UPDATE: This class has been moved to the Litchfield Education Center. As the ice sheets across North America melted following the last ice age, huge icebergs calved off into the sea, drifting in ocean currents across the North Atlantic. Many of these icebergs traveled east, staying in polar regions, but new evidence from seafloor iceberg scours suggests hundreds of massive (10-story) icebergs likely drifted south along the coast past Georgetown, S.C., with some traveling all the way to the Florida Keys before completely melting. These icebergs would have been carried south by huge outburst floods of melting ice water that were able overcome the northward flow of the Gulf Stream. Learn how new high-resolution maps of the seafloor combined with modeling of past ocean currents has helped us follow the surprising path of these icebergs and what that tells us about future melting of ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica. Jenna C. Hill, Ph.D., is an associate professor of marine science at CCU with a focus on coastal and marine geology. She earned her Ph.D. in earth sciences in 2007 from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, examining the influences of long-term sea level and climate change on continental margins. Since coming to CCU, she has worked on a range of projects examining past climate and ocean circulation, coastal morphology and seafloor habitats, and coastal geohazards, particularly tsunami-generating underwater landslides.

One reference for the class will be “WordPress: The Missing Manual,” by Matthew MacDonald. We will also explore the file manager to show you how to organize and manage your files and review software apps that can help you improve your computing experience. March 24 – SC Maritime Museum’s Annual “Burning of the Socks” – Goodbye, winter, hello spring! The SouthCarolina Maritime Museum invites you to usher in the coming of spring and the arrival of boating season at the fifthannual Burning of the Socks. The tradition began in the mid-1980s at a boatyard in Annapolis, Md. Captain BobTurner, who managed the boatyard, was forced by cold weather to wear socks with his Sperry Topsiders while heworked on OPBs (Other People’s Boats) during the long winter months. One year, on the first day of spring, CaptainBob ceremoniously removed his socks, placed them on a paint tray, doused them with lighter fluid and set themon fire. Then he drank a beer to celebrate! So the spring tradition of sock burning began, and there are now sockburnings in coastal communities across the country. Captain Bob Turner and his family now live in Pawleys Islandand are active members of our community. Bob has exhibited his sailboat at the Georgetown Wooden Boat Show, and he is a volunteer coach for the Winyah Bay Sailing Club, training young people to sail competitively. CaptainBob and his family will be special guests at this year’s sock burning. There will be hors d’oeuvres, seafood gumbo, landlubber gumbo, beer, wine, liquor and live music. Be sure to bring your winter socks to burn in the fire. Thecost is $20 with a 10 percent discount for museum and OLLI members, 6 to 8 p.m. For more information, call 843-325-1800.
