Farah Vanyani (FV): I have to ask, how did you get your nickname?Tapu Javeri (TJ): It was my father, actually. I was a very hyper child & used to ‘tapak’ everywhere. My mother tried to legitimise it by trying to make it ‘Tipu’ but no one would have it and it stuck on.
FV: I understand you’re a photographer but you have also designed T-shirts?TJ: Honestly, I just put my photographs on cloth. I would say I am a designer.
FV: So, where would you say your main focus lies? Jewellery or photography?TJ: It has to be divided between the two. I’m a jeweller and I’m a photographer. I can’t break the time between the two because I spend too much time on both.
FV: Do you have a favourite stone that you like to work with?TJ: Emerald. Always
FV: What about semi precious?

TJ: I love the fire of the Opal! It is really beautiful.
FV: Do you work with the Tiger Eye at all? Is there any particular stone you don’t like?TJ: - Yes, I do. I love the Tiger Eye. You would need to come across a beautiful one, and you would love it too. The only one I dislike is the Goldstone.
FV: Without all the gadgets, would you be able to tell the difference between say, the tanzanite and the sapphire? They can be very similar and Sotheby’s also uses instruments to tell the difference.TJ: Yes! The color should be able to tell you instantly. The tanzanite is a sweeter color, more purple and the sapphire is a stronger blue.
FV: Who would you love to design for? Dead or Alive?TJ: Edward and Mrs Simpson - she had a
beautiful jewellery collection!
FV: Do you get a lot of unexpected requests when it comes to creating unique pieces?TJ: Oh yeah. Some people come in with really bizarre requests but you have to work with it.
FV -Tell us a bit about your education background.TJ - I have an incomplete Masters in Archaeology from Greece.
FV: Why Greece?TJ: Why not Greece? Where else would they allow you to dig? Greece was very visual so I was taking a lot of photographs there & apart from that, it was a challenge. You had to learn Greek and study - part of it was in English. It was an interesting college (even though it was the American college in Athens) but what they would do is - our classes were held inside the Parthenon, so every morning, you had to go up to the Parthenon and you’d be told your next class

is in say, Delphi, be there by 9 O’clock, and there were no guides so you had to make your own way.
FV: That sounds like quite an adventure! What would you say is the most daring thing you have done?TJ: I think the most daring thing I’ve ever done is photograph models (laughs). Wildlife!
FV: Why not venture out of Pakistan? Although, it is nice to know that some of the big names have remained here.TJ: I’m inspired by this country and I really want to stay here. Everything and every corner is a photograph.
FV: Is there a certain time of day that you like to use, in terms of photography?TJ: Every photographer is in love with what we call the ‘Golden Hour’ which is right before sunset.
FV: Okay, now for the expected but important question - what is your pet peeve?TJ: I don’t really have a pet peeve as I’m a very moderate person, but I think intolerance. I also don’t like seeing people making fools of themselves....unless I have a camera in my hands!
FV: Your favourite scent?TJ: Burberry Weekend - which is the same cologne that I’ve been wearing since forever.
FV: Ideal gift - to give or receive?TJ: Art both ways! I go to Indus Valley and buy the students’ work which you get at very good prices and also tend to gift those.
FV: Who would you say your biggest influence is?TJ: My father in jewellery, definitely. In photography, Richard Avedon, who excelled in not only fashion but also street photography and Irving Penn, whose portraits left me most inspired.
FV: Tell us a bit about your family TJ:- I have four siblings- 3 sisters and a brother. I also have two aunts who are artists. The late Laila Shahzada and Mariam Saeedullah.
FV: Would you ever publish a book on the art of jewellery or teach a class?TJ: I would love to! Unfortunately, I didn’t archive as much as I should have.
FV: Are you more of a family oriented person or independent?TJ: I am insanely independent but I work in a family business. Independence doesn’t mean that you run away, you create your own space.
FV: And finally, any upcoming projects we should be on the lookout for?TJ: Several! I keep myself busy - there are a few books on the way.

