atthe time, were fortunate not to have been in-jured when the early model Holden Com-modore sedan smashed through the fenceand came to rest against the front wall.

“We’ve got a study where it impacted; itwent through the fence and into the study, and my wife was in the study,” Mr Forster-Jones said.

“She ran out of the office.”Mr Forster-Jones said they had heard a

car coming down the road just before10.30pm, before the sickening sounds ofskidding and the bang of impact.

He said the front boundary wall of thehouse was extensively damaged and wouldhave to be knocked down.

“It was only when I got outside I knew ithad hit the house,” he said.

“Thankfully no one was injured; Ithought they were going to be injured butwhen we came outside, two people wererunning.”

Police allege the driver and a passengerran from the scene.

The alleged driver was later spoken to bypolice and charged with careless drivingand failing to report a crash.

Teen chargedafter car crashStolen XR6 abandoned

A STOLEN car with stolen plates was left aban-doned last week on Marmion Avenue, near theTrinity sign in Jindalee.

The driver of the black Ford XR6 appears tohave driven across a vacant block near Reflec-tion Boulevard and mounted a limestone wall, causing damage to both the wall and the car.

Yanchep police Sergeant Chris Wride said thecar was stolen and appeared to have been aban-doned, with the passenger side door left open.

“Investigations are under way and it will ei-ther be forensically tested on site or towed awayand tested off site so we can identify who was dri-ving it,” he said.

“The plates are stolen too and are not regis-tered to the car, which is not uncommon unfortu-nately these days.”

Sgt Wride reminded drivers that anti-theftscrews were a cheap way to prevent their li-cence plates from being stolen.

“They’re available from Bunnings for as cheapas $2,” he said.

“We’re planning to hold an open day at the po-lice station later this year to show people howeasy it can be to prevent this from happening tothem.”

Anyone with information should call police on131444.

Animal cruelty reports up: RSPCA

THE number of complaints to theRSPCA WA about abused or ne-glected animals in Perth haverisen this year, according to re-cent figures.

According to the RSPCA, com-plaints were on track to exceed2017 figures, with cruelty reports

in January and February beingthe highest since records began.

The RSPCA released a list ofcruelty hotspots last week, whichshowed Armadale was the suburbwith the highest number of re-ports in the 2017 calendar yearwith 102 reports, overtaking Bal-divis which ranked as the worstin 2016.

The list also revealed that Ar-madale and Midland were track-ing as the worst suburbs for 2018,with 29 cruelty reports each thisyear to date.

The City of Swan was revealedas the worst area for cruelty in2016 and 2017, with reports on therise.

The City of Wanneroo areawas ranked second highest with

501 reports, closely followed byCity of Rockingham with 440 re-ports.

RSPCA WA chief executiveDavid van Ooran said it was dis-turbing to see cruelty complaintson the rise but reiterated the needfor the community to stay vigi-lant.

“Compared to the first fourmonths of 2018, we’re trackinghigher than 2017,” he said.

“This is not good... we need toput a stop to animal cruelty andwe need more inspectors on the

roads. The most common crueltycomplaints received across thestate last year included ill treat-ment of animals, abandonment, insufficient food and water, anddogs in hot cars,” he said.

“While dogs in hot cars is gen-erally a summer complaint, it isquite alarming that enough com-plaints have been received that ithas shown up as the fourth high-est number of complaints acrossthe state for the whole year.”

SCHOOL friends Jonte Morgan, Maddy Clo-hessy and Scherri-Lee Biggs are uniting toraise money for a cause close to their hearts -brain cancer research.

The trio was in the same year at St Mary’sAnglican Girls’ School when Maddy met herfuture fiance, former Hale School student BenMcCracken, who was diagnosed with braincancer in 2012.

He died four years later. Now, the talented friends – a fashion de-

signer, lawyer and former Miss UniverseAustralia respectively – are working togetherto help brain surgeon Professor Charlie Teofind a cure for the disease that kills more chil-dren in Australia than any other disease, yetthe survival rate has increased just one percent over the past 30 years.

