Adult Sunday School—Weird Tales and Ecumenical Quizzes

Sunday, May 8 – Wait Wait . . . Don’t Tell Me!®-Ecumenical Clergy Edition The classic NPR game comes to life in Huffman Hall as Anglican, Methodist, and Lutheran pastors join our panel to discuss their denominations. You’ll definitely want to be part of our interactive studio audience for this fun exploration of ecumenism.

Sunday, May 15 - no class on Pentecost Sunday. Go out to breakfast with your St Matt’s friends, but don’t eat too much as the parish picnic is going to be crazy delicious.

Drawing from the likes of Walt Whitman, Wilfred Owen, and Mary Oliver, this session will explore how poetry helps us express the big stuff in our lives. Bring your own favorite poem for a little open mic time at the end of this session.

Come on out for a lively discussion and fresh coffee! Submitted by Merrill Wade and Christian Hawley

Family Communion Training & Episcopal Church in a Nutshell!

Family Ministry will be hosting Family Communion Training and Episcopal Church in a Nutshell! on Wednesday, May 11, from 5:00 – 7:00 pm in B-21. Children and parents are

invited to this opportunity. This will be an introductory program for children and adults to discover the many aspects of communion and what it means to be Episcopalian. Children are always welcome at the communion rail; however, the parent usually decides when a child is

ready to begin to receive communion. A child can certainly participate in communion without being a graduate of the Communion Class; however, there comes a time when a child is ready

for more formal communion instruction. Participating in this class will help your child learn the meaning of Communion.

All are welcome at the altar. You will have the opportunity to discover answers to your Eucharistic questions. The adult portion of this training (Episcopal Church in a Nutshell!) will go over the many aspects of our Episcopal faith and give adults some Q & A time with clergy.

If your child is between the ages of 5 and 12, has been baptized, not yet attended a Communion Class, and is asking ques-tions about what it means, please sign them up for this training. Please contact Susan Goodman at [email protected] for more information or to register your child. Heavy snacks will be served at the training. Submitted by Susan Goodman

Registration for Men's Annual Retreat, June 3-6, 2016 “The Kingdom of God is within You … The Kingdom of God is among You” All men of the parish are invited to attend the 2016 Men's Retreat, June 3-5, 2016, at the Well Spring Retreat Center, near Blanco, TX. Enjoy good fellowship and good food with the men of St. Matthew’s. Travis Helms will lead the Retreat Program on “Living Into the Parables of the Kingdom.” Jesus’ parables concerning the kingdom of God are some of the most intriguing in all the Gospels. Variously described as yeast, a mustard seed, hidden treasure, a merchant searching for pearls, etc., what did the kingdom mean to Jesus; and what do his parables have to tell us about the Christian life today? Travis will take us through a close study of the texts to help uncover the deeper meaning be-hind the parables of the kingdom, and its significance for our lives and work. Visit the Registration Table before or after Sunday 10:30 Services in May for information and registration, or access the Retreat Registration Brochure at http://s3.amazonaws.com/dfc_attachments/public/documents/3221846/St__Matthews_Mens_Retreat_Brochure_2016_v2.pdf. Remembrances Memorial Wall—Discounted Tiles Offer Ending Soon!

If you have not yet purchased a tile for the Remembrances Memorial Wall, time is running out to get them at the discounted rate—the 4x8 tiles cost $150—a $100 discount—and the 8x8s cost $400 with the $100 discount.

In November 2015, the Vestry approved a proposal from the Memorial Garden Committee (MGC) to build a Remembranc-es Memorial Wall adjacent to the Common Urn slab. The wall provide spaces to mount 4”x8” and 8”x8” etched and fired clay tiles memorializing a person you wish remembered. The 4x8 tiles allow two lines of text while 8x8 tiles allow four lines of text. Additionally, a line with the relevant dates is etched at the bottom of each tile.

For the near future, the MGC will have a table in the Commons to answer questions and sell tiles. Please contact Larry Richards, MGC Chair, at [email protected] for more information. Submitted by Larry Richards

St. Matthew’s Hailey Nichols, 2016 Brotherhood of St. Andrew Scholarship Winner

The Texas Assembly of the Brotherhood of St. Andrew has announced that Hailey Nichols—a lifelong member of St. Matthew’s—is one of two 2016 Scholarship Winners. Texas A&M, Hailey's chosen university, will receive a check for $2,000 toward her college expenses.

Hailey's involvement with the St Matthew’s and Diocese of Texas youth programs, and her academic success and involve-ment at AISD's Anderson High School, met and exceeded the Brotherhood's criteria for this scholarship.

In Hailey’s submission to the Brotherhood, Susan Goodman, St. Matthew Family Minister, stated "Hailey is incredibly mature and is a strong leader. She is a fine example of service to others."

"I would like to thank the entire congregation of St. Matthew's who have supported me and my family since the day I was born. I could not ask for a better support system and family. All my love to my mom, dad, brother, and grandparents for their continued love and assistance throughout the ups and downs life has brought to me this far! God Bless y'all." - Hailey

Our rector, The Rev. Merrill Wade, commented that “we are very impressed that Hailey did the hard work of submitting her application to the Brotherhood. And she is so deserving of this support from the Episcopal Church. I offer thanks for Don Neely and members of the Brotherhood here at St. Matthew’s for partnering with the church staff in giving this opportunity to our students and offer happy congratulations to Hailey for earning this high honor and college support!”

