Welcome message from Mr Antonello De RiuThe Consul General of Italy in Hong Kong and Macau and Chairman of Bellissima Italia Festival

A gold and crisp autumn is approaching. As the summer season is passing fast, the Consulate General of Italy is getting ready for the next intense edition of Bellissima Italia, the festival of Italian culture and lifestyle, which will take place from September to December 2017 with the active participation of Italian institutions and private actors, both Italian and local.

This autumn, our beloved city will be the colourful scenario of a promotional campaign aimed at raising awareness on the great cultural heritage Italy has to offer to Hong Kong and Macau. Our festival is especially meaningful this year as the HKSAR celebrates its 20th Anniversary, and we are very happy to celebrate this important moment together with all Hong Kong people.

Bellissima Italia continues to represent the signature event of the Consulate General of Italy, incorporating several exciting projects implemented by Italian and local companies to promote the best that our Country has to offer in terms of culture, design, fashion and food.

In sum, a unique Festival, where all the “Made in Italy” is emphasized and spread across four intense months, with exclusive gala nights, outstanding art exhibitions and sensorial food tasting experiences. This is only a small part of the many events dedicated to the Italian Lifestyle!

Our culinary traditions and ancient wine making expertise will be the focus of many activities dedicated both to those who are experimenting with Italian taste for the first time and to a very selective audience.

The real way to appreciate this festival? Experience it!

Mr Antonello De Riu

Message from Angelo ParaticoVice-Chairman of Bellissima Italia

It is a great honour and a pleasure to welcome you to the 3rd edition of Bellissima Italia. Once again this unique festival will bring to Hong Kong and Macau all the best of Italy. Following the success of the first two editions, this year we plan to set the bar higher, getting to the real essence of the Italian style.

This year’s events embrace Italian culture in all its various shapes. There is no field in which our Country is famous that will be left behind: fashion, Italian haute cuisine, design, literature, cinema and many more. Browsing through the following pages you will be astonished by the multifaceted variety of initiatives promoted by our partners, both local and Italian.

I would like to add a note of appreciation for the continuous and passionate contribution of the Italian Consulate’s staff members, who have worked on the setting up of this booklet with constant effort, coordinated by the Consul General, Mr Antonello De Riu. For this third edition, Mr De Riu has strengthened the cultural ties between Hong Kong, Macau and Italy through an incredible partnership with the Bellini Museum.

The true spirit of Italian culture can only be understood by enjoying the events that better represent our lifestyle and passions. Curious about our initiatives? If you don’t want to lose any word, photo or hashtag, keep reading!

Departures by Margot Errante

Novalis Contemporary Art Design is pleased to present ‘DEPARTURES’ – a collection of works by Italian photographer and artist Margot Errante.

On the eve of a major life transition, the artist reflects upon unexpected feelings of inevitable farewells, and for the very first time she chooses herself as the main subject of her artistic quest.

The ritual she repeated every night for eight days, in which she purposely looked at herself in the mirror for thirty uninterrupted minutes, resulted into the eight images of this intimate collection. Each photograph is a scaffolding of emotions, an invitation to dig into ourselves and reflect upon our own story.

Donnafugata Wine Dinner at Mistral – InterContinental Grand Stanford Hong Kong

The Sicilian winery Donnafugata was founded in the 1980s by the Rallo family.

The name of the winery comes from a combination of the flight of Maria Carolina, Queen of Naples, who escaped to Sicily ahead of Napoleon’s army in the early 1800s, and a reference to the Italian novel “Il Gattopardo”; “Donna fugata” translates roughly as “woman on the run”. Design in Italia

The passion and mindfulness of Italian artisans manifest in multiple facets including Architectural Design, Industrial Design, Interior Design and Graphic Arts. For the first time, K11 will host DESIGN IN ITALIA Exhibition series co-organised with the Consulate General of Italy, to officially lift the curtains for Bellissima Italia 2017.

