"Is there anyone sick among you? He should ask for the presbyters of the church. They, in turn, are to pray over him anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord." (James11-35:J.4-J.5) Parishioners who are seriously ill or antici-pating hospitalization for a serious illness are re-quested to call the parish office if they wish to re-ceive the sacrament. Some hospitals provide full time priests/chaplains. Patients are regularly visit-ed and offered the sacrament of the anointing of the sick, as well as daily Communion. This, how-ever, presumes inpatient admission. Those pa-tients who are interested in receiving this sacra-ment, but are scheduled for outpatient or same day surgery, should call the parish office to en-sure anointing before going to the hospital.

Welcome home Fr. Steve Leake. Fr.

Steve attended Immaculate Conception

School and Archbishop Shaw High

School. He tells me that his vocation

was influenced greatly by Msrg.

Pagliughi. Yet, Fr. Steve entered the

Salesian order, where he completed

formation and served for over 30

years. His parents are very happy to

have him back home for a while.

Fr. Steve is officially assigned here as

Parroquial Vicar, but also to serve the

pastoral needs of the Hispanics at Ho-

ly Guardian Angles and Christ the

King. This ministry will involve him

celebrating the Spanish Mass and a

few hours each week at each place.

Fr. Steve and I will rotate every week

for the Spanish Mass here, with him

taking 1 or 2 English Masses. Due to

the 10:30am Spanish Mass at HGA, he

will only be to celebrate the 10am

when Fr. Buddy takes the Spanish

Mass there.

Once again, we see how difficult it is to be a

disciple. Last week we heard Jesus tell po-

tential disciples that they had to leave every-

thing and follow him immediately: “Let the

dead bury their dead”(Lk.9:60). Today we

hear that Jesus is sending his disciples “like

lambs among the wolves” (Lk.10:3). They

have to depend on the kindness of

strangers, as they are to travel without mon-

ey or belongings. Welcomed? Attend to their

needs. Rejected? Shake the dust off your

feet and move on. But no matter what, tell

the people, “the kingdom of God is at

hand” (Lk. 10:9, 11). Jesus sends seventy-

two, equal to what was regarded as the

number of nations in the world. Symbolical-

ly, Jesus is sending disciples to every nation

on earth. No wonder he needed many labor-

ers for the harvest. St. Paul was a model

disciple, for he preached God’s word all

across the known world. He witnessed to

the true sign of inclusion in God’s kingdom.

No longer was it circumcision, which exclud-

ed the Gentiles and women. Now it is faith

in the power of the cross, the redemptive

power of Christ’s crucifixion. In the new cre-

ation, everyone is able to receive salvation.

Therefore, even now, especially now, Jesus

needs many laborers for the harvest.

How can you labor with the Lord for the

harvest?

Bienvenido a casa Padre Steve Leake. Padre Steve asistió a la Es-cuela de la Inmaculada Concepción y la Escuela Secundaria Archbishop Shaw aquí en Marrero. Me dice que su vocación fue muy influenciada por Mons. Pagliughi. Sin embargo, el padre Steve entró en la orden sale-siana, donde completó su formación y sirvió durante más de 30 años. Sus padres están muy felices de tenerlo en casa por un tiempo.

Padre Steve está oficialmente asig-nado aquí como Vicario Parroquial, pero también para servir a las nece-sidades pastorales de los hispanos en las Iglesias de Los Angeles Guar-dianes y en Cristo Rey. Este ministe-rio lo involucrará celebrando la misa en español y algunas horas cada se-mana en cada lugar. Educación Religiosa ¡Otro año escolar á terminado! Una vez más á sido un momento de gran bendición para los niños de nues-tra Parroquia. Este año, nuestra Escuela y Escuela Pa-rroquial de Religión han preparado y presenciado los Bautismos de siete de nuestros estudiantes y la Primera Reconciliación y Primera Eucaristía de cincuenta y ocho jóvenes. Además , celebramos el Sacramento de la Con-firmación con veintiún de nuestros estudiantes de secun-daria. ¡Tan pronto como termina, comienza de nuevo! Ac-tualmente estamos aceptando la inscripción para la Es-cuela Parroquial de Religión 2019-2020. Para registrar-se, puede venir a la Oficina de la Iglesia y completar un formulario de inscripción. Los formularios estarán dis-ponibles de Lunes a Viernes de 10:00am – 12:00 pm y de 1:00pm – 4:00pm. Las fechas de fin de semana para la inscripción estarán disponibles a fines de verano y se anunciarán más adelante. Si su hijo recibirá la Primera Comunión el próximo año (escolar), deberá enviar una copia de su Certificado de Bautismo. La cuota de ins-cripción es de $25 por el primer niño y $15 por cada uno adicional. Por favor vea a Rhonda o al Padre Jimmy si esto presenta una dificultad. Prayer for Protection of Conscience Rights in Health Care