Jonte, who has a studio in Balcatta, is co-ordinating the ‘Fashion Moment’ whereseven Chadwick models will be dressed in herdesigns wearing headwear by Anita Carr.

The designer said there would be a goldtheme because the colour promoted “courage, passion and strength”.

Jonte’s mum Michelle Pike will be by herside creating live illustrations of guests onthe night.

Michelle, a former fashion designer, saideach illustration would take seven to 10 min-utes and subjects would walk away with anA5 print.

GRAVECONCERNSIN response to yourarticle regarding theproposed overpass atthe junction of Wan-neroo Road and Joon-dalup Drive (Week-ender, May 24), asignificant number ofresidents have graveconcerns relating tothis project in its cur-rent form.

While we are infavour of improve-ments, this project isflawed on so manylevels it will incurmore problems thanthe anticipated im-provement to futuretraffic flow: an in-crease of 80 secondsdelay by 2023 ifnothing is done.

The safety ofpedestrians andother road users isparamount.

In order to crossthis junction, pedes-trians will have tonavigate free-flow-ing traffic, cyclistsusing both the over-pass and the round-about underneathmay not be readilyseen and how is the“one metre rule”going to work?

Residents of theretirement villagewill no longer enjoyfreedom of move-ment as they do now.

What provisionshave been put inplace for those whoare partially sightedand/or rely on mobili-ty aids?

This concretemonstrosity will be agraffiti nightmareand traffic noise willresonate far andwide as there will beno natural foliage atthat height (10m) toabsorb any noise atall.

An underpasswould be better; itwill resolve most con-cerns, particularlysafety concerns.

All these concernsand more have beenraised with the Mem-ber for Wanneroo andthe Minister forTransport.

Local residentshave been promisedan opportunity to dis-cuss their concerns.MR AND MRS STILL-MAN, Carramar

Overpass angerA COMMUNITY coffee meeting or-ganised by Pearce MHR ChristianPorter in Carramar on Tuesday wasdominated by opposition to theplanned Joondalup Drive overpass atWanneroo Road.

While Mr Porter was open to speakon any subject, the audience of about35 wanted to discuss only that.

Mr Porter maintained that he wasnot in a position to change the StateGovernment’s decision to allocate $50million to the overpass. He did, how-ever, commit to trying to organise ameeting between Transport MinisterRita Saffioti, Wanneroo MLA SabineWinton and the disgruntled residents.

The rightsteps towardshome careTHE process of finding the righthome care can be confusing andcomplicated.

Home care providers such asBrightwater can guide youthrough each step of the processto make sure you get everythingyou need to stay in the comfortand security of your own homeand community.

Brightwater at Home managerJenni Gamble said it wascommon that people weren’taware of what assistance wasavailable, even when they knowthey need help.

“‘What is a home care package?’and ‘what home servicesare available?’ are commonquestions we hear,” she said.

“People don’t know how tointerpret the different informationor to make sense of all theacronyms.”

Funding is often the first thingto think about, and governmentagency My Aged Care canorganise phone or face-to-face

assessments to determine the

type of funding and package you

are eligible for.

Brightwater can explain the types

of questions you will be asked

during the assessment so you

can get the most out of your

funding.

They can also explain the

different options, including Home

and Community Care, which

covers personal care, shopping

and transport. Home Care

Packages are available for those

with more complex care and

medical needs.

Clients, for example, can have

furniture customised based

on an occupational therapist

assessment, sensor lights

installed, TV remote and

telephones modified, and garden

beds raised to allow for easier

gardening, to enable each person

to live as independently as

possible.

ADVERTORIAL

TESTIMONIALClients Tom and Dawn said

they would describe the care

and support they receive from

Brightwater at Home as brilliant

and they only wish more people

knew about the wide range of

services available.

When Tom had a stroke in 2014

which resulted in left-sided

hemiplegia, he was told he

would be in a nursing home for

the rest of his life and would not

walk again.

