Spring is here Bunnies are roaming flowers are blooming and Easter brunches are

being planned and prepared As the season of gatherings and picnics blossoms

remember the following tips from the Center for Science in the Public interest

Ignore the five second rule- Even after one second food can pick up

enough bacteria to make someone sick

Avoid mold- Throw out foods covered in mold and donrsquot smell

them (it can cause breathing problems) Soft foods with spots of mold (ex

meats yogurt and soft cheese) need to be tossed Hard foods such as carrots

and hard cheeses can have the moldy spots cut off and still be used (itrsquos harder

for the mold to travel in denser foods)

Prevent cross-contamination Always keep raw meat seafood

and eggs separate Use separate cutting boards and wash hands

after handling

Keep your kitchen clean and dry- Wet sponges and counters left to sit breed

bacteria Keep a supply of clean dry dish towels and clean and change your

sponge regularly To clean your sponge try putting it in the dishwasher or wet

and microwave it for 60 seconds (as long as it doesnrsquot contain metal) Using a

bleach or lemon juice bath does not effectively clean sponges Clean and dry

counter tops regularly with soap and water The most effective way to remove

germs and viruses is with old fashion scrubbing Parasites on counters cannot

be removed by just spraying with disinfectant

Wash your hands Scrub with soap for a full 20 seconds under running water

Practicing regular hand washing helps to keep you healthy

Store leftovers correctly- A second feast isnrsquot very satisfying if it makes you

sick

Remember 2 hours- 2 inches- 4 days

Refrigerate foods within 2 hours of cooking

Donrsquot make it more than 2 inches deep when you store it (it will cool faster)

Use leftovers in the refrigerator within 4 days or freeze them

(Except stuffing and gravy which must be used within 2 days)

Have a blessed Easter

Have a blessed Easter

missioner and Competitive Basketball Commissioner positions
