1700+INTERNATIONAL
STUDENTS + SCHOLARS
International student ministry is a practical way we can fulfill the Great Commission by sharing Jesus with students and then equipping them to return home as missionaries to their own people groups. God is moving in incredible ways through this special ministry. Here are a few stories:
200+COUNTRIES
Did you know that there are over 1700 international students and scholars studying less than a mile from our church?
These students and scholars come from over 200 countries, many of which are closed to the Gospel.
They are some of the brightest, most influential future leaders of their countries. Imagine if these students encounter Jesus while they are in America. They could return home not only with an academic degree, but with a passion for the Lord that could spread to the ends of the earth!
80%NEVER ENTER AN AMERICAN HOME
80% of international students studying in America never step foot in an American home. You can help change this statistic by signing up to be a host family. A mandatory training will be held at UABC on August 20th from 1-2:30PM.
Be a part of a welcome team that greets and serves students as they arrive
Serve a free meal to 200+ students the first Thursday of each month
Meet with a student regularly as an English conversation partner
Welcome students into your home for meals and holidays as a host family
Many international students who are not Christians will visit UABC because they are interested in learning about American culture. If you see a visitor on Sunday morning, be sure to greet them with a friendly smile and introduce yourself to them! This may be the first time they have ever stepped foot into a Christian church.
The chances of a Japanese person coming to Christ outside of Japan are 30x greater than if they were to stay in their country.
UNFINISHED STORIES
Lining, a PhD student from China, came to know Christ within a few months of being in Hawaii. Four years later, he has brought countless others to faith in Jesus and plans to return to China to spread God’s word.
LININGCHINA
AMALIRAN
Amal, a Muslim student from Iran, came to faith in Jesus despite the persecution he could face if anyone in his country ever found out. Before coming to Hawaii, he was never allowed to even touch a Bible, yet in America he has complete freedom to learn about God and to tell others about Him.
Sody, a believer from Zambia, received his phD in Hawaii and returned home several years ago. He says that now all of the village people want to listen to every word he says because he studied in America. His influence in his country has multiplied and others are coming to know Christ.
SODYZAMBIA
Many other stories are unfinished. There are students literally at our doorstep who still do not know Jesus. Students from China, Japan, Indonesia, Iraq, Africa, Spain…God has brought the world to us. Let’s make the most of this opportunity to make disciples among the nations!
UABC is in a strategic location and we have the resources it takes to welcome internationals into our oikos. We can put the love of Christ into action by meeting the physical needs of international students. Their greatest needs are: friendship, language and transportation. There are many ways you and your family can be involved in helping to meet these needs. For more information, contact Meredith Palicte or visit universityavenuebaptist.org/internationals.
