Weekly Message from Deacon Rob on the Sunday Readings
Today’s celebration centers around reception of the risen Lord and the acknowledgement of His truth. In a world where compliance with world goals is fostered and encouraged, people constantly strife to achieve success and meaning in their daily life by setting goals for physical achievements. Money, power and prestige are presented as the means to happiness when, in fact, they obscure what is truly important – God. Today’s liturgy calls all Christians to focus on their Risen Lord and to accept whatever they encounter in their life for the greater glory of God. This acceptance and focus will lead them to true happiness manifested in the fruition of the Kingdom.
The obstacles encountered by the formerly weak and timid apostles are portrayed in the first reading from the Acts of the Apostles. The formerly intimidated followers of Christ are brought before the Sanhedrin. The visitation of the Risen Christ has empowered and transformed them into adamant proclaimers of the Truth. Despite of having been warned by officials, the apostles fearlessly proclaim the Gospel and the Resurrection of the Lord. This Good News of the Resurrection and redemption of all cannot be silenced. Peter, who had previously denied the Lord three times, proclaims boldly that they must follow the Will of God. After being chastised and embarrassed through public arrest, the apostles leave, rejoicing in their sufferings. It is, now, after witnessing the Risen Christ that the fruits of the Holy Spirit have awaken the possibilities that await them through obedience to the Father. The ultimate triumph of the Messianic message is emblazoned within them.
This triumph is depicted in the second reading for today. John of Patmos’ vision related in the Book of Revelation unveils the final triumph of the Lord. John uncovers for the early Christians the glories that are to be theirs. An angelic scene is revealed where hosts of angels, creatures and people cry out and prostrate themselves to the Lamb who sacrificed himself for creation. This final and ultimate triumph is a testament to the love of the Divine for His Beloved. Faithful following of the Lord, John attests, await those who endure.
The Liturgy of the Word ends with a lengthy account of Jesus’ reappearance to his disciples at the Sea of Tiberius in the Gospel of John. This apparition begins with the disciples working diligently in their former profession,
fishing for their daily catch on the sea. At dawn, they see an individual on the shore who inquires if they have had any success. Not recognizing Jesus, they respond in the negative only to receive instructions as to where they should cast their nets. Following the directions of the stranger results in an overwhelming catch, causing the “Beloved” disciple to recognize Jesus. Returning to the shore, the disciples are invited to dine with the Lord where full recognition of who He is and what their duties will be is revealed.
John takes this opportunity to remind all, especially Peter, of what their role is to be. Questioning Peter three times, countering the three denials, Jesus asks Peter if he loves Him. The word “loves” is meant in a sacrificial way. Christ makes it known that Peter and the others must protect and tend the faithful who accept the Gospel. Their lives will be threaded with suffering and most will end in physical martyrdom, reflecting the same fate of their Lord. The Gospel clearly indicates that encountering the Lord means accepting the future God bestows with total assurance in His triumphal end. Christianity relies upon following the Will of God especially when it goes counter to the direction of the world.
Holy Mother the Church reminds us today that our triumph is embedded with the Lord’s. Christ, the Paschal Lamb, reveals Himself to each and every person through a variety of manifestations. He feeds his “sheep” in the Eucharist, uniting Himself in a most physical manner. Jesus extends His Mercy through Reconciliation where sin and death die to man. His life giving and eternal water is discovered in Baptism and the Divine Bridegroom is seen especially manifested in Matrimony and Holy Orders. God is not absent or indifferent to the universe He created; rather, He constantly reveals Himself and encounters all to those who seek. Life, the Church teaches, is filled with obstacles and pain brought about by our own sin; however, God triumphs in the end and is the final goal for humanity.

SAINTS OF THE MONTH:
ST. DAMIEN DE VEUSTER OF MOLOKA’I May 10
In the mid-nineteenth century, few people in Europe had any firsthand knowledge of leprosy. It was at this time that St. Damien volunteered to go to Hawaii, specifically the leper colony on the island of Moloka'i. Part of a team of four chaplains, he was the one who decided to stay permanently, caring for the people's physical, medical and spiritual needs. In time, he became their most effective advocate, adding new homes, a church, a school and an orphanage. Morale improved dramatically and in time, he succeeded in getting the Franciscan Sisters of
Syracuse to help in the colony. He contracted leprosy and died at the age of 49. When Hawaii became a State in 1959, it selected St. Damien as one of its two representatives in the hall of the U.S. Capitol.
I would like to thank you all
for your prayers for my recent
surgery. It went fine and I am
doing going for the time being.
Your prayers were very much
appreciated.
