Weight Loss Surgery

Overweight is generally defined as having more body fat than is optimally healthy. Being overweight is a common condition, especially where food supplies are plentiful and lifestyles are sedentary. As much as 64% of the United States adult population is considered either overweight or obese, and this percentage has increased over the last four decades.

Excess weight has reached epidemic proportions globally, with more than 1 billion adults being either overweight or obese. Increases have been observed across all age groups.

A healthy body requires a minimum amount of fat for the proper functioning of the hormonal, reproductive, and immune systems, as thermal insulation, as shock absorption for sensitive areas, and as energy for future use. But the accumulation of too much storage fat can impair movement and flexibility, and can alter the appearance of the body.

Morbid Obesity is a medical condition in which excess body fat has accumulated to the extent that it may have an adverse effect on health, leading to reduced life expectancy and/or increased health problems. Body mass index (BMI), a measurement which compares weight and height, defines people as overweight (pre-obese) if their BMI is between 25 kg/m2 and 30 kg/m2, and obese when it is greater than 30 kg/m2.

Obesity increases the likelihood of various diseases, particularly heart disease, type 2 diabetes, breathing difficulties during sleep, certain types of cancer, and osteoarthritis. Morbid Obesity is most commonly caused by a combination of excessive dietary calories, lack of physical activity, and genetic susceptibility, although a few cases are caused primarily by genes, endocrine disorders, medications or psychiatric illness. Evidence to support the view that some obese people eat little yet gain weight due to a slow metabolism is limited; on average obese people have a greater energy expenditure than their thin counterparts due to the energy required to maintain an increased body mass.

Morbid Obesity Causes

Medical problems commonly resulting from untreated morbid obesity include the following:

• Diabetes • Hypertension • Heart disease • Stroke • Certain cancers, including breast and colon • Depression • Osteoarthritis

Affected people may gradually develop hypoxemia (decreased blood oxygen saturation) and have problems with sleep apnea (periodic cessation of breathing while asleep).

Bariatric surgery, or weight loss surgery, includes a variety of procedures performed on people who are obese. Weight loss is achieved by reducing the size of the stomach with an implanted medical device (gastric banding) or through removal of a portion of the stomach (sleeve gastrectomy or biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch) or by resecting and re-routing the small intestines to a small stomach pouch (gastric bypass surgery).

Severe morbid obesity is a chronic condition that is very difficult to treat. For some people, weight loss surgery -- or bariatric surgery -- helps by restricting food intake or interrupting digestive processes. But keep in mind that weight loss surgery is a serious undertaking. You should clearly understand the pros and cons associated with the procedures before making a decision.

Advantages of Weight Loss Surgery

Most patients lose weight quickly and continue to lose for 18 to 24 months after the procedure. With the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, many patients maintain a weight loss of 60 to 70 percent of their excess weight for 10 years or more. With BPD/DS, most studies report an average weight loss of 75 to 80 percent of excess weight. Because combined weight loss surgery result in greater weight loss than restrictive operations, they may also be more effective in improving the health problems associated with severe obesity, such as hypertension (high blood pressure), sleep apnea, type 2 diabetes, and osteoarthritis.

Weight Loss Diets

Some people think that skipping breakfast will help them lose weight. It won't.

Studies show a direct link between breakfast and successful weight loss, and that compared to breakfast skippers, breakfast eaters generally:

• Eat fewer calories throughout the day • Eat less saturated fat and cholesterol • Have better nutrition habits • Weigh less (women 4kgs/men 3kgs less).

Weight Loss Complication

One of the least-known complications of rapid weight loss is gallstones. When your body is metabolizing fat, it can cause your liver to absorb more cholesterol. Lack of proper nutrients can also keep your gallbladder from emptying bile, and gallstones can develop.

Dehydration can also be a problem, especially among people who are working out a lot, runners, and people who are taking phentermine, which suppresses thirst as well as appetite. The easiest way to stay on top of your water intake is to fill a 64 oz. container of water every morning and make sure you finish it before bed.

Weight Loss programs for Teenagers

Morbid Obesity amongst youth and teens is growing at epidemic proportions. Overweight teens are more likely to develop into overweight adults, carrying heightened risk for heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, shortened lifespan and some forms of cancer. With the tremendous social pressure to be model-thin and physically attractive, being overweight is often associated with low self esteem, poor body image and depression.
