Immigration

Visitors to Bali must possess a passport valid for at least six months upon arrival and proof of onward passage. Visa requirements are determined by nationality. Visitors are advised to check with their nearest Indonesia embassy or consulate or have a look at http://www.imigrasi.go.id/index.php/en/.

Internet

Internet connection is available in all areas of the villa but the speed might not be what you have expected like in more developed areas in Bali and it might not always be good because we are located in a beach village close to the West Bali National Park.

Electricity and Voltage

Electricity is quite a luxury for some areas in Indonesia due to the dissimilar distribution especially in the rural areas and the price is not that much cheaper compared to Europe. However, the thing that we concern the most is the carbon emission produced by the power plant as the more we use the electricty the more carbon emission produced Therefore, we strongly suggest you to use all electronic devices wisely including switching off the airconditioning when you are not in the room and plug out your device chargers from the socket after using it.

Philosophically speaking, the making and giving of banten is a selfless act; a kind of self-sacrifice. It is part-meditation, part-escape from the humdrum buzz of everyday life; it's a gift of gratitude to the Maker, and a supplication to the lower spirits that they do not disturb the living. The smoke of the incense carries the sari - the essence of an offering - to heaven.

8. Banyuwangi Trip : Ijen Crater and Mount Bromo - Ijen Crater

Ijen crater, the magnificent colourful sulphur lake is in the Banyuwangi Regency and is 55 kilometer from the villa. The ground is very fertile and a group of big plantations such as cacao, teakwood, rubber and both Arabica and Robusta coffee are covering more than 50% of the area of Banyuwangi. The amazing view of Ijen Crater in the early morning is perfect when the sun is rising. Yet the night trip is since 2010 popular which is so called “Blue Fire”, the only one place in the world. Tour operator will advise to go after middle of the night so then you can see both: the blue fire and the sunrise. The view of sulphur miners who climb and go down to the crater is also amazing. A man puts about 10 kg of yellowish stone in to his basket, before he descends the mountain slope to sell his load, carrying the same basket, going in the same direction, digging the same mineral. It is the natural picture that can be seen every day. The weather in the night is pretty chill, we advise you to bring jacket/sweater and of course proper shoes. You will need to climb about 3km. Please ask our staff to prepare your breakfast for take-away to Ijen. Make sure the battery in your camera is full.

- Mount Bromo

Mount Bromo is one of the iconic mountain in Indonesia, 2329 m high. This breath-taking and ethereal landscape have been swooned by many travellers alike. Myth has it that Mount Bromo is significant to the Tengger people who believe that the site is where their brave prince sacrificed his life for his family. To appease the Gods, the people will offer food and money by throwing it into the crater of the volcano once a year during annual Kasada (or Kasodo) festival. The best time to go is in June, July and August where is less rain but more tourists. August is the month for the Kesada (Kesodo festival) for the Tengger people if you are interested. However, Indonesia being a faily mind weather of just rain and shine, anytime is a good time to go to Mount Bromo. Try to avoid weekends if you do not want the crowd.

Dos and Donts

Entering a temple

DO wear some Sarong or long clothes when entering a temple – The Balinese are very serious about their spirituality, so please be respectful.

DON'T enter a temple menstruating – also if you have an open wound you shouldn’t enter.

Shopping

DO haggle in markets and street shops - Humor and a smile can get you a long way, that goes for bargaining too.

DON'T haggle too hard or for the fun of it - Be polite. 5000 rupiahs probably won’t make much of a difference to you, but it might do to the seller.

Mind the head

DO wear a helmet when driving a scooter – Both for protection and to avoid getting stopped by the police. Insider tip: Wearing an “udeng” (The traditional Balinese headwear) exempt you from wearing a helmet

DON'T touch people’s heads – That goes for kids too, even if they are cute. The head is considered the most sacred part of the human body.

Drinking water

DO drink bottled water - Bali is hot all year around and you don’t want to dehydrate.

DON'T drink tap water - It does not taste good and will almost certainly give you stomach problems.

When giving and receiving

DO use both hands when giving or receiving - It is a compliment to use both hands when you give or receive things like money or a business card.

DON'T hand over something with your left hand – It is considered impolite. Using both hands is still ok.

When driving

DO honk the horn shortly when overtaking - It is a common way to let other people know you are passing.

DON'T hold the horn down – Being aggressive in the traffic is frowned upon everywhere, even more so in Bali.

Getting attention

DO wave with your palm facing down - When asking someone to come by, stretch your hand out, palm down and move your fingers toward yourself.

DON'T point with your index finger - That is considered offensive. Use the entire hand if you want to point out something.

When invited to dinner

DO make room for a second serving – you will most likely be asked for one and it will be impolite to reject.

DON'T empty your plate – Leave a little food as an offering to the gods and to let the host know you had enough to eat.
