2004 2004 2004 2004 2004 LYCOMING COLLEGE LYCOMING COLLEGE The Mary Lindsay Welch Honors Hall Built in 1884 as a meeting place for the local German Turn Verein social club, the building was later used for a variety of purposes, including a church and several businesses. The College purchased the property in 1999. After extensive restoration and interior modification, the building was dedicated by the college in 2005. The facility contains the Shangraw Perfor- mance Hall where the Lycoming College choral ensembles perform. Mary Lindsay Welch, for whom the building was named, and her husband Marshall have been generous supporters of the College and of Williamsport.

The Lycoming CollegeTour Choir Conducted by Dr.Fred Thayer, the Choirhas been widelyacclaimed as one of thefinest college musicalgroups in the East.Since its inception in1947 by Walter McIver,the Choir has presentedconcerts in every stateeast of the MississippiRiver. They havetoured in Canada,England, Puerto Rico,and Europe. The Tour Choir isselected each year bycompetitive auditionfrom the 135-voiceCollege Choir, which iscomprised of studentsfrom all academicfields. Approximately40 students are chosenannually to perform intwo weekend tours anda 10-day spring breaktour. Foreign toursoccur approximatelyevery three years. In its six decades ofmusic, the LycomingCollege Choir hasperformed hundreds ofconcerts, includingappearances in theNational Cathedral, theWashington Shrine, theCrystal Cathedral, andNew York City’s SaintJohn the Divine and

Saint Patrick’sCathedral. Theensemble has sung withthe Gregg SmithSingers, the Chieftains,and Barry Manilow.The choir has beenfeatured twice in theHoliday Celebrationsat the White House.Last spring, the choirreleased its sixthCD entitled“Cloudburst.” Thisspring, in a thirdappearance at theCrystal Cathedral, thechoir will be the “loftchoir” for thenationally televisedservices. As a premieremusical group atLycoming, the Choirperforms annually atmajor campus events,including FreshmanConvocation, FamilyWeekend, Chapel andBaccalaureate services,Commencement, andthe ChristmasCandlelight Service.

The Conductor andAccompanists As professor ofmusic and director ofchoral activities atLycoming College,Fred Thayer conductsthree choirs: LycomingCollege Choir (135members), Chamber

Choir (28 members),and Tour Choir (40members). The Tour Choir haspresented concerts inevery state east of theMississippi River,California, Puerto Rico,and Europe. In May2004, the ensembletoured in Spain. Fred Thayer’sgraduate degrees are incomposition with aDoctorate of MusicalArts from CornellUniversity, studyingwith Karel Husa andRobert Palmer. As amember of ASCAP, hehas received 22 annualASCAP Standard Panelawards. Hiscompositions includetwo operas, three worksfor orchestra, two worksfor band, and more than65 choral works. During the summers,Fred Thayer is theassociate conductorwith the Gregg SmithSingers at the

Adirondack Festival ofAmerican Music inSaranac Lake, N.Y.The Gregg SmithSingers and theAdirondack ChamberOrchestra have jointlycommissioned him towrite nine works since1982. If it’s ever springagain was commis-sioned in 2005 for theGSS’s 50th Anniversary. He has served as amember of both thePennsylvaniaHumanities CouncilPanel and the Choral/Opera Panel for the PACouncil on the Arts. Richard J. Lakeyis currently the Directorof Music at St. Mark’sLutheran Church inWilliamsport. He is agraduate ofWestminster ChoirCollege, Princeton, NJ,where he received aBachelor of MusicDegree in ChurchMusic. While atWestminster, he wasawarded the AlexanderMcCurdy OrganScholarship, andthrough his musicministry has givennumerous organrecitals. Lakey earneda Master of MusicEducation at Indiana

University ofPennsylvania. He has been a part-time instructor of organand piano at Lycoming,and for the past 17years has accompaniedthe Lycoming CollegeChoir. In previousyears, the Choir hasperformed his Te Deumand several anthems.His Missa Brevis wasperformed by theLycoming CollegeChamber Choir and theGregg Smith Singers.Paraclete Press haspublished several of hiscompositions for choir.Also, Shawnee Pressrecently published oneof his compositions. Charles Masters, anative of Williamsport,graduated fromMansfield Universitywith a B.M. inEducation and PianoPerformance. Mastersserves as Classroom

Music Teacher andDirector of MiddleSchool and HighSchool ChoralActivities in theLoyalsock TownshipSchool District. Inaddition, Charlesaccompanies for theLycoming CollegeChoir and ChamberChoir. Charles’ passionfor music includes theclassical and jazzidioms. He performsregularly with the B.D.Bop Jazz Project andventures into funk andsmooth jazz with BopTop.

Survey of WesternMusic. More advancedcourses include Theory,Composition,Conducting, andSpecial Topics inMusic. Facilities include anewly renovatedconcert hall, piano-equipped practicerooms, a harpsichord, acustom built listeningroom, and a fullyequipped electronicstudio. The concerthall features twoconcert grand pianosand a two-manualMoller pipe organ. Majors and non-majors have theopportunity toparticpate in a varietyof ensembles such asthe Lycoming Choir,Tour Choir, ChamberChoir, Concert Band,Woodwind and BrassQuintets, and theWilliamsportSymphony Orchestra.

Fellowships The Chamber Choir,that performs diverserepertoire from vocaljazz to major works, ismade up of ChoralFellowship recipients.Each member receivesan annually renewable$500 tuition remission.

By auditioning,students of all majorsmay qualify for thisaward.

Scholarships Music scholarshipsare available for bothmajors and nonmajors.They range from $500to $2500 and arerenewable each year.Money is awarded onthe basis of auditionsthat are heard by themusic faculty.Auditions are requiredof music majors andare suggested fornonmajors.
