A new exhibit, 50 Greatest Photographs of National Geographic, has opened on Aug 17 at the ArtScience Museum. This marks the Southeast Asia premiere for the exhibition, and its debut in this region coincides with the 125th anniversary of the recognition of the National Geographic Society.

The exhibition will showcase some of National Geographic’s most compelling photographs. From

Steve McCurry’s unforgettable Afghan girl to Michael Nichols’ iconic image of conservationist Jane Goodall with a

chimpanzee, to National Geographic magazine Editor-in-Chief Chris Johns’ shot of a South African lion, it includes some of the most-remembered and celebrated photographs from the magazine’s 125-year history.

Included in the exhibition is a photograph dating back to 1965 - Thomas J Abercrombie’s legendary image of Mecca’s main square in Saudi Arabia - and one which captures a new perspective on a

Seeking diScernment through fashion is a tough feat and standing out in the crowd – in a good way – can be almost impossible with major brands carrying the same type of clothes.

Local brand WSDM (pronounced as “Wisdom”) started with this idea in mind.

STarT of SomeThing new“WSDM also stands for We Seek DiscernMent,” says Abel Lim, who created the brand in 2011 with his wife, Riane Toh. They both have a design background and a good eye for trends.

Abel adds, “Singapore has limited menswear designers and they are usually either bespoke or office wear. We wanted to provide something different with street wear.”

WSDM draws inspiration from daily life and “signifies a start and beginning”.

He enthuses, “With every collection, we always want to put forth a positive image and optimism. We’ve realised a trend of brighter shades, textures and prints on Singaporean men and thus we incorporated that in our collections.”

UniqUe ColleCTionSTheir Spring/Summer 2013 range entitled More Than Life features large polka-dotted prints, candy-stripes and patches of colour on simple pieces such as cardigans, blazers, shirts and pants.

The pair is currently planning for their upcoming Autumn/Winter 2013 collection with “earth tones matched with bright colours”, out in mid-September.

WSDM has been worn by local celebrities such as Dai Yang Tian and on the set of Ah Boys to Men.

WSDM is located at Parco Next Next in Millenia Walk.

munah and hirzi remind us of the local version of Amanda and Marc from Ugly Betty.

Sharp-tongued, witty and incredibly funny, the duo has come a long way since they started MunahHirziOfficial on YouTube in 2008.

They have also starred in local productions on Suria channel and in Happily Ever Laughter, a stand-up comedy show.

This dynamic duo share with us more of their antics.

how did yoU BoTh deCide To geT inTo Comedy?mUnah: Since the day we met, we've always understood each other’s sense of humour, so I think that kind of chemistry really helps us always find the funny in situations. hirzi: We are natural pranksters even before 'comedy' became our 'thing'. school apart from my competitive desire to get good grades was that I knew I was going to get some hearty, gut-wrenching laughing sessions hanging out with Munah.

Laughing makes you feel good, healthy and youthful. And that's why, until today, people don't believe when we tell them we're in our mid-20s. They think we're 12... I usually go along with it.

how do yoU Come Up wiTh yoUr SkiTS and CharaCTerS?m: Our characters and skits are based on what's going on but just exaggerated with some humour. We always believe that you deal with a situation or an issue better when you start looking at it in a light-hearted manner. h: I always like to think of myself more of a character actor than anything else, especially because I can pick up accents and mannerisms very easily.

My character Corporal Hassan, for example, a cocky know-it-all and suave policeman, was inspired by three different actual officers I know during my National Service stint with the [Police] Force.

Sometimes when you're so into your character, you kinda get away with saying half the stuff Munah and Hirzi would never say on a normal basis... It's almost liberating. And the stuff that comes out of our characters is always priceless!

whaT iS in The pipeline for mUnah and hirzi?m: In terms of YouTube, we are working on certain things to expand and branch out into something new. We’re excited and I definitely see ourselves doing it for a long time.

any memoraBle momenTS when filming? BoTh: There are just so many! m: But I think the more memorable ones are the ones with people involved. We include a lot of public interaction in our videos and I love it when we meet our followers while filming.

We will make them join in our videos. It's like a motivation for us to keep doing what we do.

