Graziano who has helped here at Visitation for over the last year. He has graciously been available for weekend Masses, weekday Masses, confessions, funerals, bereave-ment calls and whatever our needs at Visitation were at the moment. He was Fr. Huggins right hand many times throughout the year and was available when Fr. Scott was not. Thank you Fr. Damien for all your time and inspira-tional homilies. You will be missed.

Also, sadly we say good-bye to our retired priests who have assisted Father Scott at Visitation’s weekend masses. Fr. Tivy will be assisting at St. Isaac Jogues in Hinsdale and Fr. Sularz will be helping Fr. Huggins at his new as-signment at St. Elizabeth Seton in Naperville. We have appreciated having their help during the last six years and will miss their inspiring homilies. They truly have been a blessing to Visitation Church.

13th Sunday in Ordinary Time Reflection

We all have our disappointments in life. They can range from the inconsequential (the store is out of the brand of laundry soap that I have a coupon for) to the very signifi-cant (a diagnosis of cancer or another serious illness). And we all deal with disappointments in different ways. Young children are very good at “catastrophizing” a disappoint-ment. Mom’s refusal to get that wanted candy bar in the grocery checkout line can lead to a tantrum. But as any mother knows, not giving in to a child’s tantrum is teach-ing a lesson on how to deal with the inevitable disappoint-ments that are part of each person’s life.

In this weekend’s Gospel, James and John certainly weren’t happy that a Samaritan village was not very wel-coming to Jesus and his band of disciples. Recall that Sa-maritans believed that the place to worship God was on Mt. Gerizim, and because Jesus and his disciples were on the way to Jerusalem, the Samaritans were not interested in aiding his mission. Almost like five-year-olds at the candy display in the grocery checkout line, James and John were ready to call down fire from heaven to wipe out the Samar-itans. Jesus did not hesitate to rebuke them for their out-burst. On the other hand, even Jesus seemed to express his own sense of disappointment when he says in the Gospel to someone who wants to follow him, “The Son of Man has nowhere to rest his head” (Lk 9:58).

How we deal with disappointment is a sign of maturity. Jesus makes the point in the Gospel that we have to move forward. Letting go of regrets and looking to the future is wholesome everyday advice. But putting those ideas into the realm of faith means that we confess our sins and seek absolution (the letting go) and direct our lives to God’s kingdom. It is looking toward our ultimate future, which is eternal life in heaven.

The History and Development of the Mass (June 26, 2016)

In our journey through the history of the mass, last week we began to cover the two references to the Eucha-rist found in Justin Martyr’s First Apology, written circa 150 AD. In the first reference he seems to focus in on the celebration of what we today would call the Easter Vigil, when adult converts were baptized, confirmed, and given their first Eucharist, all in one ceremony. Last week we ended with Justin’s second reference, which focuses in on the regular Sunday celebration of the Eucharist: “On the day called Sunday, all who live in cities or in the country gather together to one place, and the memoirs of the apostles or the writings of the prophets are read, as long as time permits; then the presider verbally in-structs, and exhorts to the imitation of these good things. Then we all rise together and pray, and when our prayer is ended, bread and wine and water are brought, and the presider in like manner offers prayers and thanksgivings, according to his ability, and the people assent, saying ‘Amen’; and there is a distribution to each, and to those who are absent a portion is sent by the deacons. And they who are well to do, and willing, give what each thinks fit; and what is collected is depos-ited with the presider, who succors the orphans and wid-ows and those who are in want, and in a word takes care of all who are in need. Sunday is the day on which we all hold our common assembly, because it is the first day on which God, having wrought a change in the darkness and matter, made the world; and Jesus Christ our Savior on the same day rose from the dead.”

