feature

There’s nothing sexier than someone who oozes confi dence in their walk, talk and the way they approach life. And one way to dial the confi dence up a notch (or help you fake it ‘til you make it) is to look good and know it. So this week we’re touching on the basics of the best makeup for your face shape. We’ve also thrown in some face-contouring tips for good measure because it’s all about highlighting your best features and fl aunting what you’ve got.

A Round faceThe fullness of a round face gives an enviable youthful look. The distance from the forehead to the chin tends to be short, and is wider from cheek to cheek. A round face has full cheeks and a roundish chin.● Basic contouring: Use a highlight tone

(light) on the forehead, under the eyes, on the top of the cheeks and the centre of your chin. Then use a slightly darker shade for the temple, cheeks and jaw

line. Blend carefully to avoid visible lines. This kind of contouring will give the illusion of stronger features and angles.

● Lips: Wear a bright or sassy colour to make your face seem bolder.

● Cheeks: Blush will give your cheeks some defi nition. Use a shade that suits your skin tone in a neutral or pink/peach.

AN Oval face An oval face is symmetrical, with cheeks broader than the chin and forehead. Lucky you can try most makeup trends and don’t need to use contouring, which means more time to drink coffee while staring wistfully out a window (or whatever) in the morning.● Mouth: Use a soft colour like rose on the

upper lip, and a bold shade like cherry on the bottom lip. This will focus more boldness to the bottom part of the face to create a more even look. If lip liner is your thing, apply a little more on the

bottom than on the top (without doing a full Kylie Jenner…).

● Cheeks: Even though you have high cheekbones, don’t go to town with the blush. Keep it natural and apply a light amount of a soft pink or a bronzer. If your cheeks are already naturally rosy, give blush a miss altogether.

● Eyes: Use pastel colours or lighter shades to highlight your eyes, and apply mascara to make your lashes appear thicker and longer.

A Square faceA square face has the same width from the edges of the forehead, across the cheeks, and from jaw to jaw.● Basic contouring: To soften your face,

highlight the centre of your forehead, under your eyes, and the very tip of your chin. Use a slightly darker colour around the hairline and the strongest parts of your jaw.

● Mouth: Because your jaw will appear larger than your forehead, avoid dark or bold shades. Instead use light colours

to add a softer focus to the lower part of your face.

● Cheeks: Apply a soft-coloured blush on the apples of your cheeks using circular motions with a medium brush.

● Eyes: This is where you can go bold to draw attention to the upper half of your face. Use either neutrals or colours and don’t be afraid of eyeliner and mascara. Make those eyes pop!

A Heart-shapeD faceA heart-shaped face is wide at the forehead but then curves down to a point at the chin. ● Basic contouring: To soften the lower

half of your face, highlight your chin, forehead and under your eyes. Use a darker colour or bronzer for your temples and cheeks.

Follow the makeup tips for an oval face for your mouth, cheeks and eyes.

A LONG FACEThis face shape is characterised by high cheek bones, a raised forehead and a distinct jaw line. To shorten the appearance of your face, use a little bronzer on your chin. You can also apply extra blush on the apples of your cheeks to make the most of your cheekbones.

Follow the tips for a square face shape for your mouth, cheeks and eyes.

PROFILE

Tiffany JeffreyAfter the birth of her third child and the loss of her dad, Tiffany decided the time was right to turn her life and her health around. After I gave birth to my third child, Evie, I saw photos of myself holding her and realised how much weight I’d gained. Everyone said it was just ‘baby weight’ but I knew it wasn’t. I hopped on the scales at home and I weighed 79.4kg. I didn’t want to get to 80kg, so that was my turning point.

It was a tough time because when my baby was four weeks old, my father passed away. But I used his passing as motivation because my dad was a very positive man and I knew he would want more for me in life. I just took that on board and ran with it.

I like that the Program isn’t restrictive. You can still go for dinner with friends and it offers a healthy, balanced approach – it’s not ‘one size fi ts all’. I’m very careful about portion sizes and I eat a wide variety of foods. Before joining Weight Watchers, I didn’t pay attention to the different food groups. I was eating way too many chocolate bars and biscuits, and dinner always included too much pasta or rice. Now I snack on fruit and I’ve started eating lots of salads, too.

Once a fortnight I sit down and make two lists. On the fi rst list, I write down 14 meals, and then the second is my grocery list. I mark all the recipes I want to make in my Weight Watchers cookbooks with sticky notes. If I don’t plan like that, it all falls apart!

We like tortilla pie, spaghetti bolognese, and the Garlic chicken with mixed mushroom sauce from the Weight Watchers Family

it a ‘diet’ because it’s not – I tell them we’re learning how to eat healthily.

I exercise three to four times a week now, which was something I wasn’t concerned about at all before. I’m a member of a gym, too, and usually manage to do a group fi tness class while my children, Molly, 6, Xavier, 4, and Evie, now 2, go to the crèche.

I have so much energy now and I feel much happier in my relationship with my husband and my kids. I’ve realised it really is true that if you take good care of yourself, it shines out to everyone around you.
