PRAYER & WORSHIP

FROM THE PASTOR

Arleen McGinn Robert McMaster Dolores Zuppello

Please pray for the souls of the faithful departed.

My most sincere thanks to all who provided their time and talent to make the Easter celebrations so joyous and beautiful: Sanctuary ministers and altar servers, choirs and musicians, decorators, church cleaners, and parish staff. Special thanks to Laura O'Keeffe and Karen Maurer for planning and hosting the "Palm Cross" workshop on Palm Sunday! Additional gratitude to Tasha Leslie, Karen Maurer and Easter Bunny "Kevin" for the wonderful Easter Egg Hunt held last weekend!

May God bless you well and abundantly for your self-less service!

Congratulations to Taylore Bickel and Natalia Rivera Silva who received at the Easter Vigil the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist. May their lives be blessed abundantly. May they seek an even closer relationship with Christ, and in a deeper way, the fullness of the love of God through their practice of the Catholic Faith. Special thanks to Deacon Paul, Sharon Smoller, and Christine Martino for their assistance with the RCIA program and their companionship with our newly initiated Catholics!

Faith cannot be lived and practiced on a whim. If by whim, we will fail to know Him; we will fail to understand Him; we will fail the journey. The false idea that we can choose to recognize God, or not, to worship God, or not, foolishly ignores that there are consequences for the “nots”.

DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY

Question: Where did the feast of Divine Mercy come from?

Answer: If you were born well before the year 2000, you know the feast of Divine Mercy has not always been celebrated in the Church. In the early 1900s, a young Polish nun began receiving private revelations. Jesus appeared to her during her times of prayer, speaking a message of mercy and love for the world. She received a set of prayers — the Divine Mercy Chaplet — and the request to have a feast day established to remind the Church of the mercy of God. St. Faustina died in 1938, on the cusp of war and in the midst of one of the most violent centuries in the history of the world. Her story and her diaries began circulating in Poland and beyond. It quickly became apparent that this was a holy young woman, and the cause for her canonization opened. In the year 2000, she was canonized by the first-ever Polish pope, St. John Paul II. On her canonization day, he established the second Sunday of Easter as Divine Mercy Sunday, “a perennial invitation to the Christian world to face, with confidence in divine benevolence, the difficulties and trials that mankind will experience in the years to come.” ©LPi

SECOND READING | 1 JOHN 5:1-6

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

GLORIA

1. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father.

2. Lord Jesus Christ, only begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us.

3. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

Cantor, then all repeat

FIRST READING | ACTS 4:32-35

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM 118:1-2,16-17, 22-23

1. Give praise to the LORD, for he is good; his mercy endures forever. Let the house of Israel say, “His mercy endures forever.”

2. The LORD’s right hand has done mighty deeds; his right hand is exalted. I shall not die, I shall live and recount the deeds of the Lord.

3. The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. By the LORD has this been done, a marvel in our eyes.

Text: Psalm 118: The Revised Grail, Conception Abbey © 2010 GIA Publications, Inc. Tune: Fr. James C. Chepponis, ©1994, 2011

The community of believers was of one heart and mind, and no one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they had everything in common. With great power the apostles bore witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great favor was accorded them all. There was no needy person among them,

for those who owned property or houses would sell them, bring the proceeds of the sale, and put them at the feet of the apostles, and they were distributed to each according to need.

Beloved: Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is begotten by God, and everyone who loves the Father loves also the one begotten by him. In this way we know that we love the children of God when we love God and obey his commandments. For the love of God is this, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome,

for whoever is begotten by God conquers the world. And the victory that conquers the world is our faith. Who indeed is the victor over the world but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? This is the one who came through water and blood, Jesus Christ, not by water alone, but by water and blood. The Spirit is the one that testifies, and the Spirit is truth.

THE ORDER OF MASS

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION | JOHN 20:29

GOSPEL | JOHN 20:19-31 On the evening of that first day of the week, when the doors were locked, where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be with you.” When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.” Thomas, called Didymus, one of the Twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples said to him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands and put my finger into the nailmarks

and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.” Now a week later his disciples were again inside and Thomas was with them. Jesus came, although the doors were locked, and stood in their midst and said, “Peace be with you.” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and see my hands, and bring your hand and put it into my side, and do not be unbelieving, but believe.” Thomas answered and said to him, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus said to him, “Have you come to believe because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.” Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples that are not written in this book. But these are written that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that through this belief you may have life in his name.

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

You believe in me, Thomas, because you have seen me, says the Lord; Blessed are those who have not seen me, but still believe!

