When Selwyn was consecrated bishop of New Zealand in October 1841, the Church of England in the South Pacific was confined to the Australasian colonies. The immediate and formal cause of its entry into the Pacific mission field was an error in Selwyn's Letters Patent which defined the northern boundary of his newly-created diocese as 34° of latitude north instead of south. Selwyn's ready acceptance of this document as a commission to evangelize the pagan inhabitants within his see's distended borders found confirmation in a valedictory letter from Archbishop Howley of Canterbury, who exhorted him to regard New Zealand as 'a fountain diffusing the streams of salvation over the islands and coasts of the Pacific'. It was on Howley's letter rather than the dubious warrant of a Colonial Office clerk that Selwyn ultimately based his claim to spiritual responsibility for the Melanesian islands. George Augustus Selwyn (5 April 1809 – 11 April 1878) was the first Anglican Bishop of New Zealand. He was Bishop of New Zealand (which included Melanesia) from 1841 to 1858. His diocese was then subdivided and Selwyn was Primate of New Zealand from 1858 to 1868. Returning to Britain, Selwyn served as Bishop of Litchfield from 1868 to 1878. After his death, Selwyn College, Cambridge was founded to honour his life and contribution to scholarship and religion. The college and a number of other educational facilities continue to uphold the legacy of the bishop. This year we celebrate the 175 anniversary of Bishop Selwyn arriving in New Zealand.

Bishop Selwyn's journal, written during his voyage to Melanesia between July and November 1857, is illustrated with colourful

sketches of islands, dwellings and people.