Father, in Jesus our Lord, we praise and thank you for your most precious gift of human life and for forming us in your divine image. Keep us, the dwelling place of your most Holy Spirit, ever healthy in body and soul. Jesus, Divine Healer, pour your grace upon all those afflicted with illness or disease. Protect from all harm those who are vulnerable due to sickness, suffer-ing, frailty, poverty or age, whether elderly or unborn. Holy Spir-it, touch the hearts of all who serve human life in medicine and science, so they will protect the dignity of each person, from conception to natural death, and remain faithful advocates of all entrusted to their care. Grant those who are called to serve as health care providers renewed conviction in their ministry, and increased wisdom to treat the whole person, and not merely the illness. Protect the right of health care providers to serve their patients without being forced to violate their moral and religious convictions. Guard them against discrimination, that they might be free to follow you faithfully while fulfilling their professional duties. Grant our lawmakers the wisdom and courage to uphold conscience rights for those called to the ministry of healing, and help them resist the pressure to become collaborators in the cul-ture of death. Give us strength to be bold and joyful witnesses to the truth that every human life is sacred. In your goodness, guard our freedom to live out our faith and to follow you in all that we do. Religious Education

As soon as it is over, it begins again! We are currently ac-cepting registration for the 2019-2020 Parish School of Reli-gion (PSR). To register, you may come to the Church Office and fill out a Registration form. Forms will be available Monday- Friday 10:00a.m -12:00, and 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. Weekend dates for registration will be available at the end of summer and will be announced later. If your child will be receiving First Communion next (school) year, you will need to submit a copy of her or his Baptism Certificate. The reg-istration fee is $25 for the first child and $15 for each addi-tional child. Please see Rhonda or Father Jimmy if this pre-sents a hardship.

High School Confirmation In the Archdiocese of New Orleans, young people who have been Baptized and are in the eleventh grade may re-ceive the Sacrament of Confirmation. Immaculate Concep-tion Parish will celebrate this Sacrament again on March 12, 2020. Candidates attending Catholic and Public Schools must register for final preparation. Registration forms are available as stated above. We look forward to meeting all of our candidates. Final preparation will begin in October.

Adult Education and Sacramental Preparation

If you or an adult you know is interested in receiving the Sacraments, or if you just want to ask questions about our faith, call Rhonda at the parish office. This preparation is also called RCIA.

Sanctuary Cleaning Committee of the Ladies Altar Society: New Schedules are ready for you to pick up in the Sacristy. We have had to alter the schedules due to dire circum-

stances, the reality is that our workers are few and the tasks have mushroomed in recent years. It is our intention to get back to basics. If you are not on this committee and would like to help, please call 347-1680 or call the Parish Office. We really need your help. Thank you for answering God’s call to keep His house as beautiful as we keep our own.

Pope Francis’ July Prayer Intention Universal: That those who administer justice may work with integrity, and that the injustice which prevails in the world may not have the last word. Black and Indian Mission Collection Announcement On July 20-21, 2019, the Archdiocese of New Orleans will take up the annual Black and Indian Mission Collection, which has a direct impact in our own archdiocese as we benefit locally from grants funded by the collection. Your generosity to this collec-tion reflects the depths of your faith and your willingness to help our brothers and sisters in need; it is an opportunity to evangelize and further the missionary cause of bringing the Gospel to our African American and Native American family.

The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord.

Sign and Symbol: The sign of peace is more than a

jovial handshake. Its older, formal gesture was a hands-to-

shoulders embrace and a kiss on both cheeks (still seen in many

traditional cultures), but this might be too much to restore. The

deacon and priest “model” the gesture for everyone; they also

show by their example that this is a ritual gesture requiring

simplicity and decorum, not a frantic attempt to shake hands

with everyone in church. The words exchanged might simply be

“The peace of Christ.” This is never the time for hellos or chit-

chat. This is an act of liturgy.