Notice how already at this early date so many of the ele-ments of the mass are in place. The Liturgy of the Word con-sists of a reading from “the prophets” (Old Testament), a reading from “the memoirs of the apostles” (New Testa-ment), a “verbal instruction and exhortation by the presider (Homily), and then the General Intercessions (“all rise to-gether and pray”). The Liturgy of the Eucharist consists of the bread and wine being brought to the presider (the Prep-aration of the Gifts) who “offers prayers and thanksgiving according to his ability” (Eucharistic Prayer). The people give their assent to the Eucharistic Prayer by saying “Amen”, and then the deacons distribute communion to those present and those absent. Justin even mentions that a collection was taken for the care of those in need.

Let’s turn now to bishop Irenaeus of Lyons (in modern France), who referred to the Eucharist circa 190 AD in his famous treatise Against Heresies: “But vain are they who despise the entire dispensation of God, and disallow

the salvation of the flesh, and treat with contempt its regeneration, maintaining that it is not capable of incor-ruption. But if this indeed does not attain salvation, then neither did the Lord redeem us with His blood, nor is the cup of the Eucharist the communion of His blood, nor the bread which we break the communion of His body. He has acknowledged the cup as His own blood, from which He blesses our blood; and the bread He has es-tablished as His own body, from which He gives increase to our bodies. When, therefore, the mingled cup and the manufactured bread receives the Word of God, and the Eucharist of the blood and the body of Christ is made, from which things the substance of our flesh is in-creased and supported, how can they affirm that the flesh is incapable of receiving the gift of God, which is life eternal, which is nourished from the body and blood of the Lord, and is a member of Him?”

While Irenaeus does not describe the ritual of the Eu-charist in his day, he does provide insight into how the Church understood the meaning of the Eucharist. Irenae-us wrote against a variety of related theological heresies, but he especially sought to refute the heresy of Gnosti-cism. This very popular movement combined elements from Greek philosophy and other eastern religions, and one of its main tenets was the rejection of the notion that the infinite God could ever truly take on material flesh and be immersed in the messiness of the ordinary world. Gnostics tended to “spiritualize” the Good News and reject one of the central mysteries of the Christian faith, the Incarnation. This spilled over into their under-standing of the Eucharist, which they interpreted in a symbolic, rather than sacramental, way. Irenaeus em-phasizes that not only does the catholic faith affirm that the eternal Word of God became truly human, but that the Eucharist is truly the body and blood of Jesus Christ.

We turn now to a writing known as the Apostolic Tradi-tion, attributed to Hippolytus, a presbyter of the church of Rome, circa 200 AD. This text provides us with the ear-liest example of a full Eucharistic prayer. It begins: “Then the deacons shall present the oblation to the bishop, and he shall lay his hand upon it, and give thanks, with the entire council of elders, saying: ‘The Lord be with you.’ And all reply: ‘And with your spirit.’ The bishop says: ‘Lift up your hearts.’ The people respond: ‘We lift them up the Lord.’ The bishop says: ‘Let us give thanks to the Lord.’ The people respond: ‘It is proper and just.’” This beginning part of the Eucharistic prayer would come to be known as the Preface Dialogue. Next week we will look at the rest of Hippolytus’ Eucharistic prayer.


SCHOOL

Help Needed hosting the Totus Tuus team! The team is coming to Visitation July 24−29, 2016

Totus Tuus is a summer youth program (like vacation Bible school) whereby teams of four college students (two male and two female) travel to various parishes throughout the diocese proclaiming the Gospel to chil-dren and teens through catechetical instruction, Mass, Confession, games, fun and more!

We need families to provide lunch or dinner for the team during the six days they are here at Visita-tion. Lunch (12:00−1:00 #.".) needs to be brought to the Parish Center. For dinner (5:15−6:30 #.".), families may bring the food to the Parish Center and join the team there, they may host them at their home, or they may take the team out to a restaurant.

This is a great way to support the Totus Tuus program and these young men and women in their journey of faith. The team members love meeting families from the parish!

Prayer Quilt Ministry The Prayer Quilt Ministry would like to encourage all

parishioners to let us know about those who are going through a significant difficulty and who may benefit from the prayers of our congregation and the tangible evidence of those prayers in the form of the prayer quilts. The recip-ients of the prayer quilts may be going through a health issue, facing surgery, be in the military (or just returned from military duty), dealing with grief, emotional con-cerns, etc. They do not have to be members of Visitation Parish or Catholic.

