Life is a Puzzle By Debbie Chalik

For over 25 years, we have traveled to Michigan City, Indiana for a family reunion. Each year, everyone comes. This year was no exception, which was a welcome and wonderful surprise. When I say everyone, that includes my grandsons (along with 18 adults and 2 semi-adults). Since my grandsons are the youngest (and busiest) of all of the family members. We needed something to occupy their little minds. I found a toddler puzzle on my Kindle and we “took turns” putting the pieces in the right place. My 3-year-old grandson became obsessed. Since his mom is not particularly a media-friendly mom, I don’t think this made her happy. But it did help with the busyness issue. I started to think about why my grandson loved puzzles. There are several reasons I considered, but the most appropriate was that puzzles fit his personality. He is a bit meticulous. As soon as he could walk, he made sure all the doors were shut properly. I see it as a positive life-skill. Puzzles are the perfect activity for him – and here is why. Consider this for a moment. Every puzzle piece has its own spot. You place the pieces where they fit, when you are done, the task is complete, and suddenly you hear a cheery little tune. I became obsessed myself. I like it when everything fits together. For a 3-year-old, life is simple. You don’t know about sadness and pain until you are a little older. At 3, you have never had a job loss or a romantic breakup. The only disappointment you face is when you don’t get your own way. For my grandson, his world is secure. He can sit with his Nana and do a puzzle without a care in the world. And so can Nana. The problem in life is that sometimes the puzzle pieces get out of place and it’s hard to determine where they belong. It happens to all of us from time to time. What do you do with those feelings that seem to stop you in your tracks? I find that I need some divine direction to put my puzzle back together. I have found that a little prayer has helped me center my life. Sometimes I can even hear a cheery little tune.

We are so grateful for the Eure Family!! Mary and Paul Eure and their children: Maria, Maggie, Molly, Andy and Veronica have generously given their time ushering and cleaning at Sacred Heart Church. Since Mass has resumed with parishioners, this ministry helps ensure the health and safety of all who come to worship with us.

And, it only takes about 10 extra minutes! The Eure family has already served as ushers at Mass and cleaners after Mass several times! They’ve shown us that cleaning after Mass is a wonderful way for the whole family to volunteer as Active Apostles at Sacred Heart! Thanks, Mary and Paul, for being great examples to your children and fellow parishioners! If you are interested in volunteering in the ushering or cleaning ministry, please contact Tonia in the parish office at (515) 225-6414 or office@sacredheartwdm.org. All cleaning supplies are provided including gloves and masks to keep you healthy, too! Service hours available!

La Familia de Mary y Paul Eure Estamos muy agradecidos por la familia de Mary y Paul Eure. La familia, completa con los hijos, Maria, Maggie, Molly, Andy, y Veronica, han estado dando de su tiempo generosamente. La familia Eure se ha apuntado a servir como acomodadores y limpiadores después de Misa desde que empezamos a ofrecer Misas en vivo. Este ministerio ayuda a asegurar un ambiente sano para todos los que vienen a celebrar Misa en la iglesia. ¡La familia nos ha enseñado que limpiar la iglesia en familia es fácil, solo toma 10 minutos! St. Vincent de Paul—August Update The St. Vincent de Paul Conference of Sacred Heart Church is still here for our fellow parishioners! For those that qualify and need assistance with food, clothing, rent and/or utility assistance, please contact the parish office. Our wonderful parish staff will contact us and we will start the qualification process.

Our annual Chip in For Charity Golf Tournament (9/17) has been canceled. Refunds are available by calling our District offices at 515-282-8327. The Raffle will still take place for cash prizes on 9/17/2020. You do not need to be present to win. We are still selling raffle tickets!

If you plan on making donations to our thrift stores and our clothing pantry, please contact the stores first due to space limitations. You may need to make an appointment. The 6th Ave Store is 515-282-8327 and the Army Post Store is 515-282-8328.

Thank you for your support of St. Vincent de Paul Sacred Heart Conference. We rely on our 5th Sunday Collection to serve those in need. The weekend of August 29th/30th is the next 5th Sunday. Family Violence Center Casseroles NEEDED!! The Family Violence Center casserole collection to help families in need is back on track! We need you to bring frozen casseroles after Masses on Saturday, August 1st and Sunday, August 2nd. The Center requests a protein in each casserole to be used as a main course for a family meal - beef, chicken, pork, tuna, etc. Our goal is 20 casseroles per month – we can do it!! For printed recipes ideas and guidelines, please visit the Sacred Heart website at: www.sacredheartwdm.org/family-violence-center-casseroles. This is a great project for service hours!
