MERGING OF BEPMEDS WITH TOPMED MEDICAL SCHEMES

In our October 2009 communique we advised that "The medical schemes industry in South Africa isfacing a challenging and uncertain future." The Trustees of BEPMEDS wish to inform you of furtherdevelopments unfolding in the industry in general, and also within the BEPMEDS scheme in particular.

Government has announced its plans for a National Health Insurance (NHI) scheme, which aims toprovide all South Africans with access to quality health services that will be free at point of service.

Medical schemes have been under increasing pressure from the Council for Medical Schemes (CMS)to accumulate sufficient reserves to meet the benchmark requirement of 25%. BEPMEDS is nowcompleting its 8th year in business, having been established to meet the specific professional needs ofthe three founding professional associations - ASAQS, CESA and SAIA. Whilst BEPMEDS is financiallystable, with reserves of around 13.5%, as has happened with many similar sized schemes, the CMShas instructed BEPMEDS to merge with a suitable partner.