I also really like it when our lovely foreign workers take part in our videos. I mean, these people are so sporting and they really enjoy being part of the process. It's so easy to work with them and they just make our video all the more interesting. I love them!

yoU gUyS freqUenTly film yoUr SkiTS on The mrT. do CommUTerS reCogniSe yoU or Think yoU are jUST Crazy people in The Train?m: Haha! A bit of both I guess. When they recognise us, they say “Hi” and we ask them to join us in our antics. Best part is – they do! So that's a lot of fun. Others who don't know who the heck we are just think we're a bunch of nuts. h: Sometimes I would rather they not know me because, when the camera is not on us, we're actually very normal people.

Once, I was sleeping in the train looking really unattractive, only to go home to a tweeted picture of it. So, yeah, I would rather not be recognised in public. LOL!

if yoU CoUld play any TV or moVie CharaCTer, whiCh woUld iT Be?m: I don't have a particular character that I want to play, but I've always wanted to be an action hero! Like Lara Croft or the Black Widow, or GI Jane. h: Munah is clearly joking, because the girl cannot be sporty to save her life. Once, I made her run for a scene in our video and she looked like she was walking on coals. So unattractive, her run, OK! Haha!

But, if I could be on any TV show, I've always either wanted to be on Glee, Friends or Ugly Betty, as a villain. I desire to be hated!

Hirzi leaves this parting shot, “A lot of people are asking us where we have disappeared this year, but I tell them, relax man, Munah just graduated from NUS this July and I have my senior year to finish.”

He adds, “MunahHirziOfficial believes in education too, you know. Hahaha! And, if you miss us so much, subscribe lah! We got weekly videos, you know!”

Time To eaT my words. Jamie Cullum’s biggest fan, I am not. Friends raved that he was amazing when he performed in Singapore but I wasn’t convinced. Besides, he looks like a hobbit.

What an ignorant fool I was because after listening to his latest album, Momentum, I was dished a steaming hot serving of my own words that I sheepishly ate.

The STandouTSHis opening track, “The Same Things”, is a good example of the exuberance and energy that one can expect from him on stage.

He shows his cheeky side on the big band-inspired, horn-heavy throwback to the 1960s, “When I Get Famous”, and he’ll seduce you on “Pure Imagination”, where his piano-playing and voice truly shine.

Domicil Artist rugs

German contemporary furniture brand Domicil has recently launched a series of rugs in collaboration with Dutch artist Klaas Gubbels. The hand-tufted rugs are made from 100 per cent New Zealand wool and are the canvases for Gubbels’ iconic paintings of coffee pots – a recurring motif and quite nearly the exclusive subject of his works.

Klaas Gubbels was born in 1934 and is hailed as one of most popular visual artists in the Netherlands. Gubbels’ paintings and sculptures are displayed in museums such as the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag in The Hague and are sold by leading auction houses Christie’s and Sotheby’s.

Domicil is a premium furniture brand established in 1978 in Germany. In 2005, it was ranked among the top 20 German luxury brands. Domicil marries contemporary European design with fine craftsmanship in its collection of modern living and dining room furniture.

This collaboration is part of Domicil’s Contemporary Arts Series which aims to bridge cultures and celebrate differences through art, using furniture as a vehicle to bring art into people’s homes and everyday lives. In 2010 and 2011, Domicil collaborated with Chinese artists Xue Song and Pan Wei.

The showroom is located at 56 Tanglin Road, #02-01/02, Singapore 247964. Tel: 6735 0511. Opening hours are 11am-7pm, Mon to Fri, and 11am-8pm on weekends and public holidays.

Journey eAst revAmps showroom

Journey East recently launched its newly-revamped showroom at Tan Boon Liat Building. The launch also officially revealed new reclaimed teak wood collections from d-Bodhi, “Touch” and “Look”.

The Touch collection seeks to embody a woman’s feminine strength, and is distinguishable by a soft floral design that radiates a sense of peace and calm, combined with lean tapered legs that suggest graceful power.

The Look collection features a muted blue distress-finish stripped back to reveal the rich teak colour underneath. Combined with brushed iron legs and bases, the Look collection hearkens back to the rustic origins of the reclaimed wood, which are old buildings from where the teak is recycled.