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven,

(bow at the following bolder words) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

GREAT AMEN

AGNUS DEI / LAMB OF GOD

COMMUNION HYMN | O SONS AND DAUGHTERS

1. O sons and daughters, let us sing! The King of heav'n the glorious King, O'er death today rose triumphing. Alleluia! 2. That Easter morn, at break of day, the faithful women went their way to seek the tomb where Jesus lay. Alleluia! 3. An angel clad in white they see, who sat and spoke unto the three, “Your Lord has gone to Galilee.” Alleluia! 4. That night the apostles met in fear; amidst them came their Lord most dear, and said, “my peace be on all here.” Alleluia! 5. When Thomas first the tidings heard, how they had seen the risen Lord, he doubted the disciples' word. Alleluia! 6. “My wounded side, O Thomas, see; behold my hands, my feet,” said he, “Not faithless but believing be.” Alleluia! 7. No longer Thomas then denied, he saw the feet, the hands, the side; “You are my Lord and God,” he cried. Alleluia! 8. How blest are they who have not seen, and yet whose faith has constant been, for they eternal life shall win. Alleluia! 9. On this most holy day of days, to God your hearts and voices raise, in laud, and jubilee and praise. Alleluia!

Throughout the season of Easter, we hear the Acts of the Apostles proclaimed at Mass. What are the core beliefs that the Apostles passed along to the Church and that we still profess today? To find out, follow Fr. Alek’s monthly “Wine, Cheese, and the Creed”

series. You can catch it on the Livestream from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. on the First Thursday of the month. If you missed any sessions, they are available on our Parish of St. Raphael YouTube channel or via the link on our parish website. As we hear the proclamation of the Resurrection throughout this Easter Season, it’s a great time to gain a deeper understanding of our beliefs so we can

grow as disciples of Jesus Christ and share the Good News with others!

Registration will be limited and masking and social distancing will be observed. Depending on the response, we may open a second group on Thursday evenings in the same location. There is no charge. Please contact Laura at 412-857-5356 or [email protected] to register or for additional information.

On this Divine Mercy Sunday, please remember in prayer all who are struggling, doubting, suffering, and grieving in our parish, our community, our country, and our world. Consider taking some time to contemplate the words our Risen Lord revealed to Saint Faustina that she shared in Diary: Divine Mercy in My Soul. “May we proclaim that mercy is the greatest attribute of God. All the works of My hands are crowned with mercy.” (No. 301)

“You always console Me when you pray for sinners. The prayer most pleasing to Me is prayer for the conversion of sinners.” (No. 1397)

“There is no way to heaven except the way of the cross. I followed it first. You must learn that it is the shortest and surest way.” (No. 1487)

“My child, know that the greatest obstacles to holiness are discouragement and an exaggerated anxiety. These will deprive you of the ability to practice virtue. You should not become discouraged, but strive to make My love reign in place of your self-love. Have confidence, My child. Do not lose heart in coming for pardon, for I am always ready to forgive you.” (No. 1488)

“My child, life on earth is a struggle indeed; a great struggle for My kingdom. But fear not, because you are not alone. I am always supporting you, so lean on Me as you struggle, fearing nothing.” (No. 1488)

“Speak, My beloved child, for I am always listening. I wait for you. What do you desire to say?” (No. 1489)

“Be always merciful as I am merciful. Love everyone out of love for Me, even your greatest enemies, so that My mercy may be fully reflected in your heart.” (No. 1695)

CLASSROOM CHRONICLES Each week we will highlight the amazing things that are going on in our classrooms here at St. Margaret of Scotland School.

MRS. JACLYN WALSH – 4TH GRADE:

4th Grade students had a busy start to Spring! We celebrated St. Patrick’s Day by completing a whole day of challenging

activities: graphing in Math, created Leprechaun traps along with a writing prompt, and completed a shamrock craft for

the "Blessed Trinity". “March Madness” Math was an exciting day for students! Instead of basketball teams, the kids completed a bracket of mixed multiplication and division problems! Students are now learning how to find equivalent fractions by using their multiplication and division skills. In Language Arts, 4th Grade students began a unit on “Puzzles and Mysteries'', which included a lesson on mysterious famous monsters. Students learned that not only the United States have myths and legends such as “Bigfoot”, but other countries around the world have legends of mysterious creatures like the Loch Ness Monster.

LIVING STATIONS OF THE CROSS Our Middle School and 5th Grade students did a fantastic job in presenting the Living Stations of the Cross for our Parish and School community on Friday, March 26, 2021 in Church. Special Thanks to Miss Gerrity, Miss Ianachione, Mrs. Iacchetti and Béla Pater for preparing our students for this prayer service.

ST. RAPHAEL THE ARCHANGEL

An assignment for Faith Formation students in grades K - 8 was to draw a picture or write an advertisement promoting our newly merged Parish of St. Raphael the Archangel. Here is some of the children’s work. Thanks for a good job!

Nina Buckley Our new parish, St. Raphael the Archangel, needs to continue the work of Jesus because before he ascended to Heaven he asked the apostles to baptize all nations. As time passed, we have become the apostles who have been asked to go out and do his work. We do this by being kind to others, helping others who are less fortunate, praying, and coming together at Mass. Joining the parishes together will help to make the community stronger in following out this mission because now we can all work together for the same purpose.
