RESIDENT NEWS

Wednesday, 17th July 2019 we said goodbye to a dear friend, a long standing Resident of Log-wood Village, Jimmy Luesley. Jimmy was resident at Logwood since 2003. At the ripe age of 71 we bid him farewell. Jimmy was someone who spoke his mind, always asking for a lighter (when he used to smoke…….), watches from Michelle Voges, he loved watch-es, and if he didn't have at least 6 or more calendars in his room he wasn't happy. Pratley (as he called it) to put these calendars on his wall...... The list is endless. Jimmy had his moments with many a Resident but he was a dear soul. Always polite to staff members in the office. He made a couple of wedding proposals to some of us lol, but that was Jimmy's sense of humour. He had a great sense of humour. We will miss you Jimbo. May you rest in peace and know that you will always be in our thoughts. A memorial service will be held for Jimmy on Friday, 26 July 2019 in the Logwood Hall. Time to be confirmed. Anyone is welcome to attend.

STAFF NEWS

Nonhlanhla Nxumalo, our Enrolled Nurse for the past 7 years left the employee of Logwood at the end of May to spread her wings. She will be attending a 2 year course at the Clinix Health Academy. We wish her all the best and know that you is going to make a success of her career. The empathy that she showed towards the Residents and her determination to give them the best possible care, will always be remembered. Please don’t be a stranger to Logwood and once you have qualified, come and brag a little. We know you can do it!

BEANIES, BEANIES, ORDER A LOGWOOD BEANIE!

Chantal de Peers approached the office and requested that she start making beanies and sell them to gen-erate some sort of income Logwood. Chantal has already sold 6 of her beanies to her fellow Residents and staff, and they are very happy with her handy work. If you would like to order a beanie contact Dawn on [email protected] and your request will be forward-ed to Chantal. Choose a colour of your choice, Chantal loves working with different colours. Beanies are going for R50 each.

MANDELA DAY BLANKET DRIVE

Logwood Residents have dropped off their squares (for pro-cessing). Thank you to KO Bazaars Krugersdorp, who are in-volved in this initiative, as a drop-off point for the

Mandela Day Blanket Drive. Our Residents worked many hours in completing these squares.

We are sooooo proud of them all!

insulation, colourful furniture, benches, water features etc. The brick should weigh approximately 400g on completion and it can bear the weight of a person without indentation. It is our intention once we have sufficient bricks to build some furniture to put in our eco friendly Sensory Garden which is presently under construction next to the vegetable gardens. We invite you all, when you come to Logwood to take a stroll and see the ‘Work in progress” Sensory Garden. The “Hundreds for Logwood” campaign has not gotten off the ground as anticipated with 5 staff members and 5 parents contributing to the fund. We will continue to campaign for this small monthly donation at events and social media.

Kind regards Jean

ROYAL JOHANNESBURG AND KENSINGTON GOLF COURSE—THANK YOU

The Royal JHB and Kensington Golf Course have their annual Festival of Gold tournament and each year the proceeds go to three charities i.e. Cup Cakes of Hope, Els for Autism and Logwood Village. A Huge big Thank you goes out to Mr. Christopher Bentley for the wonderful donation of R20 000-00. Thank you to everyone at the golf course, the staff, the golfers that participated in this Festival and everyone that was involved with all the arrange-ments on the day. We at Logwood appreciate what you do. We would also like to mention Mrs. Sue van der Riet, who is a member at the Royal JHB and Kensington Golf Course. Thank you Sue. We appreciate your involvement to secure this donation for us every year.

VOLUNTEERS DAY—bearing the fruits

As with everything in life, Rome was not built in a day. Our Volunteers Day that happens annually was attended by a great group of Family members, Parents, Volunteers that arrived with Parents and Logwood Staff Members. Below are pictures of our vegetable garden that our Volun-teers helped us with on Volunteers Day. Hard word, manual labour and a hot sun, was the order of the day. Our garden is slowly but surely starting to take shape and all our Volun-teers that worked on it can be proud to have been part of this project. Thanks to everyone. This couldn't have happened without your hard work and dedication.