The couple were not satisfied

with the amount of therapy Tom

received at the nursing home,

so their GP recommended

Brightwater at Home, which

enabled Tom to return home

and for Dawn to receive support

in her role as his primary carer.

With the support of

Brightwater’s physiotherapist

and occupational therapist, Tom

has since made progress and

is now walking with assistance,

both inside and outside his

home.

Dawn’s support includes

help with cleaning and home

maintenance, which has freed

her up to spend more quality

time with Tom and their family.

Get back to yourbest at home, fast.

At Brightwater, we’re as passionateabout maintaining your independenceas you are. Whether it’s a helping handwhile you recover from an illness, orcomprehensive ongoing care to stayin the home you love, we can assistyou today. FANCY a glass of vermentino, petitverdot, fiano or nero d’Avola?

These are some of the lesserknown wines being made in theSwan Valley and the new winemak-er at RiverBank Estate, Digby Led-din, wants to persuade consumersto give them a try.

After 20 years at Lamonts, Digbyjoined RiverBank under new owner-ship of the Lembo family, inheriting11ha of vineyard with 13 varietiesof grapes.

While the Swan Valley is knownfor producing and successfully pro-moting its verdelho and cheninblanc, Digby is keen to encouragecustomers to try some of the lesswell-known wines that flourish inthe region.

To do that, RiverBank is partici-pating in food and wine festivals forthe very first time, making its debutwith City Wine at the Perth CulturalCentre on June 8 and 9.

“Most of our sales are going to bethrough cellar door so we need toget out and meet the public, retail-ers and wholesalers, anyone wecan,” Mr Leddin said.

RiverBank will be promoting newlabels and lines released in Septem-ber 2017: ‘On The Run’ and ‘Rebel-lious’. The names are based aroundthe now defunct Riverbank Deten-tion Centre next door to the wineryat 126 Hamersley Road, Caversham.

With the RiverBank cellar doorfocusing on alternative varieties,Rebellious aims to showcase wines

that are not quite mainstream likevermentino, fiano, nero d’Avola, and a new label may soon be in theworks to cater to export demandsfor mainstream varieties like semil-lon sauvignon, shiraz and cabernet.

The Run will be offering a newlybottled sweet rose, a chardonnaysemillon verdelho blend, a cabernetmerlot blend and a non-vintagebubbles blend, while Rebellious in-cludes a verdelho, a trophy-winningvermentino from Blackwood forBest WA Alternate White, and a top-selling rose blend made last yeardespite floods to 60 per cent of thevineyard.

City Wine will celebrate fiveyears of bringing leading WA bou-tique wineries to the heart of Perthwhen the two-day festival runs atthe Urban Orchard on June 8 and 9.

As well as wine, beverages from27 stalls will include craft beer, cider and spirits and a sparklingdrinks bar.

And for those who fancy a cock-tail there will be a Mojito Bar.

Tapas style food will be avail-able. Tickets: at https://www.wine-andfood.com.au/citywine.

New wines that will delight you

Give it a swirl: Senior winemaker Digby Leddin and RiverBank Estate owner Eric Lembo are hoping con-sumers will try their new wines.

SOPHISTICATED, sleek and modernare the first words that come to mindwhen you enter this home.

“The property is brand new and hasnever been lived in,” selling agent LukeHolmes said. “It was built as a one-offdisplay home; the owners built theproperty as a showcase for other pro-

jects they had going on.“I can honestly say this property is

head and shoulders above anythingelse in the area of a similar and moderndesign. It would suit a professional cou-ple who like to entertain and haveplans for a family.”

It combines a clever floorplan witheasy-care finishes on the 427sq m site, meaning this is also as low mainte-nance as it gets.

Moving through the home, whichhas multiple living spaces including anopen-plan main family/kitchen/diningarea, it is obvious no expense has beenspared in the home’s creation.