Of coastlines and cannolisMohamed Malik
At eight years, wedged between a window and the rails of a Juliet balcony, I first felt Paris. Four of us covered in blankets tore pieces of perhaps the best bread we had ever tasted, waiting for the Eiffel Tower to illuminate at dusk. I remember thinking that I had never before felt so immersed in a thought or a place. Though I had already seen much of Paris earlier in the day, it was in that moment when the Parisian structure sparkled at the hour, that I felt the city.
If I was to give you one piece of advice on visiting the Cinque Terre in Italy, it would be this: do not at-tempt to see Cinque Terre, attempt to feel it.
Tagged as the ‘poor man’s Amalfi’, the Cinque Terre is a cluster of five island villages along the coast of the Italian Riviera. Bursting with colour, these villages are a scenic treat which also have the UNESCO folks crushing on them, and have designated Cinque Terre a World Heritage site. Owing to poor infra-structure, the only village that is accessible by car is Monterosso. For the remaining member villages you will have to rely on your feet and the trains that run between them.
We stayed at Monterosso, which is perhaps the liveliest of the five villages. With the charm of a rural life, it still has a number of restaurants and bars along the boardwalk. I would, of course, recommend making a stop at the pop up food markets peppered across the village to pick up some freshly made cannolis (these were the best I’ve had in Italy, and I can proudly claim that I’ve had my fair share of cannolis).
The most exciting part about the Cinque Terre is that it is part of a National Park. The villages are con-nected by snake-like hiking trails, some of which are really not for the faint-hearted. So for the more adventurous types, check with the tourist information offices about the difficulty of each trail before you set out. We took the Monterosso-Vernazza trail, and although the steep climbs were excruciatingly exhausting; views of the Riviera from atop the mountains are definitely worth the aching legs.
Go to all the villages for their rustic charm, but make sure you visit Corniglia, which was by far my favourite of the five. At Corniglia, you can climb up to the viewing spots to behold the beauty of the bucolic, haphazard town. Also not to miss is Osteria a Cantina de Mananan, a seafood restaurant tucked away at the top of a hill. If you do venture up, make sure you try their lemon sole; you will not regret this.
Cinque Terre will do away with everything that you know about holidays. There are no checklists, no art galleries or monuments that you must hit. The magic of Cinque Terre is in experiencing the stillness and romance of coastal Italy – and of course, a cannoli or twenty.

Thick eyebrows can be pretty hot but will probably draw the line at
monobrows or if they’re excessively bushy or unkempt. Emilia Clarke’s got
pretty bushy eyebrows and they work (let’s face it, you’re not going
to find many guys faulting Khaleesi) but let us just say Frida
Kahlo was pretty lucky she was good at art.

The first person to come to my mind is Sadaf Kanwal, she carries them off perfectly well. I think they look really different and sexy. The only drawback is that they only suit a few people. Also girls should not try to draw on a pair to follow trends, the only way

On 17 May 2014, there was a news report in the Guardian that read “Charity worker drowns on holiday in Jamaica while rescuing son.” That charity worker, Tony Wilkinson was the partner of acclaimed journalist at the Guardian, Decca Aitkenhead. The same Decca Aitkenhead has written a harrowing memoir, All At Sea two years on following the death of her partner. It was May 2014 when Decca, her partner Tony and their two young sons were holidaying at Treasure Beach
in Calabash Bay, her favourite and frequent holiday destination on the South coast of Jamaica. Decca had been visiting the place that was “more like home…than anywhere else on earth” for years but the first time with her young sons. One morning in the middle of yoga on the deck, she spotted a bobbing head out in the water and with mounting panic she realised it was a child, her child. Her four-year-old son Jake had been paddling in the water without a life-jacket when he had been sucked in
by Minahil Batool Sherazi
by the quickly changing undertow and pushed farther away from the shore. As she ran down the beach all the while thinking that her panic was a little embarrassing because she would reach Jake in time and there was no need for a melodramatic sprint down to the water, she saw Tony diving in and swimming to rescue Jake. With Jake finally safe on the shore, Decca looked back expecting to see Tony behind her but instead saw that he was further out than she had imagined. Tony had been caught in a riptide; pulled out to sea and drowned despite rescue efforts by friends. It’s an unforgettable first chapter of an extraordinary and poignant memoir, written beautifully and honestly about family, life and love and what remains after a tragedy. You are on the edge of your seat, breathless as the real life drama unfolds in the first chapter—Aitkenhead writes with a piercing accuracy about loss that stays with you long after you finish the book.“This is something that happens to other people,” declares Decca in the prologue, voicing a collective state of disbelief felt in bereavement. As an award-winning journalist she has spent her life writing about other people and their stories but suddenly finds her life the subject of news reports. Aitkenhead returns home to recover and to attempt

