NEWS BITESIranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Wednesday threatened that Iran would further breach the international accord that set limits on its nuclear program until it obtains the “desired results.”

Avigdor Liberman’s Yisrael Beytenu party on Wednesday said it would “present its own offer” to the country’s two largest rival parties if they fail to reach a power-sharing agreement by next week. “The last thing the country needs now is new elections,” the party said in a statement, adding that a third vote was unlikely to significantly alter the political landscape.

“We must reach a rational solution and leave all personal considerations and ego aside,” Liberman told party colleagues. “If by Yom Kippur [next Tuesday evening] there is no breakthrough, Yisrael Beytenu will present its own offer to the two factions [Likud and Blue and White].”

He noted that after the holy day, “the task of government-building will switch into high gear.”

THE KINGMAKER

The commander of Iran’s elite Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said on Monday that destroying Israel was now an “achievable goal.”

Four decades on from Iran’s Islamic revolution, “we have managed to obtain the capacity to destroy the impostor Zionist regime,” Major General Hossein Salami was quoted saying by the IRGC’s Sepah news site.

“This sinister regime must be wiped off the map and this is no longer … a dream [but] it is an achievable goal,” Salami said.

The remarks were made at a biannual meeting in Tehran for commanders of the IRGC amid rising tensions between Iran and the US and its allies.

IRANIAN THREAT

Russian President Vladimir Putin defends US President Donald Trump over accusations the US leader pressured Ukraine to dig up dirt on a rival, saying there was “nothing compromising” in transcripts of the call.

Russian President Vladimir Putin says there is “no evidence” that Iran carried out the missile and drone attacks on Saudi oil facilities last month, bucking the prevailing view among Western intelligence agencies.Speaking at an energy conference in Moscow, the Russian leaders says, “We condemn these (attacks) but we are against shifting the blame to Iran because there is no proof of that,” according to quotes carried by Reuters. He said Iranian President Hassan Rouhani had assured him Iran was not involved.

PUTIN SPEAKS

After a planned meeting between Blue and White leader Benny Gantz and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was canceled, sources in Blue and White informed Israel Hayom that the cancellation had been strategic and designed to weaken Netanyahu. One senior official in Blue and White said, "Netanyahu won't toy with us. Benny [Gantz] will be prime minister, and Netanyahu will climb down and resign. His time is over."

After the meeting was canceled, the Likud issued a statement saying it was "amazed at the decision by Blue and White to blow up the negotiations and cancel the meetings …. Blue and White decided to stop the negotiations for unity and hold an election, all because [No. 2 on the list] Yair Lapid is unwilling to agree to a rotating prime ministership between Netanyahu and Gantz.

Ultimate deal watch: U.S. Ambassador to Israel David Friedman said in an interview with The Jerusalem Post that the Trump administration will only release the peace plan once a new government is formed. “We want to roll it out in an environment where there is a government that can respond to it,” Friedman explained. “We would like to deal with a formed government, so they are in a position to react and respond and talk to us about it.”