Expect natural light pouring in from

all angles, highlighting features suchas high ceilings, sparkling stone bench-

tops and beautifully tiled floors. The layout does well to complement

the top-quality finishes with four largecarpeted bedrooms all with built-inrobes, including the master with his-and-hers walk-in robes and ensuite, atheatre room, and tri-fold doors fromthe main living space that open out tothe alfresco entertaining area.

Extras include ducted reverse-cycleairconditioning and a security alarmsystem with video intercom entry.

“It’s a superb neighbourhood withmany other good-quality properties

that are well kept,” Mr Holmes said.

“The Perth property market is show-ing signs of a recovery in 2018 and buy-ers and tenants remain the beneficiariesof the current environment,” Ms Perisicsaid. “I feel we’ve reached the bottom ofthe market and I think we’ll see a lotmore properties starting to sell, the mar-ket will tighten and, towards the end ofthe year, prices might start to move up.

“So now would be a great time to takeadvantage of the current economic envi-ronment and lock in lower prices.”

Gas Safety AlertDo you have a Vulcan Heritage or a Pyrox Heritage gas heater?

People with Vulcan Heritage or Pyrox Heritage gas heaters in their homes needto get them checked by a qualified gasfitter immediately. Laboratory tests showthat under certain conditions the heaters produce too much carbon monoxide.Particularly if homes have poor ventilation and bathroom exhaust fans or kitchenrangehoods are used at the same time as the heater. This can result in carbonmonoxide poisoning.

What do I do?

If you have one of these heaters, do not use it until it can be tested by a qualifiedgasfitter. In the meantime please use alternative sources of heating. DO NOT bringoutdoor gas appliances inside such as a patio heater. This is dangerous and canalso lead to carbon monoxide poisoning.

The manufacturer Climate Technologies will arrange for a test by a qualified gasfitterand provide a rebate of $150 towards the cost of the test. If the heater needs to bedecommissioned, Climate Technologies will assist with the replacement cost.

Need to know more?

Phone Climate Technologies on (08) 9454 1056 for more information.

The Presets bring the party to Perth with their Hi Viz national tour.

THE wait is almost overfor fans of The Presets, with the release of theirmuch-anticipated fourthstudio album in June.

It has been six yearssince the Australian elec-tronic dance duo releasedPacifica, but band mem-ber Kim Moyes said thewait for Hi Viz was worthit.

“We finished thealbum around Christmastime last year, so we’vebeen sitting on it for sixmonths but also beforethat we’d been working onit for about four years,” hesaid.

“We feel really goodabout it. We took oursweet time making therecord so we knew it wasgoing to be as good as itcould be.”

Last year’s release ofthe single Do What YouWant featured in triple j’sHottest 100 and 14U+14MEis already among the sta-tion’s most played songsof 2018.

But with a Hi Viz re-lease date slated for May

18, the band announcedearlier this month therewould be another smalldelay as they put the fin-ishing touches on thevideo clip for the “Sundayarvo boogie-down” trackDowntown Shutdown, which features Sheppar-ton’s St Paul’s LutheranChurch Choir.

“We spent about fivemonths making thatvideo, which is the longestwe’ve ever spent making avideo,” Moyes said.

“It was just such a spe-cial song for both Jules(Julian Hamilton) and my-self and also for our man-agement and our label andwe just could tell we need-ed to get this one right.

“It was almost ready ontime but there were just a

couple of things we had todo at the last minute tojust kick it over the linefor it to be the best that itcould be, so that’s why weended up pushing back thedate for a couple of weeks.

“And we figured aswell, after a couple ofyears, two weeks wouldn’tmatter that much.”

Moyes said he was nowexcited for fans to listen tothe whole album, whichthey described as the“soundtrack to a partythat we would want to gonuts at”.

“Those tracks are al-ways the most fun for usto play live, so we thoughtwhy not have a wholealbum of them,” he said.

“I think the overall ef-fect is uplifting and real-ly energetic and it’s invig-orating. It’s certainly analbum to be celebratinglife with.”

