Post Christmas backlash"The CD problem is a simple one," suggestsDon Oates, Vice President Sales andMarketing for CBS. "I can't get my hands onany."

With demand far exceeding the supply ofCD's in today's marketplace Oates explainsthat "We at CBS have never had an inventoryso we've never really been able to get a truepicture of the actual demand."

The biggest CD seller for CBS is BruceSpringsteen's Born In The USA."However," says Oates, "We haven't hadany Springsteen in for 3 months now, and ac-tually all of our Top 50 are on backorder." Arecent shipment of 30,000 units received ap-parently "won't even put a dent in it."

Oates continues with "Right now, themain source of complaint has come from ourown customers - it's just a filling of thepipeline, but the biggest problem is yet tocome."

With the holiday buying season now infull swing, and CD players selling in recordnumbers, Oates suggests that "TowardsFebruary and March - that's when there willbe a backlash from the consumers. Theywon't be able to find CD's for those new

Jones completes tourand lays plans for new LPElektra recording artist Howard Jones playedto a very respectable, however noisy 10,000fans at Toronto's Maple Leaf Gardens (Nov.13), one of the wind down dates for his year-long world tour. No stranger to Canada, hav-ing lived in Ottawa for a short period of time,Jones was given a warm label welcome by theWEA people, headed up by Garry Newman,Vice President Sales, WEA Music Canada.Newman and WEA Label Manager DaveTollington surprised Jones by presenting himwith platinum for his Dream Into Action LP.

This is Jones' second album for Elektra, the first being Humans Lib. There have been3 singles taken from ,the Dream LP: Life InOne Day, Things Can Only Get Better and,the most recent, Like To Get To Know YouWell.

Jones returns home to England andbegins work on his next album, expected tobe released early next year, after which he willkick off another year -long tour.

Howard Jones is presented with platinumaward for his Elektra LP, Dream Into Action.Making presentation are WEA's GarryNewman and Dave Tollington.

expected from CD buyersplayers they just bought or received as aChristmas present."

Responding to the question as towhether the opening of the new Canadianplant will alleviate the problem, Oates says,"Well, we have our orders in, but it'sdefinitely going to get worse before it getsbetter."

CAB's Gold Ribbonpresented to Q107The Canadian Association of Broadcasters(CAB) has presented Toronto's QI07 withthe Gold Ribbon Award for their "Develop-ment of Canadian Talent."

The CAB were apparently impressedwith Q's annual Homegrown contest whichfeatures local bands, the winners of which ap-pear on the station's Homegrown LP. Theaward refers to Q107 doing "the most todevelop and encourage local talent during thepast year."

With regard to the Homegrown contest,Q107's General Manager Gary Slaight notes"Some record companies have been recep-tive, some haven't. Honeymoon Suite wassigned to WEA after one of our showcases,"to which he adds "But the record companiesshouldn't care who finds the talent."

Interestingly enough, Bob Roper, WEAA&R Manager, says: "I didn't find thisyear's material, or the bands, strong enough. Also, recording contracts (for singles) wereoffered as prizes, and I'm not about to enterany bidding war with anyone."

Last year's winner, Eye Eye, were signedto the Duke Street label this past month. Thelabel's Peter Vitols says, "We should have analbum out early in the new year. We're hop-ing to get them into the studio very soon -we're just sorting out the producer."

We'll miss you Bud . . . !!Isn't it funny that age doesn't seem to berelative in the music business. Who wouldhave thought that Bud Farquarson had reach-ed the Big Five -O? The big shock, of course,is that Bud has decided to retire. He couldn'tbe leaving at a worse time. I've still got quitea few digs I wanted to use against him at thenext roast. Bud happens to be my favourite, and quite receptive, subject. Ask me aboutBud's T-shirt sometime. Anyway. . . it's theend of an era . . . but hopefully we'll have thechance to nail him before he gets used toretirement. An official announcement will bemade about Bud's retirement next week.

A conflict of meetings . . . ??While CRIA was having a closed -doormeeting on stickering "obscene" product, down the street, CIRPA was running a day ofseminars, to which I was invited "but notbefore 4:45." I have to admit, they were pro-mpt, and got their Video Seminar underwayat 4:49. An interesting feature of the CIRPAmeeting, had to do with what was going on atCRIA and they brought in Danny Goldbergto fill the "indies" in on his doing battle withthe wives of senators and fundamentalists.Danny likes to refer to his side as "The MusicMajority. municator and I hope his message has a lot ofclout . . . in America. We don't have a pro-blem here . . . yet . . . but if we work hardenough, we can create one.

