Welcome, Welcome to the Autumn 2017 edition of our newsletter. As you will see, it has been a busy year! I am really pleased for the recognition given to Doreen and Jimmy for their many years devoted to the Home and what we stand for. Fundraising continues to be tough but in our Support group and other volunteers we have an amazing network of people prepared to go the extra mile for the Home – a special mention should go to Lee Osborne who went 26 extra miles to run the marathon for the Home and Anya Martin and Nicola Johnston who are half-way through doing their 365 swims in a year. Lastly, can I remind you to make sure you enter the Dream Holiday Draw by which, every month, you can win a Dream holiday worth up to £6000. Buy a monthly ticket yourself and tell your friends! Enjoy the read. Rob Shepherd Rob Shepherd, Chairman 30 A N N I V E R S A R Y 1987 1987 2017 Congratulations to Doreen Homer, who runs our shop ‘The Treasure Chest’ on the Bridge. She collected the Humble Volunteer Award in the Sure Customer Service Awards. Doreen is a stalwart supporter and has raised many thousands of pounds for the Home over the years; we all appreciate her amazing commitment to raising funds for the residents. AWARDS Jan Hayhurst We were very sad to see our Deputy Home Manager, Jan Hayhurst leave in August to return to the UK. Jan worked at the Home for nearly nine years, initially as an RGN and then as Deputy Home Manager from 2012. She was a very capable and committed member of staff who played an important role in maintaining the high standards of care in the Home. She always focused on the residents’ needs and went far beyond what might be expected of a Deputy by accompanying them not only on evenings out in her own time, but also on various holidays off-Island. We shall all miss her and wish her much happiness for the future. STAFF Mark (Jimmy) Ozanne Jimmy was nominated by an ex member of staff as Carer of the Year in this year’s Guernsey Press awards and although he didn’t get to the last three, to us he is a gem. Jim has worked at the Home for 13 years and is one of the most cheerful people you could ever meet. Not only is he a VQ Assessor for our staff he also is our stand-in chef. Nothing is too much trouble and his fundraising ideas are legendary! He’s dressed as a gorilla and chained himself to the lighthouse at the breakwater; executed a parachute jump; ran wearing an Elmo costume as part of Team Dil at the 2014 Half Marathon and completed the Channel Island Walk to name just a few. One of his more eccentric ideas is to put 1 million gnomes on North Beach and get people to pay to take photos of them. Staff joining the Home tend not to leave very often – we have one staff member celebrating her 30th anniversary and two their 20th year. Linda Cutler joined as a carer in 1997 and then changed to work as bank staff after she had her son in 2008. She is also a co-ordinator and a very experienced and valued member of staff. Linda has been involved in various fundraising events over the years, including organising, with Kelly Ogier and Cat Brown an annual Bingo Night at the L’Islet Hall offering around 100 amazing raffle prizes. Each of these events has raised around £2,000. The girls spend a frantic couple of months phoning, emailing and writing letters to possible donors asking for raffle prizes; collecting and sorting them and then setting them up on the day. Martin Campbell first came to the Home on work experience and then joined as a chef straight from catering college in 1997. He has been involved in many fundraisers over the years – even making a ‘skeleton’ from various meats and bones and laying it in a silk- lined coffin for one of our Hallowe’en Night fundraisers. He is also our in-house baker of bespoke hand-made cakes for residents’ birthdays and other special events and made the cake that appears on the front cover of our recipe book. He also owns and runs, with his partner, a custom-made cake business and the Home is its chosen charity. Alwyn Whittaker (Ollie) has been a carer at the Home since it opened its doors in 1987 and is our longest-serving staff member. She is also co-ordinator and a VQ Assessor for those staff undertaking VQ studies. She has raised money for the Home in many ways over the years, including six half marathons - during one of which where she was dressed as a toadstool (don’t ask!) she fell and cracked a rib; many of the Battles of Flowers floats, the first one being, very aptly, a Cheshire Cat. Another float Ollie was helping with was Fireman Sam and she managed to fall down the hole on top of the float and break her collar bone – resulting in six weeks off work! She’s also taken part in many boxing day swims, until she fell up the granite steps at Cobo, scraped her shin and ended up with cellulitis – meaning another six weeks off work. Needless to say she is now banned from taking part! One of her great ambitions had been to do a parachute jump and she finally achieved this in 2009. 30 G ala /guernseycheshirehome @cheshirehomegsy Guernsey Registered Charity number CH075 Guernsey Cheshire Home Choice and independence for islanders living with physical disability TICKETS £60 PER PERSON Contact: [email protected] or 07781 130683 Guernsey Cheshire Home 30 A N N IV E R S A R Y TH 1987 1987 2017 to celebrate the 30 th birthday of the Guernsey Cheshire Home Dinner SATURDAY 18TH NOVEMBER 2017 arrivAL TIME between 6.45PM - 7.15PM OGH LIVE MUSIC TO END THE EVENING BY THE BLONDETTES DRESS CODE - BLACK TIE COMPLIMENTARY WELCOME DRINK SPONSORED BY BABBÉ ADVOCATES Philip Smith and Warren Mauger from “This is Epic” talking about finding your physical limits 1987 - 2017 EVENT supporters In December 1987 our first residents John Robert and Maureen Walden moved into the newly established Guernsey Cheshire Home, or ‘Shorncliffe’ as it was called and on Saturday 18th November 2017 we are celebrating this amazing milestone with a Gala Dinner at the OGH in the presence of Sir Ian and Lady Corder. The total raised so far is £22,682 and they hope to increase this to £25,000 by the end of the year. The Home really appreciates the incredible amount of hard work put in by the Support Group throughout the year to raise much-needed funds. Thanks from all the residents and staff. Fishing trips We should like to say a big thank you to Richard Seager who has been taking our residents and staff on fishing trips in his boat for the last six years. These trips have always been free of charge and are something the residents really look forward to. As you can see from the photo they have a great time and usually catch quite a few fish which our chefs then prepare for their evening meal. The staff who accompany the residents enjoy it so much that they have a trip of their own most years as well. St Saviour’s Community Centre For the past couple of years the St Saviour’s Community Centre has let us use their facilities free of charge for an activities day. All residents and day visitors are included as well as staff. Our activities staff come up with new ideas every year, including a treasure hunt, paper-cup-tower building and quizzes; this year included making an outfit with newspapers, which as you can see ended up with two of our residents wearing their outfits. This was followed by a BBQ cooked by our chefs on site. A big thank from all of us to Lisa Tempest for allowing us to use the Centre again this year. THANK YOUS © 2017 Guernsey Cheshire Home.