The duo will bring theHi Viz party live to fanswith a national tour thatkicks off at MetropolisFremantle on June 13.

NOT even a 19-point deficitheading into the last term wasenough to stop the JoondalupWolves claiming their 10thstraight State BasketballLeague victory.

There appears to be no stop-ping the side as it heads into anaway clash against the 10th-placed Cockburn Cougars forits 11th-straight win tomorrownight.

It’s an ominous task for thehosts with Joondalup’s onlyloss of the season coming near-ly two months ago.

The Wolves’ winning streakappeared to be lost at the end ofthe third period at HBF Arenalast Saturday night when theywere 80-61 down againstcrosstown rivals the StirlingSenators in the Battle of Joon-dalup.

What’s more, Joondalupwas without its two best shoot-ers Trian Iliadis (work commit-ments) and Brian Sullivan(brother’s wedding).

But the hosts landed 36points to 12 in the final term tostorm home to a famous five-point win 97-92.

Import Jalen Billups led theway with 33 points, while guardBen Ironmonger put in a stand-out performance in the absenceof Iliadis and Sullivan with 12points, eight assists and five re-bounds.

The Lady Wolfpack camefrustratingly close to snap-ping its six-game losing streakbut fell by two points 56-54 to

the seventh-placed Senators.Kourtney Zadina led the

scoring with 13 points, whileEllyce Ironmonger took ninerebounds.

The Wolves’ seven-gamewinless run has them second-last on the table heading intothe clash against the ninth-placed Cougars.

Peter Tomsett hopes to make waves in the final event of the WA SUPtitles this weekend. Picture: Justin Majeks

GREENWOOD stand-up paddleboarder Peter Tomsett is one of thestrong chances to claim the top cate-gory at the final event of the WASUP titles this weekend.

The competitors will also be look-ing to book a place on the WA teamfor the national championships.

Surfing WA events managerJustin Majeks said recent form indi-cated Tomsett would be one to watch

in the blue ribbon Open men’s divi-sion as well as Gracetown brothersRick and Jake Jakovich and Spear-wood resident Crawford Only.

The competitors could face sometrying conditions.

“Despite a tricky forecast, welook forward to crowning our StateSUP champions along the Peel coast-line,” Majeks said. “The waterwaysand waves around Mandurah areideal for stand-up paddleboarding.”

Duncraig resident Chris Twomeywill hunt victory in the Over-50 divi-sion.

INSIDE THE FALCONSwwiitthh BBiillll MMoonnaagghhaann

PEEL’S form hasn’t been greatthis season but we know howdangerous they can be whenthey’ve got a lot of AFL experi-ence in the side.

They fielded multiple sea-soned Dockers players lastweek so we could face a similarscenario against them at Bendi-go Bank Stadium on Saturday.

Regardless of their ins andouts, we can expect them to con-

tinue the defensive approachthey’ve had to games this year.

Most of their performanceshave not been high scoring orfeatured a lot of inside 50s.They tend to compress a lot ofnumbers in the back half sowe’ll look to counteract thattactic.

The weather could also comeinto play with a rainy andbreezy day predicted for Satur-day. That will mean we’ll belooking to gain as much groundas we can by kicking the ballrather than moving it throughquick handpasses as we havebeen doing a lot this season.

We have been fielding a lotof running players so that styleof play has worked well for us.

We attempted to implement

it last year but it did not workfor us too well at times.

Our 13.15 (93) to 10.9 (69) winover East Perth at JoondalupArena on Monday wasimportant as it put us a gameclear of the Royals on the table.

It was an entertaining con-test and we more than held ourown in all aspects of the match.

I fielded a lot of questionsabout my 200th game as coachlast week and while I was veryproud of the achievement, I’mreally just a passenger to whatthe players do on the field.

I’ll no doubt reflect on itdown the track, but to be hon-est, it’s good to have the atten-tion on that milestone out ofthe way as we navigate themidway point of the season.