The launch for the media and partners was followed by a two-day event over the weekend themed “I Choose to Enjoy the Beautiful Things in Life”. Pop-up stores at the event featured boutique fashion retailers Daughter and In Good Company, artisanal jewellery makers My Vintage Jewel Box, and handcrafted crochet toys from BFF In Good Company. The Providore and 6 Drunk Men ensured that there was plenty of gourmet cheese and beers for visitors.

As an island more than eight times the size of Singapore, Bali has many popular areas

serving tourists looking for beach holidays, except one: Ubud.

“Ubud” is a name derived from the Balinese word “ubad”, which means “medicine”. This is a reference to the medicinal herbs available naturally in this area.

Since the 1930s, Ubud has been an enclave for foreign artists. This was started by William Spies, a European painter whose residence and work in Bali inspired more western artists to help to develop Ubud into what it is today: the cultural centre of Bali.

In 2010, the story of Eat, Pray, Love (which was later turned into a commercially successful film) was set in Ubud. The story is about a woman who seeks balance through traditional spirituality, leading to romance. This story has inspired more people to seek something more than great beaches.

As one departs from the Southern shores of Bali and moves North towards Ubud, there is a noticeable change in the scenery. Touristy signs began to disappear as we passed more trade villages with their intricate sculptures for sale, temples which became progressively lavish and ornate and, finally, the terraced paddy fields which appeared artistically-crafted into the hillsides.

Roll down your windows and allow the cool and fresh air to embrace you. The weather can be a little unpredictable sometimes, so be prepared for showers of blessings at any time of the day.

We arrived at the Kayumanis Ubud Private Villa & Spa, which is nestled in a lush landscape of cinnamon trees and fragrant blooms, overlooking the forest and Ayung River.

Before entering our villa for the first time, the butler requested that we participate in a Balinese ritual. We were asked to remove our sandals. Then, with a ladle full of water from a Balinese water vessel, he rinsed our feet three times – a ritual to cleanse our body, mind and spirit, so we were told. The ritual and personal butler experience was a first for us.

in BaliIn thIs second part on BalI, eunIce Yap and Frank Young dIscover some new FIrsts In eatIng, plaYIng and lovIng It In uBud

EAT, PLAY, LOVEThe weather can be a little unpredictable but the comfort of the villa is sweet solace

As the flagship resort, the villas at the Kayumanis Ubud were impeccable. There was a large private pool surrounded by mature, lush landscaping, an open-concept living room area, a kitchen area where your personal chef caters to all your dining needs and a wonderfully-cosy bedroom with adjacent outdoor bathroom and shower – all in about 3,700 square feet of space – to help rejuvenate the senses.

EATApart from spending time basking in our very own private pool, we took the time to sample the local delights in Ubud, which we reckoned was more authentic than in downtown Bali.

As part of the package, the butler chauffeured us about, made recommendations and all the necessary reservations.

As another first, we went to try the signature crispy duck and duck with sambal hijau, a potent concoction of green chilli paste

and some secret ingredients, at the famed Bebek Begil Dirty Duck Diner. (I would recommend that you come during the off-peak hours to get a strategic table with a panoramic view of the adjacent paddy fields.)

The duck dishes are good on their own with their specialty sambal but you can couple it with gado-gado (a salad topped with peanut sauce and with prawn crackers at the side). Wash it down with fresh coconut juice, or go local with Bintang beer.

The other must-try, and another first for us, is Ibu Oka’s Warung Babi Guling (roasted pork). The “Pisah” at Rp 60,000 (with soup) and “Special” at Rp 40,000 are like our version of chap chye png (economical rice) with rice, vegetables, pork roll, meat and crispy skin.

If you are totally “meat-ed out”, try Warung Pulau Kelapa, an organic restaurant with a refined twist to Balinese cuisine – we feasted and ordered tempeh

penyet (fermented soya beans with special chilli sauce), sop buntut (oxtail soup with mixed vegetables), iga sapi penyet (similar to our version of beef rendang) and opur ayam (green curry chicken).

A sumptuous meal for two will not cost you more than S$20!

PLAYWe also decided to balance our generous intake with an early morning trek, guided by the resort’s butler.

