THIS WEEKEND

SABBATH SERVICE AND DINNER FOR COLLINGTON’S JEWISH COMMUNITY: FRIDAY, OCTOBER 30 – 5:30PM: The Sabbath service and dinner will start promptly at 5:30PM. Sign up by calling the dining room (Ext. 2135) no later than Wednesday Oct. 28 at 6PM. We will post at the podium where the dinner will be held (which will depend on how many are attending). WEEKEND WEED WARRIORS: SATRUDAY, OCTOBER 31 – 9:30AM, TENNIS COURTS: On the 24th, four stalwarts -- notably including Anne Brown and Peter Pfund -- continued chopping and clearing our way through the copse of trees between the 4200's and the 5100's. We are fast approaching the end of our useful activity there until a month or so further on, when the leaves are off the trees, but not off the bittersweet. A potentially melancholy note: Construction activity in the 4000 cluster, presumably to improve drainage, though that is not yet definite, has led to the dumping of large quantities of sod to within the very copse on which we have been working. It is, I suppose, an open question for both Grounds Committee and Buildings Committee about whether this is the least unsatisfactory way to dispose of unwanted or disused topsoil and sod. On the positive side, anyone wanting the sod can go get it -- western edge of that copse. This week, we will start on the copse opposite the entrance to the 3000's cluster. Finally, can there be any truth to the rumor that weed

SHAKESPEARE THEATER, “SALOME”: TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 3; Departing Collington at 6:15PM. Returning to Collingty by 10PM. Show starts at 7:30PM, Duration: 1 ½ hours. The story has been told before, but never like this. A fortress called Machaerus, sandy cliffs perched high above the Sea of Death. A holy man from the wilderness, demanding freedom for his people, locked deep beneath the ground. A nameless woman, written into history, by others, known to us as Salomé, whose mysterious act changed the course of history. In this new work, internationally acclaimed adaptor/director Yaël Farber reworks Oscar Wilde's play with ancient Arabic and Hebraic texts. The result is an urgently relevant exploration of the woman's voice in history, oppressed people's power over their own bodies, and the explosive connections between religious and political uprising. NO LINE DANCING: THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 5 – 10AM, AUDITORIUM: Until further Notice- There will be no line dancing on Thursdays at 10:00 AM in the auditorium. Please watch for further announcements when the Line Dancing Class returns. CHANGE OF ADDRESS SALE: THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 5 – 1 – 4PM, COTTAGE 3108: Microwaves, sowing machines, craft items and many other categories. Questions? Contact Pat French, x7778. BALTIMORE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA, “A SEASON OF VIVALDI” @ STRATHMORE: FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 6; Departing Collington at 6:30PM. How do notes on a page communicate an idea? Why do we hear a thunderstorm, winter’s chill or a bird song when we listen to an orchestra play? Vivaldi set out to show Baroque critics that ”program music” had its place among serious compositions. Those ideas he captures in music have made The Four Seasons a concert hall staple and a popular cultural touchstone. Marin Alsop, conductor; Jonathan Carney, violin; Vivaldi: The Four Seasons ANNAPOLIS CHORALE CONCERT: SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 7: The Annapolis Chorale's next concert is November 7, 2015 at 8 PM. Six Collington residents will be in this concert. The program includes John Rutter's "Requiem" and Ola Gjeilo's "Sunrise Mass". Tickets are available at liveartsmaryland.org and by calling 410-280-5640. Interested residents will need to provide their own transportation to/from this concert.

ROUND HOUSE THEATER, “THE NIGHT ALIVE”: SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 8; Departing Collington at 12:45PM. Returning to Collington by 5PM. Residents will stay for the post-show discussion.

About this performance: Tommy is a down-and-out bloke on the outskirts of Dublin. Between dodging his estranged wife and planning his next get-rich-quick scheme, there’s not much to look forward to. But after he saves a woman from a violent attack, they’re both forced to sift through their messy pasts in search of a glimmer of hope. From the author of The Weir and The Seafarer comes the stunning Irish drama the Chicago Tribune calls “raw and beautiful.”

PROTESTANT WORSHIP SERVICE: SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 8 – 1:30PM, CHAPEL: Please welcome to Collington again our friends and neighbors from Woodstream Church. Minister Malcolm Reeves will lead the service. Please remember the time is now 1:30PM. All are invited and welcome. Questions? Please call Ardyce Asire, x7348.

After being a professor of political science at Columbia University he became a senior staff member of the Brookings Institution’s Center for Public Policy Education while Lincoln Gordon was a Brookings Scholar.

BREWERS MEETING: SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 8 – 5PM, DINING ROOM: Let’s brew some beer! We will begin brewing Collington beer in November. If you are an experienced home brewer or if you have no experience but want to learn, you are welcome. The more people we have brewing, the more beer we make, and so the more batches to experiment with different malts, hops, and yeasts. We will be joined in our brewing by Chef Christian Ramsey who is an active home brewer. The first brewers meeting will be Sunday, November 8 at 5pm in the dining room.

FROM PAT KING: CHRISTMAS WINE BOTTLES UPDATE: Many thanks to all who saved wine bottles for me. I will be selling at the November Bazaar. I now have enough bottles. Thanks again! A NOTE FROM FITNESS: MODIFIED POOL HOURS: Effective immediately, pool hours will be modified until Collington secures a permanent lifeguard. Pool hours are currently on the following schedule: Weekdays open 8am – 12noon, Closed on Saturdays. THE PERIMETER TRAIL & THE OLD BURIAL GROUND: Once again, for the first time in over a year, one can not only walk the trail, but turn off and walk to the burial ground that holds the remains of the original owners of far more land around here than just our 128 acres. Two grave stones are still barely legible, one from 1793, the other from 1806. Wednesday the Grounds Committee completed its contract with Ruppert to bring a chipper in to Collington and clean up a significant part of the perimeter trail. The Grounds Committee used its own off-budget funds to get this work done. Ruppert's men and their machine ground up a great deal of dumped slash from the top of the hill [where the ham radio tower is] and on down to the junction with the road near the second gate house. Dead fall was left untouched, as a normal part of the cycle of woodland life. Larger logs that were brought down by the ham radio group were left to rot, as excellent habitat for zillions of unspecified critters. If it's been a while since you've visited the burial ground, take a walk to the top of the hill and turn right. All the slash that used to block access to the burial ground is gone.

UPDATE FROM RESIDENT SERVICES: Resident services is currently open from 10:30AM – 4:30PM. Please feel free to drop by during these hours.
