How Many Cows are in Canada? If you had to get rid of one US state, which would

it be? If you were a sports car, what color would you be? And finally, a penguin walks through that door right now wearing a sombrero. What does he say and why is he here? Um excuse me?

Asking weird interview questions, like the examples above, is the newest and coolest way for normal businesses to imitate the startup culture millennials and job-seekers so desperately seek. Many HR bloggers attribute Google as the pioneer “asker” of weird interview questions. The search engine giant started posting their interview questions as a way to highlight their unique and creative culture and soon, other technology companies and businesses followed suit.

Top Talent?

Read the 2013 Top 25 Oddball Interview Questions

In 2007 the career community website, Glassdoor, hit the scene and thousands of users began posting their interview questions to the site. Today Glassdoor publishes an annual “Top 25 Oddball Interview Questions of the Year” list and encourages companies to post the craziest questions they have ever asked.

The trend continues worldwide as hiring managers scour the internet (and ironically use Google!) for the wildest, weirdest, and wackiest interview questions to ask candidates during an interview thinking they have cracked the code of finding the perfect hire.

The problem with this trend lies with hiring managers who are quickly learning that interesting interview questions are the “easy” way out of developing interview guides and using researched behavioral interview questions. This trend is teaching hiring managers that they can ask mind-boggling questions and somehow come away with top talent.