Now something a little different!!That somebody, who mentioned recently theywanted to do something a little different, should look at doing something really well. That would be different. There really isn'tanything different when so many things aredone badly it looks good to do them well. When everyone tries to be different . . . theyare all being the same!!! (EC: You explainedthat very well!!)

A time for giving . . . !!While many of the major charities look aftermost of the needs of those less fortunate overthe Holiday Season, there are still those whoare passed by. Fortunately, Toronto has AChristopher Randall, a very kind and lovingindividual who really cares. Through his owncompany, Helping Others Incorporated(HOI), he will be making this Christmasseason a little easier for some of the "young"street people. A gift of a cassette could bringa lot of joy into the tough world of some ofthese kids. If you would like to donate a fewcassettes or album product to HOI, sendthem to Christopher at 20 Prince ArthurAvenue, Suite 9B, Toronto. M5R 1B1, or callhim at 416-960-9491.

Do your MIDEM shopping early!!It has been a very good year for air travel - ifyou shop early - that is. This year it will costyou under $700 to fly to Nice (Cannes) forMIDEM at the end of January - and you canlayover in London either way. For those ofyou in the music business, who want to leaveit until the end, it will cost $2224, which is theregular economy fare. Most will opt for thelatter. They just can't make a decision.

Showing a profit . . . !!!It was quite an impressive gathering where so-meone was overheard talking about a Canconcountry artist, and dropped the comment:"He spends more on advertising in RPMthan one of the major companies I canname," to which someone answered "and Iknow for a fact he makes more money." Ijust couldn't resist that one. That'sshowbiz!!!

Juno ratings amaze everyone .. . !!!We're told that the Juno ratings were so goodthis year that CARAS is taking bows - theCBC is taking bows - and everyone is gettingbachaches. Is this the same CBC, who oncesaid (of the Junos) "If we wanted an awardshow, we'd start our own and call it the CBCAwards"? On the other hand, in January of1970 we were told that no one in the industrywas interested in an award event for Canconartists. They claimed "It would neverwork!!!" (EC:Park your ego in your limo!!!)

If you don't know - don't guess!!In RPM's Album section last week, there wasa question asked regarding Aldo Nova's LP.The question was "No Cancon?" Well, didwe get calls. Unfortunately, this being a U.S.release, and Americans don't understandwhat the MAPL logo is all about - it wasn'tused. So . . . for those programmers, who

thought Aldo Nova was no longer Canadian .. . be assured . . . he is and the album, for themost part is 3 -parts Cancon!!!

Oneupmanship revisited!!!!Now that we have set aside all the industrynepotism, we are asked to "Sing -a -long -withJoe". It's such a well kept secret - we'll nevertell. Seeing is believing. I sang along with thepamphlet, but it didn't work. Anyone canprint up pamphlets. Are you pulling my leg??(EC: Read -along with Joe?)

The time may come . . . !!A certain manager and a few of his artistsmay choose not to attend the Junos in thefuture. I wonder who will be so vocal and ig-norant as to mention that he or they areobligated to show up at the Junos? (EC: justasking!!)

Yamaha has a CD auto system!!Larry Smith, National Supervisor, AudioDivision of Yamaha Canada, sends news . . .and pretty pictures . . . of Yamaha's new carCD audio system. He says a CD system forthe car "must satisfy 3 requirements: theplayer must be compact in size, it must beable to withstand the heat and vibration thatcar audio components are subject to, andsome provisions must be made for safe, con-venient handling of the discs themselves."Well, Yamaha has "met the challenges" saysLarry and their YCD-1000 will be on themarket in November and it carries a sug-gested list of $750.00

CHFI-FM on a high . . . !!Sandy Hoyt has the final tally forCHFI-FM's recent CN Tower party whichwas held in conjunction with QualityRecords. Billed as The World's HighestMotown Party, there was more than $1,600raised for the station's Promise Of Hopefund. This brings their total, raised since Oct.1st to well over $34,000. The money is beingdonated to the Canadian Children's Founda-tion who are building the Ontario Centre forthe Prevention of Child abuse in Toronto.

D.J.S. celebrates 10 big ones!!!That was a nice gesture on behalf of D.J.S.just recently. Mike Stetch and Margo Fraserof the Calgary -based record service company, presented RPM with a very effective plaque, which was made up specially for their 10years in the business. Congrats to D.J.S.

    guess!!

, there was lova's LP. Well, did

    ing a U.S. tnderstand

    - it wasn't

    ners, who

thought Aldo Nova was no longer Canadian .

    . . be assured

. . . he is and the album, for the

most part is 3 -parts Cancon!!! Oneupmanship revisited!!!!

