Limited Submission – W.M. Keck Foundation Funding We are pleased to announce that we are now accepting internal applications for the second 2014 cycle of funding from the W. M. Keck Foundation. Harvard is able to submit one (1) nomination, up to $5,000,000, in each of two funding areas: Medical Research and Science and Engineering (investigators should review the abstracts at http://www.wmkeck.org/grant-programs/research/medical-research-grant-abstracts carefully to determine whether to submit under Science & Engineering or Medical). HSPH applicants are strongly encouraged to consult with ORSD ([email protected]) prior to submitting an internal application to the Office of the Vice Provost for Research so that we can provide guidance on alignment with the Keck’s funding mechanisms. Interested applicants should complete the documentation listed below and send it in either Word or PDF format to [email protected] by Tuesday, July 8, 5:00 pm EST. In the cover email, please provide the name and address of the Principal Investigator, title and department, and the name of any individuals who should be copied on correspondence:

1. A CV of the principal investigator 2. A one-page concept paper. This paper should include:

o an overview of the proposed project emphasizing any unique aspects and pilot studies (for Research Program concepts, indicate area of emphasis for project - medical research or science and engineering research);

o a description of the methodologies and key personnel; o a brief justification of the need for Keck support; and o an estimated budget broken down, if possible, by major areas, e.g., personnel, equipment,

consumable supplies, etc. (budgets can be rough approximations at this stage).

[If there is room, you are free to add other details (e.g., background to put the research into perspective, description of the institution’s prominence in the field, etc.). Avoid illustrations in these single-pagers – you will need all the room for text. If a reference is necessary, abbreviate it as (Science, 323, 45, ‘11). DO NOT USE (Jones et al., 2011).]

3. A list of anticipated collaborators, if any, and;

4. The names of two knowledgeable Harvard faculty in the field who can review the request and provide opinions regarding:

o Potential value of the project o Ability of the applicant to successfully complete it

II. Guidance for Submitting Applications for Keck Funding The WM Keck Foundation supports both senior and early career researchers. Awards range from $500,000 to $5,000,000, but are typically less than $2,000,000. The Foundation supports high-risk, high-reward research in the areas of Science & Engineering and Medical Research. Activities that are not funded are listed at the end of this announcement. You are strongly encouraged to read carefully information about the Science & Engineering and Medical Research programs available on the Keck website (http://www.wmkeck.org/grant-programs/research) The following excerpts may be of particular use as you draft your application: “The Foundation strives to fund endeavors that are distinctive and novel in their approach. It encourages projects that are high-risk with the potential for transformative impact. "High-risk" comprises a number of factors, including questions that push the edge of the field, present unconventional approaches to intractable problems, or challenge the prevailing paradigm. In all our programs, "transformative" may mean creation of a new field of research, development of new instrumentation enabling observations not previously possible, or discovery of knowledge that challenges prevailing perspectives. …. Applicants may find it helpful to look over the abstracts of recent grants for understanding funding priorities.” In a recent external evaluation of its grant-making programs, the Foundation was encouraged to:

• “Continue to encourage interdisciplinary or high risk projects that fall outside of traditional funding programs. The development of risky, innovative technology is often difficult to fund through traditional sources, making it a good target for private philanthropy.

• Encourage projects that can have a transformative effect on their fields or create new fields. • Fund development of pioneering instrumentation, new technologies and novel methodologies, as these

new tools can then be available to be used in the field or across fields. • Consider potential collateral benefits when reviewing a risky project, as those benefits can mitigate the

possibility of failure. A project may be worth trying, even if the ultimate outcome is not what was originally predicted or desired.

• Support a wide range of institutions and organizations, including “up-and-coming” institutions that are pursuing innovative and transformative projects. Often smaller institutions have specific areas of excellence that can be nurtured and developed.

• Seek a diverse set of individuals according to their career stages and research topics as well as gender and ethnicity. The committees found that support for early career investigators can yield high-payoff results.

• Consider institutional leadership and commitment carefully, as they are critical to the success of a project.”

The Keck Foundation will not fund the following activities:

• Routine institutional or general operating expenses, general endowments, deficit reduction, or general or administrative overhead expenses

• General and federated campaigns, including fundraising events, dinners, or mass mailings • Support for conduit organizations, unified funds, or organizations that use grant funds from donors to

support other organizations or individuals • Clinical research or treatment trials • Sponsorship of conferences or seminars, publication of books or the production of films or theater, and

public policy research or activities of any kind • Student tuition or fees

Limited Submission - Raymond P. Lavietes Foundation For the eleventh year, The Raymond P. Lavietes Foundation has invited HSPH to submit four potential research projects which the Foundation may choose one to fund at $50,000 ($40K direct; $10K indirect costs). Raymond Lavietes passed away after battling cancer, which has guided the Foundation to fund cancer-related research. The Foundation is particularly interested in work that can be leveraged for larger grants and projects that have a domestic focus. Successful proposals should be relatable and digestible to a lay audience. If you are interested in applying, please send a one-page project description to Anamarija (Ana) Kristic, [email protected] by Friday, July 11. The HSPH Office of Research Strategy and Development will coordinate the internal review and nomination process for Lavietes Foundation proposals.

Past applicants are encouraged to re-apply. Internal deadline: July 11th Funder deadline: August 15th

Together, the awards will help establish a diverse community of passionate individuals with opportunities to participate in patient-centered research. More information about the Eugene Washington PCORI Engagement Awards. Letters of Inquiry (LOI) are received on a rolling basis.

PCORI Funding Opportunities PCORI has three broad funding cycles a year. Starting with May 2013, cycles are designated by the month and year that applications are due. More targeted and special funding opportunities may be available outside of these cycles.

There are some differences in the latest round of PFAs, issued Feb. 5, including the fact that for many of them, Letters of Intent (LOIs) are competitive. This means they'll be reviewed for their responsiveness and fit with program goals and authors will be notified if they're invited to submit a full application. Be sure to check the details of the PFA to which you're applying.
