History: The Gator Chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists, formerly known as the Association of Black Communicators, was founded in 1980 as the first minority organization in the University of Florida’s College of Journalism and Communications. The name was changed in 2012 to reflect its relationship with the National Association of Black Journalists, the professional parent organization. In its 32 years of excellence, it has promoted and encouraged journalism and communications as a career for students while gaining operational support from the college’s Knight Division.

Gator Chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists First General Body Meeting September 5, 2012 Mission Statement: To create a strong union among students of color who are pursuing careers in journalism, public relations, telecommunications and advertising at the University of Florida. History: The Gator Chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists, formerly known as the Association of Black Communicators, was founded in 1980 as the first minority organization in the University of Floridas College of Journalism and Communications. The name was changed in 2012 to reflect its relationship with the National Association of Black Journalists, the professional parent organization. In its 32 years of excellence, it has promoted and encouraged journalism and communications as a career for students while gaining operational support from the colleges Knight Division. Meet Our E-board members President: Nickelle Smith Major: Telecommunications Year: Junior Future Aspirations: To become a television news reporter or anchor. She also plans to start a nonprofit for young girls. Vice President: Vonecia Carswell Major: Journalism Year: Senior Future Aspirations: To become a multimedia editor. Treasurer: Shaneece Dixon Major: Journalism Year: Senior Future Aspirations: To write local nonprofit news. Secretary: Meghan Pryce Major: Journalism Year: Sophomore Future Aspirations: To write for a womens magazine. Historian: Tatila Brock Major: Journalism Year: Junior Future Aspiration: To work for nonprofit organization or work for seventeen magazine. ITS ICE BREAKER TIME! Instructions: This is a ball. There are questions on this ball. When you get this ball rip off the question and answer it. NO hitting each other with the ball. TREASURER UPDATE Balance: $ Dues will be $15. Cost of T-Shirts: $10. Please bring in money for dues and t-shirts by September 19th. Goal: $1, ,000. FUNDRAISING To raise money for the organization, UF NABJ works the concession stands at school for football games, basketball games and more. Its a lot of fun and great bonding time. This semester we will be working every Gator football home game at the Hawker Stands. We have a partnership with the Hispanic Communicators Association (HCA). Six people are needed to work the concession stands. UFNABJ is responsible for providing three members and then we split the profits with HCA. We will be providing the hats and shirts. All you need to do is wear closed toe shoes! The money we make from concessions go towards food for meetings, additional costs for t-shirts and sponsoring active members to go to the convention. Dates for concession stands are: 9/22, 10/6, 10/20, 11/3, 11/10, 11/17. If you are interested in helping us fundraise for any of these dates, please contact Shaneece Dixon at CHARLES HARRIS The Knight Division for Scholarship, Career Services and Multicultural Affairs Mr. Harris, faculty advisor for UF NABJ Updates from Mr. Harris: UF Alumni Association is having a celebration October for the first black student at UF. The Knight Division also works with the undergraduate scholarship program. The application will be available on November 1st and the deadline is in February. Interviewing day is October 9th in the Reitz Union Grand Ballroom. Register at:on twitter to receive information about club meetings and opportunities within the college. If you need to speak with Mr. Harris just stop by his office in the Knight Division. WHAT IS NABJ? The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) is a professional organization comprised of journalists, students and media related professionals. Founded by 44 men and women on December 12, 1975, in Washington, D.C., NABJ is the largest organization of journalists of color in the nation. Student Membership costs $40. Membership Benefits include discounts on the convention registration fee, scholarship and internship opportunities, NABJ awards, and an online job matching service. Scholarships and Projects: Each year NABJ awards about $100,000 in scholarships and internships to college and high school students nationwide, as well as fellowships for seasoned professionals. NABJ CONVENTION Last year the NABJ Convention took place in New Orleans. NABJ 2013 (July 31 - Aug.4). This year the convention will be at Gaylord Palms Convention Center & Resort in Orlando, FL. The cost is not listed yet, but last year it was $225 for the early bird special. Speakers are not listed yet, but they will be taking proposals for workshops soon. A PLUS PROGRAM We at UFNABJ feel that it is important to give back to our community. UF NABJ volunteers with the A Plus Program at Williston High School. It is a free college and career readiness program for students in grades 8 through 12. In the past we have done seminars about professionalism, networking, and tips for starting college ranging from dorm life to college prep. This semester we plan on continuing to volunteer with A Plus. Information about dates and how to sign up will be announced soon. ZION Zion is our monthly online magazine. Editor and Chief: Vonecia Committee Heads: Nickelle - Telecom, Shaneece - Journalism, Vonecia and Tia- Public Relations/Advertising Telecom Committee: Responsible for video packages, vlogs and producing commercials. Journalism Committee: Responsible for writing feature, reporting, editorial and photography stories. PR/Advertising Committee: Responsible for PR/Advertising for the organization, the layout/design, designing the cover of the magazine, polls, graphics, promotional videos, flyers and social media. All articles/projects will be due the second meeting of every month. The next meeting (September 19th) we will start meeting in committees. It does not matter what major you are, members can jump around committees. This is an opportunity for our members to gain experience in the media industry and to try something new. UPCOMING EVENTS Socials: September 20th - Game Night Mixer November 15th - Thanksgiving Potluck December 6th - End of the Semester Christmas Social We plan on hosting workshops for Final Cut Pro, the editing test and news test. We will be having an UFNABJ Week sometime this semester. HOT TOPICS At the end of every meeting, we discuss interesting topics circulating in the media.