Now that we have set aside all the industry nepotism, we are asked to "Sing -a -long -with

Joe". It's such a well kept secret - we'll never tell. Seeing is believing. I sang along with the

pamphlet, but it didn't work. Anyone can print up pamphlets. Are you pulling my leg?? (EC: Read -along with Joe?)

    The time may come . . .

!! A certain manager and a few of his artists

may choose not to attend the Junos in the future. I wonder who will be so vocal and ig- norant as to mention that he or they are

obligated to show up at the Junos? (EC: just asking!!)

Yamaha has a CD auto system!! Larry Smith, National Supervisor, Audio

Division of Yamaha Canada, sends news . . . and pretty pictures

    . . . of Yamaha's new car

CD audio system. He says a CD system for the car "must satisfy 3 requirements: the

player must be compact in size, it must be able to withstand the heat and vibration that car audio components are subject to, and

some provisions must be made for safe, con- venient handling of the discs themselves."

Well, Yamaha has "met the challenges" says Larry and their YCD-1000 will be on the

market in November and it carries a sug- gested list of $750.00

CHFI-FM on a high . . . !! Sandy Hoyt has the final tally for

CHFI-FM's recent CN Tower party which was held in conjunction with Quality

Records. Billed as The World's Highest Motown Party, there was more than $1,600

raised for the station's Promise Of Hope fund. This brings their total, raised since Oct.

1st to well over $34,000. The money is being donated to the Canadian Children's Founda-

tion who are building the Ontario Centre for the Prevention of Child abuse in Toronto.

D.J.S. celebrates 10 big ones!!! That was a nice gesture on behalf of D.J.S. just recently. Mike Stetch and Margo Fraser

of the Calgary -based record service company, presented RPM with a very effective plaque,

which was made up specially for their 10 years in the business. Congrats to D.J.S.

Toronto's Stowe Shelterto benefit from concertsToronto and area musicians, for the 3rd year, are supporting the Emily Stowe Shelter ForWomen. There have been 4 concerts schedul-ed at The Holiday, a downtown club. It'shoped the benefit will raise necessary fundsfor the shelter which provides services forassaulted women and their children.

Bands scheduled to appear include:L'Etranger, Curtis Dridger, Word Of MouthBand (Dec. 4); Bratty, Present Tense, AnnaGutmanis, Maja Bannerman, Taylor Green(5); Rude Awakening, High Noon, Direktive17 (6); and Rheostatics, Kinetic Ideals, Tulpa(7).

Tickets are available at the door for$5.00 per night or $10. for a 3 -night pass.

Kate Bush continued from page 1

Helicopter on Pink Floyd's The Wall. Whenasked whether this material would be moredifficult to reproduce on stage, Bush'responded with "There are definitelyelements to this album that will make it verydifficult but in some ways I think that if thesongs aren't structured around a normalband format, it does make it that much moredifficult anyway."

Bush, who produced the album, says"The biggest critic I have is myself. There aresituations where I'm the only one who reallyisn't happy with it, and it is at that momentwhere I can work harder to see if I can get itbetter. I do enjoy my freedom and being ableto express what I want."

The album is divided into 2 parts:Hounds Of Love and the conceptual TheNinth Wave. With respect to this concept sideand Bush's apprehensions about it, she says,"I didn't know if it was going to work, without having written all the songs to it but Ithought it was an interesting idea to do a con-cept side. It was very challenging and a lot offun because you're working within the at-mosphere of one thing and you get a greatersense of the mood."

Bush has also put a lot of effort into themaking of her videos, this being her visual in-terpretation of the songs. "The last video wedid (Cloudbusting) is very interesting. It's ex-ploring an area that I've wanted to for a longtime and that's where the real power lays withvideos: visuals combined with music, telling astory.

"If the story is great and the music reallylends itself to visualization then that is wherevideo works as an artform very well. Singleshowever, are not always tracks that easilyconvert to visuals so sometimes you are com-promising - putting nice images together withmusic. Although that can work as well, it'snot really taking the artform to its fullest."

In discussing influences evoking style,Bush explains, "The biggest influence on mewas the traditional English and Irish folkmusic. It was always around me when I was achild, but particularly Irish music - it has themost incredible emotion - yes, it's so emotive. It can be happy and yet it can be so terriblysad."In concluding, Bush reveals. "I still find itsurprising and wonderful to fmd my name inlights or on the charts."

Toronto's Stowe Shelter RECORDS TO RADIO to benefit from concerts Rappin to you, 'Bout the Big Q

Toronto and area musicians, for the 3rd year, are supporting the Emily Stowe Shelter For

Women. There have been 4 concerts schedul- ed at The Holiday, a downtown club. It's

hoped the benefit will raise necessary funds for the shelter which provides services for

assaulted women and their children. Bands scheduled to appear include:

L'Etranger, Curtis Dridger, Word Of Mouth Band (Dec. 4); Bratty, Present Tense, Anna

Gutmanis, Maja Bannerman, Taylor Green (5); Rude Awakening, High Noon, Direktive

17 (6); and Rheostatics, Kinetic Ideals, Tulpa (7).