GRANNY B’s—THANK YOU

As mentioned before Granny B’s is supplying Logwood Village Resi-dents with work by way of packing stencils into packets. Not only has this been a great project for some of our Residents, they have taken it a step further and they are do-nating all sorts to Logwood. Wayne, who works for Granny B’s, has assisted Residents in painting a table with stencils. If you follow our Face Book page you would have seen Granny B’s assisting Residents to each paint their own place mat. They also donated paint and stencils to Logwood so that we could paint number on our Floor hockey pull-overs. We are so grateful for the work and appreciate all the art donations that the Residents love doing.

LIQUID MOVERS

Liquid Movers is challenging all Parents/Siblings/Guardians and Companies to assist Logwood Vil-lage in any way possible. Not only for the Mandela Day initiative but throughout the year. As mainte-nance is an ongoing project we welcome you volunteering your time and service and any donations.

Liquid Movers is assisting Logwood in starting a long overdue dream, and that is to create a sensory garden on our proper-ty. This garden is not a money absorbing project as we aim to use recycled and second hand material wherever possible. We have a Horticulturist, Sue Frye, assisting with the design and layout of the garden. We managed to get a water fea-ture donated thanks to Roeleen Cronje, and this will be the centre part of our garden. Plants and trees were also donat-ed for this project.

Liquid Movers have done so much already. They supplied boxes in which we will be planting flowers. They arranged for our swing to get new chains and seats. The whole Liquid Movers Team is assisting with this initiative and this they are doing as part of the Mandela Day initiative.

Thank you Cliff and Gail Topper for all you do. We appreciate everything you do for Logwood and we appreciate your team at Liquid Movers. There isn't an opportunity that goes by that Liquid Movers don’t support. So Thank you to everyone!

LIQUID MOVERS

With permission from Gail Topper at Liquid Movers, I have copied their Facebook ad pertaining to the Mandela Day initi-ative. Although we are posting this a little late, it doesn't stop you from getting involved, donating something for the gar-den, give of your time and help us grow this garden together. This will be a work in progress, we know, but its going to be worth every minute spent on creating this garden in the long run.

Sensory Garden for Individuals with Disabilities

To mark Mandela Day 2019, Liquid Movers is excited to be assisting Logwood Village with the start of their Sensory Gar-den project.

One way we're preparing for this project, is by building Eco Bricks that will be used to construct pathways, walls and benches. Our aim is to do our bit in helping people whilst saving the environment.

We're calling on all companies and individuals that would like to collaborate with us on this initiative by either donating time, skill or monetarily to contact us on 011 708 0600 or [email protected].

“EMBRACE OUR WORLD” RECYCLING

Logwood Villagers are going green……

Logwood Village ‘Embracing People Embracing Life’ is now ‘Embracing our World’ to minimise the effect that waste is having on our environment.

We have done some in-depth investigation and have had meetings with various recycling companies to see how ex-actly one goes about running a programme like this. This initiative was also suggested by some of our parents and we appreciate your input.

This process is not only going to teach our Residents how to save our planet, but its also going to give them a chance to be hands-on, and reap the benefit of being part of making a change in our environment. This programme also allows them to be outside and not stuck indoors all day.

We have started recycling our own waste and have thus far done an amazing job.

A request to all Parents to join us in this venture, bring us your waste, separate it into the various categories and Log-wood will do the rest. We will have a drop-off point close to our main entrance gate which will be marked appropri-ately and all you do is drop it off.

And this is not where the buck stops……..

One Planet, One Dream, lets go green together

“Turning Plastic pollution into Plastic solutions”

We were introduced to the concept of Eco bricks which en-tails filling 2L cooldrink bottles with non-biodegradable waste and once filled, and we have enough bottles, we will be making benches or the like, out of this. This is a journey that we are really looking forward to as we can become very creative and our Residents will be part of the creations.

We urge you all to join the “Embracing our World Recycling” Programme and become part of the solution to save our environment

EMBRACE OUR WORLD RECYCLING

We are very excited to let you know that this new venture has picked up some speed since the last time we wrote about it. We have 3 clients al-ready and the collection of their recyclable materials has gone very well. We are starting off small to ensure we are getting the process right. All the non degradable materials are being sent to our bottom workshop where we have Residents building eco bricks for our Sensory Garden.

Unity College, who visits us on a weekly basis, also jumped in and joined in the fun of making eco bricks. Watch this space, as our Residents are playing a vital role in assisting to save our environment.

We will be placing a recycling bag near the main gate to make your drop-ping off of your recycling materials easier. So Parents, lets all start being part of saving the environment and bring us your materials. No need to sort the material, we will do that for you.
