WELCOMECELEBRATING 125 YEARS OF RAIL IN WYCHEPROOF

Welcome to the inaugural ‘Steaming up Broadway’ festival and to a weekend celebrating the tapestry of Wycheproof ’s rich history and modern Mallee lifestyle.

Rail has always been an important part of Wycheproof ’s history. In October 1883 the rail line became an essential link to the outside world, transporting the harvest out and bringing much needed equipment and supplies into the isolated community. 125 years later the rail line is still vital to our vibrant community with the region transporting 60% of Victoria’s grain harvest to the rest of the world.

Wycheproof is an enthusiastic and committed community embracing the challenges the long drought has brought. Despite these trying times, some things never change such as the heart of ‘Wycheproofians’ and the genuine country hospitality.

In 2007 a spark of an idea to honour our rail workers and re-live the days of steam locomotives running up the main street of Wycheproof was developed under

the Buloke Shire Council – Hobsons Bay City Council Friendship Alliance. Bringing a steam train this far from home is much easier said than done and we are indebted to the vision and support shown by both councils and Steamrail Victoria in the development of this project.

Celebrating in style the Steaming up Broadway Festival has events to suit everyone in the family from history and trains, free rides and show bags to the delights of the Wycheproof Living Market and Expo and the magic of Music on the Mount on the world’s smallest registered mountain – Mt Wycheproof.

I sincerely hope you enjoy your slice of rural living Wycheproof style this weekend and visit again in the near future or perhaps we can tempt you to be part of our community each and every day! Stay for a day or for always – the Wycheproof welcome is always there for you.

Paddock 2 Port Presented by Laverton Traders Association and Laverton Bendigo Community Bank The Paddock 2 Port Photographic Essay is a joint ‘Friendship Alliance’ project presented by the Buloke Shire and Hobsons Bay City Councils. Literally from the paddocks to the ports the exhibition depicts the pre-1938 journey of wool and wheat from the Wimmera/Mallee to the ports of Williamstown where the agricultural product of young Australia was then shipped across the world. Most of the framed ‘paddock’ photos have been sourced from historic societies in the Buloke Shire and many depict scenes from Wycheproof and district. Originally launched in Williamstown in April 2008, Paddock 2 Port will be on display in Wycheproof until early November before travelling to other Buloke towns.

Transported Back Selected from a collection of more than half a million photos, this photographic exhibition offers a rare glimpse into Victorian life of the 1800’s. The extraordinary rich exhibit provides a vivid snapshot of Victoria’s history via a collection of photos produced over a 150 year period by the State’s transport authorities. The collection has more recently been inherited by the Public Record Office of Victoria and we are delighted to showcase it over an extended period until early November.

The staggering collection of photos is not just a record of railway stations, locomotives and signal boxes but also a rich and vivid record of people, places, floods and fires, and depicts historic landmark occasions, buildings, street scenes, ladies fashion and important documents.
