Airbus faces Farnborough ‘acid test’ for A350 ordersIBA: ‘Positive message’ at airshow could offset Emirates cancellation

Next month’s Farnborough Air-show could be the ‘acid test’ as to whether Airbus can clock up a string of orders that will offset the disappointment of Emirates Airlines’ cancellation of a 2007 order for 70 Airbus A350 aircraft, according to IBA, the UK-based aviation consultancy.

The cancellation reduces total or-ders for the all-new A350 wide-body by 9%, leaving it with a still-respectable 742 orders from 38 customers. Bombar-dier expects certification from the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to be received shortly. “With Transport Canada certification of the Challenger 350 aircraft program in-hand, another significant milestone has been achieved,” said Stéphane Leblanc, vice-presi-dent and general manager, Challenger Pro-grams, Bombardier Business Aircraft.

FLY Leasing sells four older aircraft

FLY Leasing, a global lessor of modern com-mercial jet aircraft, has sold four aircraft from its portfolio. The four aircraft have an aver-age age of 14 years and the sales will further reduce the age of FLY’s fleet. The sales gener-ated a gain over FLY’s net book value. FLY has now sold five aircraft in the second quarter.

Microturbo (Safran) e-APU60 is certi-fied by FAA

Microturbo (Safran) reported that its new e-APU60 power system is certified by the American FAA (Federal Aviation Administra-tion). The e-APU60 has been specially de-signed to meet the demands of new-genera-tion more-electric aircraft. It is characterized by an excellent power-to-weight ratio and exceptional compactness. Tests performed last year on the new-generation AgustaWe-stland AW189 helicopter validated its excel-lent reliability and its endurance in extreme operating conditions, as well as its impressive performance in normal flight conditions. On May 31st of last year, the e-APU60 received the highest level of EASA (European Aviation Safety Agency) civil certification (category 1 for essential use). In addition to ground start-ing the main engines, supplying power to the electrical systems and providing air con-ditioning for the AgustaWestland AW189, the e-APU60 is also capable of restarting the engines in flight and providing an additional source of power required to cover all elec-trical needs throughout the flight envelope. Flight safety is therefore optimized.

EASA certifies ATR’s new Pratt & Whitney Canada 127N engines

The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) certified the ATR 72-600 aircraft for the use of new PW127N engines. Following in the PW127M’s flight path with over 10m hours of operation, the PW127N provides a 4.5% power increase for Maximum Take-Off ratings (MTO), thus enhancing perform-ance in hot and high operating conditions. The PW127N will be rolled out progressive-ly to Avianca’s ATR fleet throughout 2014 and 2015. The first ATR 72-600 of Avianca equipped with the new PW127N engines will be delivered in the coming weeks, and will enable the airline to get better performance at take-off on airports in al-titude like their hub in Bogota, Colombia.

Field conversions from the PW127M to the PW127N will be feasible with minor hard-ware modifications. The new PW127N en-gines recently obtained a first certification from Transport Canada (TC), the Canadian Airworthiness Authority and now the EASA certification as well.

Shares in both Airbus and Rolls-Royce, which supplies the Trent XWB engines for the A350, fell in early trading on the day of Emirates’ announcement, but Rolls-Royce said it expected demand for the engine to remain strong. The engine maker’s original sale to Emirates was part of a wider $8.4bn deal, signed in Novem-ber 2007, for engines to power 120 aircraft, all with its Total-Care aftermarket services.

It is thought that Emirates will instead push Airbus to upgrade the A380 superjumbo with a more efficient engine. At last year’s Dubai Airshow in No-vember, the carrier increased its total orders for the A380 by a further 50 jets to 140. It is also thought to be firming up a commitment for 150 Boe-ing 777X ‘mini-jumbo’, which could be confirmed at Farnborough.

Emirates is understood to be concerned about restricted capacity at Dubai airport, and is looking to grow its fleet of larger planes, including the A380, which holds some 500 passengers, and the Boeing 777-9x, which will be configured to seat more than 400. The A350-900 has a capacity of 314, while the larger A350-1000 will hold up to 350.

The technical capabili-ties and production capacity of the Xiamen facility will dovetail with the HAECO Group’s component workshops in Hong Kong and in conjunction with the Group’s subsidi-ary and associate facilities covering wheels and brakes, tyres, aero- structures, landing gear, APUs, and other Line Replacement Units, will greatly enhance component sup-port provided to the Group’s airframe and line maintenance customers around the Asia Pacific region. The new company has put in place streamlined customs declaration and clearance procedures, enhanced round-the-clock logistics processes, and repair process optimisation to drive improvement in cycle times, component reliability, and supply chain costs. This will in turn enhance repair support for the Group’s inventory technical management company, HAECO ITM.

B/E Aerospace’s Board of Directors com-menced a process to separate its leading busi-nesses into two independent, publicly traded companies — one focused on aircraft cabin interior equipment – design, development, manufacturing, certification and direct sales on a global basis (“Manufacturing Co.”), and the other focused on distribution, logistics and technical services for the aerospace and energy services markets (“Services Co.”). The Company said that the separation announce-ment represents an important step in its on-going strategic review process, noting that the Company’s Board and management are continuing to review and aggressively pursue its strategic alternatives to enhance value to shareholders. Each of the new companies will be a global leader in its respective market. B/E

Aeroflot released that Dobrolet, its wholly owned low-cost carrier subsidiary, has com-pleted its first commercial flight from Moscow to Simferopol. Aeroflot launched a low-cost carrier project to achieve its strategic goal of increasing the availability of air travel for Russian citizens and to further develop air travel as the most efficient form of passenger transport in Russia. The low-cost model is based on main-taining tight control of costs, particularly on some elements of service. As a result, Dobrolet’s transportation costs are 20%-30% lower than classical established car-riers, and may be further reduced in future. In August, Dobrolet will launch flights to St Petersburg and Samara. The route network will subsequently expand to other Russian regions, and from 2016 Dobrolet plans to fly to international destinations, primarily in Europe and the CIS. The new airline’s fleet will consist of new Boeing 737-800NGs in one-class configuration designed to carry 189 passengers. By the end of 2014 Dobrolet will operate eight aircraft. Dobrolet plans to increase its fleet to 40 aircraft by 2018, operating 45 routes and carrying more than 10 million passengers.

has positioned both businesses to be success-ful, profitable and sustainable independent companies, and this decision reflects a further evolution of the Company’s strategies em-phasizing the development of the Company’s businesses, addressing their distinct needs and thereby increasing their value to shareholders.

This is the fourth certification Gogo has received specific for JAL’s connectivity service and marks the last one needed to install JAL’s com-plete domestic fleet. Gogo has partnered with JAL to install connectivity service and Gogo Vision – Gogo’s wireless in-flight entertainment service – on JAL’s domestic fleet and the certification is a key milestone in the installation process.
