Where Will Our Children Be? by John D. Telgren
Where Will Our Children Be? Cont’d on p2
“Shema Yisrael, Yahweh Eloheynu, Yahweh Ehad”
This phrase is the centerpiece of the Hebrew faith. Their entire faith rested on this statement. It is usually rendered in English as,
“Hear, O Israel: The LORD is our God, the LORD is one.” Deuteronomy 6:4
It is interesting what instruction is given alongside this crucial piece of theology.
"These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up. You shall bind them as a sign on
your hand and they shall be as frontals on your forehead. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and
on your gates.” Deuteronomy 6:6-9
Alongside the centerpiece of their faith was the instruction to pass it on to their children. According to this verse, there are three requirements for this to happen.
1) Be Genuine “These words … shall be on your heart.” This is a pre-requisite in order to teach our chil-dren. Children seem to have built in baloney detectors and will most likely not commit themselves to something we do not commit to.
2) Be Intentional “...talk of them when you sit in your house...“. The Christian faith is an objective faith. Among other things, it consists of facts, doctrines, practi-cal instructions, and stories. The elements are what en-able a disciple to make godly choices in his life. Children do not learn these by osmosis or by accident. Teaching must be intentional.

3) Be Spontaneous “...talk of them ... when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up…”. Someone said faith is more caught than it is taught. This is so true. Facts can be taught. But spiritual formation and maturity is something that comes from talking about and modeling Christian principles for life as life is happen-ing. Life is full of “teachable moments” if parents slow down and take the time to recognize them and turn them into par-ables or a memorable teaching.
So amid all the busyness of life, parents need to slow down and recognize what is really important. Parents need to ask, “Is what I am doing going to help my children be strong in the faith long after they leave home?”
Everyone!
A Note from Michael-- “If you have no desire to become a class teacher, I want to encour-age you to attend anyway. This seminar is for more than teachers; it’s great for anyone who wants to be a better Bible student. Much of what we discuss will help you mine the riches of Scripture for yourself. Whether you want to be a better Bible student or teacher, I hope to see you on November 10th!”

Whether you’re a Pre-ker or a Senior, you’re going to need more than just notebooks, pencils, and a strong book bag. You’re going to school, willingly or unwillingly, to learn, but there are truths you need to remember during the next school year. 1. Thinking may be the most critical thing you ever do. You’re going to school to learn how to think, not to pass tests. Whatever Christians do with their lives, whether we eat or drink or run a company or teach second grade or develop software or change diapers, are we aiming to do it to the glory of God-1 Corinthians 10:31. 2. The most important book you’ll read this fall is your Bible. Because of all the assigned pages, you’ll be tempted to sideline your Bible reading until the next test has passed, the next paper is done, or the next break is here. Your time soaking in Scripture will be the most fruitful and shaping time of your education. Nothing can replace the wealth you will find there. 3. Someone younger than you is watching you. It took me several years to appreciate the influence I had over those younger than me. Sixth graders can’t wait to be eighth-graders, who can’t wait to be freshmen, who can’t wait to be juniors, who can’t wait to be in college. So, someone younger than you is watching you, and probably wants to be like you. 4. Failure is coming. Regardless of how hard you work this year, you will fail. You may fail to serve your classmate patiently or steward your time effectively or respect your parents humbly or do your schoolwork faithfully. So whether you’re going to walk, drive, or take the bus for the first day of classes, as you pack up, prepare your heart and mind for the work. By God’s grace, this year could be a breakthrough in your personal passion for him, your ministry to others on campus, and your readiness for a long life lived with and for Jesus. Todd
