• Container shipping lines are shifting more of their all‐water services from Asia to the U.S. East Coast to the Suez Canal route, instead of sailing through the Panama Canal, to take advantage of lower slot costs they can realize on the big post‐Panamax ships they are cascading onto the route from the Asia‐Europe trade.

• The geographical position of the Suez canal makes it the shortest route between East & West as compared with the Cape of Good Hope.

• The Canal route achieves a saving in distance between the ports East and West the canal, the matter that is translated into saving in time, fuel consumption and ship operating costs.

• About 10% of the world seaborne trade passes through the Suez Canal.

• What is the Panama canal’s competitors?

• For the past 100 years, the main connection between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans has been the Panama Canal.

• Shippers needing to transport goods around the world have often utilized the small channel, which allows boats to cut considerable time off their journeys.

• As history would have it, the United States has primary control over not just the Panama Canal, but also the Suez Canal and the major trade routes through Singapore, Gibraltar, and some other regions.

• The Northern Sea Route (Russian: Се́верный морско́й путь, Severnyy morskoyput, shortened to Севморпуть, Sevmorput) is a shipping lane officially defined by Russian legislation from the Kara Sea to the Pacific Ocean specifically running along the Russian Arctic coast from Kara Gates strait between the Barents Seaand the Kara Sea, along Siberia, to the Bering Strait.

Page 57: Welcome Irkutsk

• Gains from shipping on an ice‐free Northern Sea Route would be reduced number of days at sea and more than a halving of the vessel's fuel usage. if shipping from northern European to northern Pacific ports.

• For the corporate players in bulk shipping of relative low value raw materials, cost savings for fuel may appear as a driver to explore the Northern Sea Route for commercial transits, and not necessarily reduced lead time.

• The Northern Sea Route allows economies of scale compared to coastal route alternatives, with vessel draught and beam limitation.

• Environmental demands faced by the maritime shipping industry may emerge as one of the drivers for developing the Northern Sea Route.

• Increased knowledge about environmental benefits and costs for both the Northern Sea Route and Suez routes will probably be important factors in this respect.
