Spilsby
Spilsby is a market town in the East Lindsey district of Lincolnshire, England. It lies at
the southern edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds and north of the Fenlands.
The town has been a rural market town for more than 700 years.
At the centre of town is an open square or traditional market place. Markets take place
on a Monday. As Spilsby is located within a predominantly agricultural area, much of
the market produce consists of locally grown vegetables and meat.
The population of the town was 2,336 in the 2001 census.
The area has been occupied since pre-historic times. An Iron Age hill fort was built at
the tip of the Wolds promontory, at nearby West Keal.
The Spilsby area was visited and occupied by the Romans from the 1st century until
the 4th century AD. A substantial Roman villa or high-status Romano-British farmhouse
once stood near the town.
Spilsby literally translates from the phrase "Spila's-by", where -by is old Norse for
"place of dwelling". Hence, it meant "Spila's village"; Spila being the
local Viking warlord or chieftain. The town was recorded in the Domesday book as
"Spilesbei”. In 1082 it was not much more than a large farmstead and few surrounding
crofts under the squireship of the Bishop of Durham.
A charter was granted to a John de Beke (or John Beck) in 1255 to hold a weekly
market in Spilsby each Monday and a three-day annual fair in July. At the east end of
the town centre’s market place stands the medieval Buttercross monument.
Sir John Franklin, the sea captain, governor of Tasmania, and explorer was born in
Spilsby. He died during an expedition to the Canadian Arctic, while attempting to chart
the Northwest Passage.
Lincoln
For up-to-date information, check out http://www.visitlincoln.com/ Lincoln developed from the Roman town of Lindum Colonia, which developed from an Iron Age settlement. Lincoln's major landmarks are Lincoln Cathedral, a fine example of English Gothic architecture, and Lincoln Castle, an 11th-century Norman castle. The city is also home to the University of Lincoln and Bishop Grosseteste University. Lincoln is situated in a gap in the Lincoln Cliff 141 miles (227 kilometres) north of London, at an elevation of 20.4 metres (66.9 feet) above sea level by the River Witham, stretching up to 72.8 metres (238.8 feet) above sea level in the uphill area around the cathedral.
Bateman’s Brewery
Batemans Brewery is an English brewery based at Salem Bridge Brewery in Wainfleet, Lincolnshire, and founded in 1874. The company owns 69 public houses, with 23 situated in Boston alone.
Ben Keaton
Ben will be filming a Watsfair documentary as part of the UK’s contribution to the project’s European Shared Treasure. Ben works with pupils at LJFS on a regular basis and is filming this week with a hand-picked team of students. “Ben Keaton has been working in film, television and theatre for over 20 years. In that time he has written five series for the BBC and one for Channel 4. He has won three Best Actor awards, the Perrier Award for comedy and been nominated for an Olivier. He has starred in the West End and been a main character on BBC's Casualty for two years. He also wrote and directed the live arena tour of Sky’s Brainiac and the first touring production for the London Science Museum. He is a visiting lecturer at the University of Lincoln since 2008. In 2012 Ben pooled all this experience and formed The Lincoln Film and Television School.”
