Welcome to MA Fashion at UCA Rochester. I am are very pleased that you have chosen to study here and join our postgraduate community for what will be a challenging, busy and exciting year (or two years, if you are a part-time student). Our MA community is diverse,
global and stimulating, and I am confident that in your time with us you will learn much, from your tutors, from your fellow students, and most of all from your own experiments and endeavours.
You join the School of Fashion at Rochester, which has BA courses in Fashion Design, Fashion Atelier, Fashion Media and Promotion, Fashion Buying Retail Management, and Fashion Textiles Print. We have a wide range of excellent studios, equipment and technical facilities, all available to MA as well as BA students. As an MA student you also have a dedicated MA teaching space.
Positioned within the School of Fashion, MA Fashion also has close contacts with UCA Rochester’s other MA courses in other schools – MA Photography, MA Design and MA Contemporary Jewellery. Cross-disciplinary links across the MA community will be important to your experience at UCA, and you will benefit from the expertise of staff both within and beyond your core subject area, to help you to challenge your expectations and develop your practice as befits a postgraduate student.
The general outline for the course timetable is that you will be required to attend sessions on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. There will be technical workshops offered throughout the year which will fall on days other than these core teaching days. In the first semester you will attend lectures, seminars and tutorials that will support the formulation of your self-led postgraduate project.
Never forget that as an MA student you are in control: you must drive forward your research and practice and maintain the momentum in your project. This is your chance to develop your unique ideas and skills to a high level.
I have included here a short bibliography, listing a few books that you might want to look at in preparation for the course. You should also take all the opportunities you can to visit museums and galleries, and immerse yourself in the culture of fashion.
The induction week will take place in the week beginning Monday 14 September, when you will be introduced to the Rochester campus, the academic staff, your peers and the workshop facilities: I very much look forward to meeting you in September 2015.