Starting from Ibah, a quaint rural village, this is a relaxing and therapeutic 45-minute walk that allowed us to experience some of Ubud’s most scenic landscapes, traditional rice paddies, a quaint artisan village (specialising in egg-shell painting) and the alluring beauty of the Campuhan and Oos river valleys. This remarkable excursion ends at another delightful rural village, Bangkiang Sidem.

For those who need to do that little bit of shopping, go to the Ubud Market (a mere 10-minute walk from Ibu Oka’s Babi Guling) to get local fare such as batik shirts, tie-dye T-shirts, key chains, sarongs, cushion covers, paintings and souvenirs.

Go up to the second level and remember to

negotiate and be bold to ask for a 50 per cent discount!

LOVING ITOn the day before our departure, we succumbed to some pampering at the Kayumanis Spa. Located across the river with a bridge from the main resort complex, the five spa pavilions are tucked away in a secluded and picturesque valley landscape, together with a swimming pool and open-air pavilion for yoga and meditation.

This is truly sublime whilst you let your body, mind and spirit succumb to the natural healing.

If they say that Bali is the “Island of the Gods”, we would say that the Gods reside in Ubud – there is something magical about this place which inspires and rejuvenates visitors from all over the world.

Though we have been here many times, there are always more “firsts” to love about Ubud. W

TRAVELATION

MesMerising natural scenery, mild days and clear weather during autumn, delectable cuisine and much more make Korea truly attractive as a destination.

Breath-taking SceneryFrom a distance, Seongsan Ilchulbong in Jeju, also known as Sunrise Peak, looks like a giant crown. It rose from the sea in a volcanic eruption over 100,000 years ago. Many visitors love to hike up from Seongsan Village to its peak, a 40-minute trek, to catch its imposing sunrise. As you stand on the summit, the dawn envelopes you in shades of red and orange. It is simply unforgettable.

With its well-preserved tuft cone and diverse flora along a sea cliff, this volcano has pride of place as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Oedolgae Rock was used as a filming location in a 2003 drama serial, Daejangguem. It is easy to see why.

The rugged beauty of this 20m rock pillar, its lovely surrounding islands, and the tragic, romantic legend behind it all add to the mystery of this place.

Jagalchi Market & gwangJang MarketFor a slice of Korean life, visit Korea’s largest seafood market, Jagalchi Market, and see the indigenous natives’ lifestyles during the Jagalchi Cultural Tourism Festival held in October.

Intrepid travellers can polish off fresh raw fish there, and women selling mackerel, sea squirts and whale meat on wooden boxes mill around.

If textiles appeal to you more, visit Korea’s first covered market, Gwangjang Market, for silk, satin and linen sheets. Gwangjang

Experience Korea:

Korea is a true gem with beautiful nature spots, preserved traditions and cultural heritage sites, as well as good food

Market is also Seoul’s prime stop for street food lovers.

At its centre, tightly-packed stalls sell a range of Korean street food classics. Chomp on traditional Korean food such as mung bean pancakes.

Bibimbap is a rare find as you don’t usually see it sold on the street in Korea. The one here is made with barley and rice.

intriguing cultureVisit traditional wooden houses, or hanok, which go as far back as the Joseon Dynasty. Today, Namsangol Honok Village and some other villages operate as guesthouses, cultural centres and tea houses.

Andong Hahoe Village is the birthplace of renowned scholars of the Joseon Dynasty, located at the foot of Hwasan Mountain.

Its unique sights include the grand Nakdong River flowing around the village, the impressive Buyongdae Cliff, as well as scenic beaches, and lush pine trees.

Be sure to drop by the Bulguksa Temple, another UNESCO World Heritage site housing important relics and the Golden Seated Vairocana Buddhist Figure.

appetiSing cuiSineAfter all the sightseeing, feast on Hanjeongsik, a full-course Korean set meal with an extensive array of savoury side dishes, main dishes and hot pots. You will literally be eating like a king, as this cuisine originated from banquets served in royal palaces or from the homes of aristocrats.

You can also warm your tummy

with the nutritious Black Pork Hot Plate, with black-haired pigs in Seongeup Folk Village.

With so much to see and experience, sign up with SingExpress for their 7/8D6N Experience Korea – Autumn/Winter tour. Guides will take you to all these places which include Seoul, Jeju, Busan, Gyeongju, Daegu and Andong.