Tickets are available at the door for $5.00 per night or $10. for a 3 -night pass.

Kate Bush continued from page 1

Helicopter on Pink Floyd's The Wall. When asked whether this material would be more

difficult to reproduce on stage, Bush' responded with "There are definitely

elements to this album that will make it very difficult but in some ways I think that if the

songs aren't structured around a normal band format, it does make it that much more

difficult anyway." Bush, who produced the album, says

"The biggest critic I have is myself. There are situations where I'm the only one who really

isn't happy with it, and it is at that moment where I can work harder to see if I can get it better. I do enjoy my freedom and being able

to express what I want." The album is divided into 2 parts: Hounds Of Love and the conceptual The

Ninth Wave. With respect to this concept side and Bush's apprehensions about it, she says,

"I didn't know if it was going to work, without having written all the songs to it but I thought it was an interesting idea to do a con-

cept side. It was very challenging and a lot of fun because you're working within the at-

mosphere of one thing and you get a greater sense of the mood."

Bush has also put a lot of effort into the making of her videos, this being her visual in-

terpretation of the songs. "The last video we did (Cloudbusting) is very interesting. It's ex-

ploring an area that I've wanted to for a long time and that's where the real power lays with

videos: visuals combined with music, telling a story.

"If the story is great and the music really lends itself to visualization then that is where video works as an artform very well. Singles

however, are not always tracks that easily convert to visuals so sometimes you are com-

    promising -

putting nice images together with music. Although that can work as well, it's

not really taking the artform to its fullest." In discussing influences evoking style,

Bush explains, "The biggest influence on me was the traditional English and Irish folk

music. It was always around me when I was a child, but particularly Irish music - it has the most incredible emotion - yes, it's so emotive.

It can be happy and yet it can be so terribly sad."

In concluding, Bush reveals. "I still find it surprising and wonderful to find my name in

    lights or on the charts."

    by Cameron Carpenter Label Manager

    Quality Records

Now my name's Cam, and I'd like to rap. There's been some rumours, but they're all

crap. We've got great labels, and there's no tricks. We're

pushing hard into '86. I'm goin' to

start off with a man called Lionel. The

single's out, the album close to final.

    We hope to release come m i d -

December. Can't Slow Down sold a

million and a half. Cam Carpenter And if you don't have product the consumers laugh. They walk on down to the very next store, and buy their Lionel and even more. Like the 12-yr.

old genius, who's now thirty-five. The new single's Go Home and the album's alive.

And another great record we're puttin' in motion is the brand new single from the

great Billy Ocean. It's the soundtrack to The Jewel Of The Nile. And it's the best new

record we've heard in a while. It's called When The Going Gets Tough, The Tough

Get Going. The record's being added, and the sales are flowing.

You should Have A Good Look at this new band we've got. They're called Perfect

World and certainly are hot. A video of their's just won a major prize. An award of

25 grand and these aren't lies. Also Cancon - so no need to worry.

Is the '86 release of Johnny Dee Fury. We've got this new album that's too wild to tame. So don't forget to remember that name.

And another band that's doing quite well is FM, and they have a story to tell - 'bout

their next single, All Of The Dreams, which will take Con -Test to gold or so it seems.

And we have a rapper, who's doing very nice. He's Melle Mel and the record's called Vice.

And another record we're ready to chalk. Is a dance tune by Alisha we call Baby Talk.

You shouldn't forget our catalogue is large. With solid gold by bands like DeBarge.

And for those of you who like to rock. Come back in January for a taste of the Flock.

We've got Mary Janes and The Temps too. So call your promo rep to see what they can do.

And to those of you who think this is faulty. Remember, we're pushin' hard and we're pushin' Quality.

    True North readies Cockburn's follow-up

True North are currently putting the finishing touches on Bruce Cockburn's new album, as

yet untitled. The LP will be released in mid - January of next year, and is the follow-up to Stealing Fire, which has now exceeded sales

of 500,000 units worldwide. Jon Goldsmith and Kerry Crawford,

who co -produced Stealing Fire, are also pro- ducing this set which features a new band: Fergus Marsh (bass), Chi Sharpe (percussion) Hugh Marsh (violin), Michael Slosky

(drums), Michael White (trumpet), and Judy Cade on background vocals.

Cockburn begins rehearsals for his world tour, which will be launched with Canadian dates in February. He will be accompanied by

    his new band.
