Welcome from the Principal
Dear parents
Thank you to everyone who attended Year 11
parents evening on Monday. It was a pleasure to talk to you about the
progress your sons and daughters are making. It was also good to hear
how many students intend to stay on in to Post 16 to take their studies to
the highest level in school. Thank you also for all your feedback on our
questionnaires - I have shared your lovely comments with the staff who I
know are very touched.
I spent Tuesday in London with the Board of Trustees discussing how we
are best supporting our students across the nine CAT schools and how
we can share best practice amongst all our staff. It is great to see so many
improvements being made in all areas and humbling to work with such
dedicated individuals from all areas of business and academic worlds.
I had a real moment of professional joy on Wednesday when I walked in
to my office to find an incredible piece of artwork on my table with a
touching message. Natalia, year 8, had done a portrait of me which was
an extraordinary likeness. I couldn't believe the talent and skill for
someone so young to have produced something so exceptional. Thank
you Natalia, I shall frame it and keep it in my office (after I have taken it
home and shown my family how amazing it is!). I share a scanned image
of it with all of you later in this newsletter.
Wednesday was also a real treat as I got to listen to and watch Whitehills
Primary School youngsters playing steel pans at KC. The youngsters have
now had two sessions with our wonderful Mrs Watts and they can already
play ' when the saints go marching in' brilliantly. I know Mr Hardcastle
would be incredibly impressed with you all too- well done to each of you
and a huge thanks to Mrs Watts for making it happen.
On Thursday KC Year 9 students were joined by some of our amazing
Year 13 Art students to help deliver the next instalment of the joint Art
project with Kingsthorpe Village Primary school. Matthew Wackett, Lousie
Calpin, Karagh Byrne and Taylor Robinson all volunteered to help the
primary school students complete a range of painted designs that will be
used for a large scale canvas. Matthew delivered the introduction to the
lesson brilliantly, giving the primary students a knowledgeable
demonstration of how to paint, carefully! Our Year 9 students, once again
were amazing and individually guided the primary students to create their
paintings.
This week was our last session at KVP, after which the primary students
come to KC to start painting what can only be described as the biggest
canvas Mr Jackson has ever made. Huge thanks to Mr Jackson as none
of this could be possible without his amazing talent and dedication.
We have a Dance show on Wednesday 16th March at 7.15 and it would
be lovely to see as many of you there as possible to support the students
who have worked incredibly hard. A huge thanks to our brilliant dance
staff, Mrs Heath and Mrs Townsend.
I have spoken to many year 6 parents this week who are looking to appeal
to get their child in to KC. There is a process to go through but if you want
to discuss this with anyone please
[email protected] and we will do our very
best to guide you.
Wishing you all a relaxing weekend.

Stars of the week
Purple House Star of the Week - Zuzanna Kowalczyk, Year 7
Zussana has made exceptional progress since coming to KC. She has
worked extremely hard since arriving with very little spoken English. She
is a supportive role model with other new EAL students and is a valued
member of the Kingsthorpe College community.
Red House Star of the Week - Ellie-Megan McInerney, Year 7
Ellie has really shown what being a student at KC is all about. She has
taken each and every opportunity that has come her way and has used
this to make a positive impact on those around her. Ellie lives College life
to the full and has represented KC on numerous occasions as part of the
female football team and has shown her commitment and dedication to
the junior girls dance club. Ellie has already achieved several aspiration
awards and we are sure that this trend will continue throughout her time at
KC. Ellie, you are a star and we are all so very proud of you.
Blue House Star of the Week - Ashante Page Year 11
Ashante is always helping out at tutor times, has shown an improvement
in attendance and is trying so hard to do her best in all her lessons. She is
a quiet student who deserves recognition for what she is doing. Keep up
the good work Ashante.
Gold House - Imogen Robinson, Year 8
Imogen has matured beyond belief during year 8 and has left issues she
faced in year 7 well and truly behind her. She is always helpful within her
tutor group and is a very deserving star of the week. Well done Imogen!
Green House - Lucia Norfolk, Year 8
Lucia was one of sixty students who submitted a poem for the national
‘Mum in a Million’ Competition. As the deadline date is not until 25th
March for all entries and judging, Ms Cockerill decided to organize a
school winner as well as treating the student to a bouquet of flowers, box
of chocolates and a card for Mother’s Day. The winning poem was judged
by the English Staff and they will be submitting approximately sixty poems
to the national competition.
Lucia’s poem:
Mum in a Million – Winning school Poem
You were the one who gave life to me,
You told me I could be what I wanted to be.
You promised you would always be there,
No matter when, no matter where.
You taught me to crawl, to walk, to speak.
Without you my life would be so very bleak.
You took me to ballet, to singing and horse riding,
You took me to football, rugby and diving.
When life was hard or happy, you’d always stay,
You sacrificed so much, for that I can never repay.
When it hurts to look back, and you’re afraid to look ahead,
I look to my side and you are there;
Just like you said.
E Safety
We would like to bring to your attention two incidents reported to us from
another local school recently. We feel it is worth sharing with you so that
you can be vigilant.
Incident 1 – a pupil on X-box Live at home was in competition with
another player who then sent the threat ‘I am going to molest you’. The
pupil had the sense to go straight to a parent and the incident has been
reported to the police and the player blocked.
Incident 2 – a parent went into their child's school on Monday having
seen their son had accessed a chat line on his phone to find a girlfriend.
The parent already has privacy settings and filters on his child’s access
but these had not been enough to block the access. The site apparently
guarantees a girlfriend once you post a naked photo of yourself online.
The parent reported this to the police who are now investigating.
Drawing by Natalia Cyrankowska-
Ciolek - Year 8
I was totally blown away by this brilliant drawing of me done by Natalia
one of our Year 8 students. This is a shining example of some of the very
talented young students we have at KC. Well done Natalia.

