WEIGHTY MATTERS
• OBESITY RATES AMONG TODAY’S YOUTH HAVE SOARED TO CRISIS LEVELS, AND THE IMPACT IS BEING FELT IN CLASSROOMS ACROSS THE COUNTRY.
• CAN EDUCATORS HELP TURN THE TIDE?
KIDS IN TROUBLE
• 8 PERCENT OF ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS, 6.4 PERCENT OF MIDDLE SCHOOLS, AND 5.8 PERCENT OF HIGH SCHOOLS HAVE DAILY PHYSICAL EDUCATION.
• 60 PERCENT OF CHILDREN AGES 5 TO 10 HAD AT LEAST ONE RISK FACTOR FOR CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE.
• 9 MILLION CHILDREN OVER AGE 6 ARE OBESE. ANOTHER 15 PERCENT ARE BORDERLINE AND AT RISK.
• 13 PERCENT OF WHILE CHILDREN AGES 12 TO 19 ARE OVERWEIGHT, 21 PERCENT OF AFRICAN-AMERICAN CHILDREN AGES 12 TO 19 ARE OVERWEIGHT, AND 23 PERCENT OF MEXICAN-AMERICAN ADOLESCENTS ARE OVERWEIGHT.

• Proven positive results.• Allows students to use their own bodies for data
collection and analysis.• Provides opportunities for extended learning,
self-analysis, feedback related to fitness, and monitoring of improvement in physical fitness.
• Promotes individualization in work completion with less teacher support.

ALLOWS STUDENTS TO USE THEIR OWN BODIES FOR DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS
Heart monitors areespecially effective forproviding students with feedback as to whether or not they are in their targetheart rate zones andbenefiting from thetraining effect for cardiorespiratory endurance.
OPPORTUNITIES FOR EXTENDED LEARNING
Electronic portfolios
can be used for
students to enter
fitness scores,
exercises, caloric
input/output,
drawings, journal
entries, and fitness plans.
INDIVIDUALIZATION IN WORK COMPLETION
Students can be put incharge of their ownlearning along with thedevelopment of fitnessgoals and plans. Studentsshould begin to developand personalize their ownfitness programs,recognizing the effect thatphysical activity hasacross their lifespan.
INTERDISCIPLINARY COLLABORATION
An interdisciplinary fitness unit
could be supported by a
physical education teacher,
health teacher, science
teacher, FAC teacher, and a
math teacher. Technology
teachers could provide support
and multimedia project
development tools that let
students demonstrate their
learning.