On behalf of the Brotherhood, we extend our congratulations to Hailey, her parents Larry & Tracey and grandparents Jack & Rita Eccles. Submitted by the St. Matthew’s Chapter of the Brotherhood of St. Andrew

Cooking for Caritas

Extra volunteers are needed to join St. Matthew’s Cooking with Caritas team. Once a month, the team prepares freshly-cooked meals for 200 Caritas clients. They meet for two hours in the Huffman Hall kitchen after the 10:30 am Sunday service.

The only requirement is that you will need to obtain a food handlers certificate, which is an easy on-line test. To learn more and to volunteer please email Frank Lynn at [email protected].

The Cooking with Caritas program costs $200 a month. If cooking’s not your thing, please consider donating a month’s meal. Our sincere thanks to the generous St. Matt’s supporters who sponsored the meals in 2015. If you would like to be a sponsor, please contact Jack Robertson at [email protected].

Caritas is a local non-profit which serves over 20,000 people annually whose opportunities have been diminished by poverty and homelessness.

This week’s main needs for the Caritas Food Pantries are: canned ham, fruit cocktail and pineapple; cold cereals; Hamburger Helper-type meals, and dried pasta. The pantries could also use: shaving cream, toothpaste and tooth-brushes. Please ensure that food items are not past their expiration date nor in glass containers. Caritas collection baskets can be found in the Sanctuary Commons and in Huffman Hall.

If you weren’t able to bring an item this week and would like to contribute, you are welcome to place a $1.00 donation in the Caritas money box, near the collection baskets in the Sanctuary Commons. Submitted by Jane Baxter Lynn

Thank You to Legacy Society Members The Permanent Endowment of St. Matthew’s is supported by the Legacy Society. The Legacy Society is comprised of church members who have communicated to the church that they have chosen to name St. Matthew’s in their estate plan in some way (for example, with a gift of a particular asset, making the church the beneficiary of a particular account, or with a gift of a percentage or defined amount of the estate). The Endowment Committee would like to take this opportunity as we approach Pentecost to recognize these members: Legacy Society members are recognized by the church on a plaque that hangs in the Commons. The plaque is updated periodically, and the Endowment Committee is in the process of updating it now. If you are a Legacy Society member and do NOT see your name listed here, please email Ann O’Connell, Endowment Committee Chair, at [email protected] so we may add it.

Family Service Dates: May 1: Family Service May 8: Family Service May 15: Pentecost—Combined Service, with music and luncheon May 22: Family Service May 29: Family Service (Memorial Day weekend)

From Gloria Bankler, Children’s Minister

Having the title of Children’s Minister at St. Matthew’s has been an honor and privilege. In my almost twelve years as a mem-ber here, I have met so many wonderful people; and every time I participate in a new ministry, I deepen my love and respect for our community. In an effort to find more balance in my life, I have made the decision to resign from my position as Children’s Minister; July 10 will be my last Sunday. I will still be a member of our church as I was before I took the position.

As my children get closer to leaving for college I find myself make difficult choices about how much I want to be away from home. I love St. Matthew’s deeply so this decision was not reached lightly, but it is time I move on and continue to focus on my family and writing, both of which I love dearly. Thank you all for your loving support during my time as Children’s Minister. Also, thank you for letting me spend time with your lovely children. It has been a joy getting to know them better. They have enriched my life more than I can articulate.

Yours in Christ, Gloria Bankler

S.O.S.—a letter from the Youth Group

Mission & Vision Statement: A community of fun and fellowship, exploring, growing and serving through the Power of Christ.”

Scriptural Motto: “Mightier than the thunder of the great waters, mightier than the breakers of the sea— the LORD on high is mighty” (Psalm 93:4)

On behalf of St. Matthew’s Youth Ministry, we, as elected “firsts among equals,” would like to take this opportunity to present our new Youth community name, logo and mission/vision statement.

After much prayer, discernment and conversation with Travis and the Youth Ministry Team, we have chosen the name “SOS” to represent our shared identity and beliefs.

The meaning of the name is two-fold. The primary significance harkens to the nautical abbreviation for "Save Our Ship,” and includes the alternative meanings of "Save Our Souls” and "Send Out Sustenance.”

The name is meant to suggest the circumstances in which many middle and high school students find themselves. Our world and schools can often seem confusing and chaotic. With the constant inundation of negative pressure from peers and social media, sometimes it feels difficult to stay afloat.

S.O.S. is a place where we stay spiritually buoyant and supported as a commu-nity. Through worship, formation and fellowship, we become equipped to deal with life’s challenges—and, if necessary—throw out a “life-preserver” to others in need.

A secondary meaning of our community also draws on Ephesians 6:17, which speaks of “the Sword of the Spirit, the Word of God.” At S.O.S., we explore ways to let God’s Word inform and empower us as we make decisions (Additionally, there is the fact that we meet as 6th graders - 17 year olds, start our fellowship at approximately 6:17 after a few minutes of gathering for meetings (and, of course, always have “Snacks On Sundays”).

We would always be happy to tell any of you more about our community, and welcome any safeguarded adults to participate in our regular fellowship events and outreach projects.

With thanks and many blessings,
