As a photography student, you will benefit fromnumerous facilities, including colour and black and white darkrooms, film-processing facilities for colour and black and white film, a dedicated digital area, a wide range of photographic equipment available to hire, fully-equipped photographic studios and an excellent range of contemporary and historical books, ebooks and journals.

The course includes an introduction to theessential skills and knowledge needed to establish a critical practice and study during your time here. You will explore analogue and digital photography, studio practice, documentary photography, city and landscape/nature photography, photography history and theory, and have the chance to be part of study visits and a field trip abroad.

Later in the course you will participate in exhibitions and work experience, while developing your own research and practice with increasing independence.

If you have any problems obtaining copies, The Photographers’ Gallery in London runs a mail order book service and does stock these books.

-Stephen Bull Photography London:Routledge, 2010

- Anna Fox and Natasha Caruana Behind the Image: Research in Photography Zürich:AVA Publishing, 2012

-Charlotte Cotton The Photograph as Contemporary Art London: Thames and Hudson, 2004

-Anna Fox et al Langford’s Basic Photography (9th Edition) London: FocalPress, 2010

-Mary Warner Marien Photography: A Cultural History London: Laurence King, 2010

-Susan Sontag On Photography London:Penguin, 1979

-Liz Wells (ed.) Photography: A Critical Introduction (4th Edition) London: Routledge2010

EQUIPMENT LISTStudents on the course will be required to purchase certain items of equipment. Most equipment will be specified when you arrive, and additional items will be needed in some cases in later stages of the course. You should have the following items from the start:

-A4 ring binders – at least two to start off, withA4 paper for lecture / workshop notes

-Sketch books workbooks (for collations of visual research)-35mm negative file sheets with A4 binder /folder

-It is recommended that photography studentshave their own 35mm camera with standardlens at least – this will be needed from the start of the course.

The camera should be good quality but thesimpler the better Autofocus etc is unnecessary. It must have manual exposure control. If of the DX code-reading type it should allow modification of film speeds for precise work. Older models are generally more suitable and relatively cheap second-hand: good ‘big name’ makes such as Canon, Pentax, Olympus, Nikon etc are ideal. Some others (e.g.Praktica, Zenith) may not be as suitable.

-As a starting point a 50mm standard lens isfine. A wide angle lens

(24, 28 or 35mm) is alsovery useful; then (lower priority) a long focuslens (100/135mm). Zoom lenses covering approximately 28 –70mm are a good solution

-Developing tank for 35mm and 120 film(Paterson Universal Tank recommended).

-Suitable thermometer for photographic processing

-Agfa Lupe or similar magnifier for looking atcontact sheets

-‘Focus Finder’ grain magnifier for use withenlargers. (Paterson ‘Micro Focus Finder’recommended).

-You will need a flash gun. If you haven’t got one, wait until you join us and we can advise you

-Small masking frame for prints (10” x 8” or12” x 10”) – bigger if you prefer / can afford it.Again, if in doubt wait for advice from tutorsat the start of the course.

As a UCA student you will have access to theequipment stores. The stores keep a wide rangeof photographic equipment available for short term loan.

If you are considering purchasing a DSLR it is worth considering that the range of lenses available are Nikon fit.

In terms of digital technology, the courseat Farnham uses Photoshop on Applecomputers. If you’re considering an IT purchase, it is recommended that you wait until you are enrolled at UCA. Apple has a UCA discounted store, you’ll save around 10% on the standard prices for computers. The store can be accessed from campus (it won’t work outside the University):

Students also benefit from having both a USBmemory stick and their own hard drive (250GBor larger is recommended) to move large filesaround.

Recommended suppliers include:

- Firstcall photographicwww.firstcall-photographic.co.ukWeb-based mail order company with a hugecatalogue selling cameras, darkroom suppliesand film as well as digital equipment andpaper. No second-hand equipment.

-London Camera Exchangewww.lcegroup.co.uk/index_group.phpLong-established chain of camera shops withparticularly good guaranteed second-handcameras. Visit your local branch if possible.

-Jacobs Photo Videowww.jacobsdigital.co.uk/index.phpDespite the website name they do havehealthy 35mm and medium / large formatdepartments. Good range of new and usedequipment.

-Jessopswww.jessops.comNot really recommended as despite beingprobably the UK’s biggest photo retailerthey have all but completely stopped selling‘analogue’ (i.e. film-based) equipment, but thelarger stores have second-hand departmentsand still stock film and paper.

-Calumet Photowww.calumetphoto.co.ukProvide discount cards for UCA students.

NB: The University has no financialagreements etc. with any of these retailers.Recommendations are based on staff andstudent experience.

There is a small art supplies shop on campuswhich can supply the smaller items requiredsuch as craft knives, scissors, pens and pencils etc.

They do stock a limited range of photographic papers and films but most students use more specialist suppliers for most of their requirements.

EQUIPMENT LIST COURSE COSTS If liable for tuition and registration fees these willneed to be paid separately.

Information on thesefees can be found here:

www ucreative.ac.uk/fees-financialsupport

Costs will vary according to the kind of workyou produce. Staff will be able to advise you on how to pay reasonable prices for materials such as paper and film.

It is recommended that you budget around£500–£1,000 for materials per year. It is possible to work on a budget much lower than this.

There will be, on average, two to three one-day study visits per term and approximately £50 should be budgeted for each of these.

The field trip usually costs around £300 and a further £200 approximately should be budgeted for expenses while on the trip.

VISITSThere will be, on average, two one-day studyvisits in each of the terms during Stage Oneand Stage Two.

These are often visits where students and staff meet in London to visit exhibitions and sometimes to attend talks.

There is usually also a one-day visit to the Brighton Photo Biennial (BPB). Each student will have the opportunity to join afield trip abroad. This is likely to last for five toseven days and be based in a city such as Berlinor Paris.