Anyone may offer a prayer quilt to anyone you feel might benefit and appreciate being covered by our prayers. The recipient MUST agree to accept the prayer quilt. A Memory Keepsake Did you miss Fr. Scott’s last Mass with us? Would you

like to have a recording of the Mass? The Choirs and Congregation sang with all their hearts

at the sometimes tearful, sometimes uplifting Farewell Mass with Fr. Scott Huggins who has served with us here at Visitation for six years since 2010. We had Visitation Adult Choir, Children’s Choir and members of the Youth Chorale at the Mass as well as our woodwinds. The mo-ment was captured in a recording for Fr. Two Marvelous Feasts This weekend, two marvelous feasts swaddle our Sunday

Liturgy: the Nativity of St. John the Baptist and Our Lady of Perpetual Help.

Isaiah prophesized about John the Baptist with these words, “a voice cries: In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God.” (Isaiah 40:3) John the Baptist went about preaching repentance and forgiveness, boldly speaking truth as the Holy Spirit directed him who was “filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb.” (Luke 1:15) As baptized and confirmed Catholics, we too are sent by the Holy Spirit to bring truth to a world rife with cultural rela-tivism. “You are the light of the world…Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” (Mt 5:14, 16) We each are responsible for the care of those souls whom God has placed in our path. Let us not be caught empty-handed!

We have our Blessed Lady to run to just as we see in the painting of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, a little Jesus, who, although God, ran to His mother for succor. One sandal dangles from his foot as he looks intently at an angel bearing the cross He will one day carry to His death, a death He freely chose. In His humanity, however, He found strength in the arms of His Holy Mother. Through her love, He found the strength to look squarely at that future cross.

We can run directly to Jesus and His Mother, Holy Mary, Mother of the Eucharist, by visiting the Adoration Chapel. There we can receive the graces to carry our own crosses. Strengthened, we can then become instruments of God by shedding light, peace, love, and joy to all we meet along the path to Heaven.

Year of Mercy Pilgrimage Church Hours at IC

Please Note Time Change! As part of the Jubilee Year of Mercy, Immaculate

Conception parish is one of the “Pilgrimage Churches” in the Diocese of Joliet. In celebration, we will open our I.C. Church to pilgrims from the parish and around the diocese each Saturday from 9:00 to 11:00 ".#. through November 26, 2016. Our hope is that people will take advantage of the opportunity to visit the church and pray. There is also the opportunity to ob-tain a plenary indulgence during the Year of Mercy by visiting a Pilgrimage Church with the intention of ac-quiring the indulgence, going to confession (before or after the visit), receiving Holy Communion, making a profession of faith, praying for the Holy Father and for the intentions that he bears in his heart for the good of the church and of the entire world. Perpetual Adoration Chapel The Perpetual Adoration Chapel of Our Lady, Mother of the Eucharist, is available 24 hours a day for private prayer and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, exposed on the Altar. Independence Day Prayer “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are

created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Lib-erty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

We all know these words by heart. They are from the United States Declaration of Independence. However, are these words held with the same reverence around the world as they are held here at home? Sadly, no. There are many places in the world where it is a life-threatening endeavor to practice one's faith, that faith that was given to each hu-man by that Creator who endowed us with inalienable rights.

Let us take a moment to remember all those people in the world who are not free to seek life, liberty or happiness.

Let us pray… O God, you willed that the Jewish people be free from

slavery by their Egyptian captors. You will that all people should be free to worship you

without fear and to celebrate their religious beliefs freely, even if they have not yet found you.

Grant that those of us who live in this great nation will thank you daily for our freedom, and work for the freedom of others around the world who do not yet have the free-dom to practice their faith openly and proudly.

We seek your wisdom where hatred abounds, and ask for humility to offer our good works to others who live in fear and bondage.

We ask all this through Christ our Lord, who frees us from sin and death through the wood of the cross.

Amen.
