Introduction The festive season is right around the corner and as is the norm

around this time meat consumption is going to increase

However this is not always the case the rest of the year Despite Ugandarsquos big

livestock population which stands at more than 17 million heads of cattle as a

market it has a shortfall of 900000 tonnes a year for both processed and

unprocessed beef products data from the Uganda Meat Producers Co-

operative Union Ltd shows

Cattle is expected to have attained optimum weight of 450kg at a slaughter age

of between 18 and 24 months but cattle in Uganda donrsquot attain that weight due

to poor genetics that donrsquot easily respond to feeding Ugandarsquos meat sector is

further constrained by low income levels of most Ugandans that inhibit people

from eating meat The national per capita meat consumption in Uganda is

estimated at 6kg compared to between 50kg to 60kg per capita in other

developed countries It is also far below the 50kg recommended by the Food and Agriculture Organization and World Health

Organization

Regular de-worming (every three months) should be done Control tick infestation through regular spraying at least once a week or

otherwise depending on the acaricides in use

Movement of animals

Do not bring sick animals into the farm or animals from an area infested with disease Observe quarantine regulations

When purchasing new stock ensure that the animal is healthy and has had any necessary vaccinations before moving onto your farm

If you do not do this a sick cow can wipe out your entire heard

Lastly keep a good relationship with your veterinary doctor near you in case you notice any abnormalities in any of your animals

The country produces 142000 metric tonnes of meat with beef contributing 107000 goat meat 28000 metric tonnes and sheep 5000

tonnes and the sector contributes about 17 per cent of Ugandarsquos GDP though it could do better if the market is structured A farmer

who is interested in large scale beef production would do well to attach himherself to an area cooperative dealing in this business

That way the farmer is not exposed to just the local market but can find opportunities for export
