million refugees. Their leader used sarin gas which nearly brought direct U.S. involvement…..peace talks scheduled for January 2014

4. Supreme Court redefines marriage – SCOTUS struck down the federal law that defined marriage as between a man and a woman, clearing the way for gay marriage in the U.S. …. Currently 12 states allow gay marriage

3. The Snowden Leaks – NSA-contractor Edward Snowden detailed the NSA’s program of bulk data collection of Americans’ phone and internet records, but soon exposed U.S. spying against allies and other targets abroad….. Considered most important leak of classified intelligence ever.

2. Boston Marathon Bombing – The Tsarnaev brothers’ bombing killed 3 and injured 264. It led to one of the most public man hunts in history, eventually killing one and arresting the other. Dzhokhar, who has since been in solitary confinement, will face trial in 2014.

1. Federal Government Shut Down - Unable to reach an agreement on federal spending levels, Congress was forced to shut down the government. After 16 days, a short-term deal was reached…… In total, the shut down cost $24 billion