a new normal after Tony, and to do what she knows best—write. Through disbelief and stunned by grief she writes about Tony and her life because for her writing is remembering “If I never told it to a soul, and this book did not exist, it would not cease to be true. I don’t mind at all if you forget this. The important thing is that I don’t” she says because her children need to hear it and remember it till it becomes real for them. She writes that Tony dies a hero, but he did not always live as one and ensures that he is not portrayed as a saint. Tony wasn’t always a charity worker—he was a crack-addicted cocaine dealer who only went straight once Aitkenhead realised that it would be “unconscionably irresponsible” to have children till he was clean. From being a violent drug dealer to a mentor at a youth-at-risk programme called Kids Company, and earning a degree in psychology, Tony sounds like he has been plucked out of fiction. Their love story seems unreal at first even to Decca herself; Tony a mixed race child adopted by white parents in Leeds who becomes a Soho hustler at 15 and is sentenced to 14 years in prison for shooting a girlfriend’s pimps. He moves to California where he becomes a gangster, returns to England, settles down and has a daughter. By
contrast, Decca is white and hails from a middle-class family of ‘educated, intellectually radical’ people, raised with her three older brothers in rural England, where swearing was allowed, parents addressed by their names and family nudity was normal. Decca and Tony lived
on the same street and were married to other people when they met. Tony is charismatic, beautiful and unafraid to display his vulnerability. They fall in love instantly. Aitkenhead is bookended by tragedy; she lost her mum to cancer a week shy of her tenth birthday. But she evades her grief then
and ‘cauterises’ her senses, ‘deciding not to mind’ that she loses a parent. Soon after her mother’s funeral, adults around her hide their grief leading her to conclude that“If nobody was crying,
there was nothing to cry about.” But she is undone by Tony’s death and reasons with herself that“had Tony survived long enough to get to hospital, just 24 hours on a life-support machine would have bought me enough time to not mind very much when he died.” Tony’s death changes everything. Aitkenhead struggles to mother grieving sons, one of whom blames himself for his father’s death, and is astutely aware of her own grief, a parting gift from Tony. She encourages her sons to grieve in a healthier way; through crying and being honest about their feelings. I finished this book in one day, faster than I have any other book in a long time. All At Sea is a brave, honest, heartbreaking and at times overwhelming account of loss and grief that will leave you empathic and holding onto your loved ones that much tighter.
As an award-winning journalist she has spent her life writing about other people and their stories but
suddenly finds her life the subject of
news reports.

Aamna Aqeel’s collection titled ‘Stare’ showcased
black & white stripes paired with bright and
vibrant hues. The collection featured a variety of jackets, harem pants, jumpsuits and
dresses which were fresh and fashion forward.
We saw a lot of layering and fine cut work in
Nida Azwer’s collection, ‘Kirigami’. The entire range was an amalgamation of
experimental embroideries and contrasting opaque
fabrics. The collection was refreshingly original and
carefully crafted!

Zaheer Abbas highlighted the underrated art of minimalism with his
collection titled ‘Basic’. Re-imagining the all
white look, the designer showcased visually
engaging silhouettes which are perfect for the summer
season ahead.
‘A Dot That Went For A Walk’ was a collection
by Khadija Rahman that featured fringes, flowy
kurtas and closely pleated loose shalwars. We just
loved this collection!
Sanam Chaudhri presented a cohesive collection of modern cuts with
splashes of print. We loved the simplicity and the
experimental cuts.

W’s ROVING eye
Ethnic silhouettes and Afghani
chokers are all the rage (Thanks, Coachella!) But
we absolutely love how Alisha carries this look with such
individuality and grace.
Alisha Khattak
Shehrbano Taseer
We really want this Zara outfit
and it is not helping that Shehrbano looks like a
dream upon our wish!
Ayesha Noon
How is it that Ayesha Noon always makes super-casual look this chic?

W’s ROVING eye Well, what’s the use of a pair of good eyes that never rove? Weekend’s
been going through our fashion files for the week and these are the people who caught our fancy for either their style, their courage or their star power. Well played!
Zahra Khan
Nothing better than
the clean look of summer-
staples to beat the heat!
Wazish Malik
Take a cue from Wazish to transform
loungewear into a dreamy day
look!
Sadaf Zarrar
Sadaf Zarrar, working all the
classics just the right way.