Book of the week: Allegiant by Veronica Roth (BL: 5.7)
To coincide with the release of the film this
week, our book of the week is Allegiant. Told
from a riveting dual perspective, best-selling
author Veronica Roth, brings the Divergent
series to a powerful conclusion while revealing
the secrets of the dystopian world that has
captivated millions of readers in Divergent and
Insurgent.
In this book we find out that Tris's new reality is
even more alarming than the one she left
behind. Old discoveries are quickly rendered
meaningless. Explosive new truths change the hearts of those she loves.
And once again, Tris must battle to comprehend the complexities of
human nature – and of herself – while facing impossible choices about
courage, allegiance, sacrifice and love.
If you love books like The Hunger Games and Twilight then this series of
books is definitely for you.
This week’s literacy challenge winner is...
Emanuel Pruteanu B1.
The word of the week is…….
“Absolute”
Definition: Complete and perfect, not mixed.
Try and use this word in a sentence this week. My sentence is,
'I spoke with absolute conviction when I made my speech'.
News
Our reading hero this week is Ellin Baldock (Year 7). This week Ellin
became our newest Accelerated Reader millionaire. Not only has she
read over one million words on the programme she has read a very
impressive 14 books and has registered five books for Read For My
School. She is currently reading the Harry Potter series and is really
enjoying these books. Well done Ellin and keep up the good work!
RFMS Competition News:
Time is running out! We only have one week left in the competition.
Students in years 7 and 8 please make sure that you have registered all
of the books that you have read since the 18th January.
So far we have read 1,827 books but we need to do a lot more work to
break last year’s total of 2,344 books read. Our aim is that each student
in the competition reads at least 10 books. Keep up the good work – the
competition finishes on the 18th March.
Use it, don’t lose it.
We have now given out the World Book Day tokens which students can
use at participating retailers to either exchange for a free World Book Day
Book or to use as £1.00 discount against any book costing £2.99 or
more. Also, all of the World Book Day books are on the Accelerated
Reader programme.
Our World book day competitions will be running until Friday 18th March,
so you still have plenty of time to enter. Please collect entry forms from
the library.
Students should also check out the World Book Day website which is
filled with resources, competitions, games, videos, ideas and inspiration to
help celebrate books and reading all year round.www.worldbookday.com
Google Translate
Google translate is now available on the KC website and is a useful tool. It
will help to improve accessibility for visitors who have limited English.
Football - KC 2 vs Duston 0
Firstly we would like to thank the spectators that made it to support this
league game on a cold evening in the rain!
End to end football, goals, scrambles in the goalmouth, crossbars rattling
– this game had it all!
Duston started the game the brighter team and looked very strong. They
kept possession really well, passing and moving from the back. After our
slow start our midfield began to push forward and were rewarded with a
couple of chances before half time.
The boys knew they were in for a tough second half, but for a long time
Duston couldn’t score. There were chances at either end and finally the
deadlock was broken with a free kick into the box by T.J. which looped
over the goal keeper. As both sides were pressing for a goal late on,
defences were getting stretched and it was Peter Earp who scored next,
slotting the ball into the bottom corner.
It was a great game to watch and the KC boys did our school proud with
their attitude and commitment.
This result will leave us 2nd in the league once the table has been
updated!!
Not bad for our first year together as manager and players!

Mr Ingram Swims for Sports Relief Thanks to tremendous support by colleagues, friends, and students so far Mr Ingram has raised nearly £300. Sports relief is an amazing event that allows you to do something that you would not normally do in aid of raising money for people who just need a little help. His challenge was to do a 5K swim in under 2.5 hours. He only learnt to swim just over two years ago so this was a mammoth task and we are pleased to say that he managed to swim the 5K in two hours 11 minutes. Mr Ingram would like to say a special thank you for all those that supported him. There is still time to donate; you can make an email pledge to him or go on the link below. http://my.sportrelief.com/sponsor/davidingram

Don’t throw out your old uniform!
If you have KC uniform that you no longer need or use and it is still in
good condition, please bring it in to school. We can use it for emergencies
and for our second hand exchange programme. Thank you!.