An artistic journey of Italian design will unfold at K11 Atrium with a suspended Colosseum art installation by Hong Kong-based architectural design studio UPSOP. “One, No one Pirandello” / “Uno, Nessuno, Pirandello” Screening Week of the Italian Language in the World

Luigi Pirandello is one of the most important and influential poets in Italian literary history: his plays are dialectical disquisitions on essence and appearance, illusion and reality, the problem of personal identity. There are not many books about Pirandello as a man. This documentary traces the life of this great playwright by touching different themes: his relationships with women; his deep Sicilian roots; his love for theatre and cinema; the Nobel Prize in Literature (1934); his adherence to fascism and his death in 1936. Some of Pirandello’s poems will be recited before the screening. The event is part of the “Italian Language Week” and it is an occasion to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Luigi Pirandello.

“Il giovane favoloso” Screening Week of the Italian Language in the World Claudia SCARSELLA Solo Exhibition Opening Reception

Based upon the short but fruitful life of the legendary Italian 19th century poet Giacomo Leopardi, director Mario Martone’s film is a scrupulously researched and cinematically staged period biopic. The film gives the audience a full sweep of the restless and often terribly unhappy events of Leopardi’s life, set within the turbulent context of early 19th-century Italian society, politics and literature. Some of Pirandello’s poems will be recited before the screening. The event is part of the “Italian Language Week” and it is an occasion to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Luigi Pirandello.

Claudia Scarsella was born in Viterbo, Italy in 1979. She graduated from Central Saint Martins College, London and in architecture from Milan Polytechnic. Scarsella has chosen to express herself in the alphabet of collage, both traditional and digital. She assembles illustrations and photos, often her own, hand-drawn illustrations and woven graphics into shimmering, disparate emotional visualities. Her collages are layers of histories, melted and sculpted emotions. They tell of sentiments and bestow order upon her passions. The power of fantasy collected within a frame. International critics and gallery owners, such as Madame Amal Traboulsi (Lebanon) and Ms. Nelida Nassar (USA) all agree that Claudia Scarsella is a unique stylistic figure, powerful, distinctive and original.

For five years, Angelo Milano was able to bring artists from all over the world to his southern Italian village, Grottaglie, including Blu, JR, Conor Harrington, Os Gemeos, Momo, Swoon, Vhils, and others, who were only praised and accepted by the world of contemporary art in the following years. “Journey to the West” by Melanie Ho

Dante Alighieri Society in Hong Kong and Bellissima Italia are proud to host the launch of the book: “Journey to the West” by Melanie Ho.

“Journey to the West” is a short biography of He Hui, arguably the most successful Western opera singer to come out of China. The soprano He Hui is known for her roles in Madama Butterfly, Tosca and Aida. She has sung at the world’s leading opera houses, making history as the first Chinese woman to sing Tosca at La Scala and Aida at New York’s Metropolitan. But He Hui’s story begins in her hometown of Xi’an, China, where she began studying music for the first time as an 18-year old at the prestigious Conservatory of Music.

As she has made her journey west to Verona, her adopted Italian home in the ultimate of Silk Road stories, He Hui has, along the way, encountered a number of successes and challenges. From her second-place finish in Plácido Domingo’s Operalia competition and her debut as Tosca in the notoriously difficult opera city of Parma to learning Italian by living, breathing and experiencing life in Verona, He Hui’s journey has been one of East meeting West and of East and West living alongside each other.

Journey Through Italy’s Valpolicella!

I love Valpolicella! Mostly because this beautiful region of northern Italy has an amazing ability to produce 4 distinct and lip-smacking styles of wines.

In fact, the region is home to very unique winemaking techniques that have become benchmarks for many regions around Italy and the whole world of wine. The “appassimento” method, the drying of the grapes in special ventilated rooms before fermentation, produces wines that are so special that, in Italy, they deserve the nickname of “vino da meditazione”, or wine “to meditate”.

Please join us, for a series of 3 beautiful tastings of Valpolicella Wines at the Hong Kong International Wine & Spirits Fair!

Vinitaly Hong Kong 2017: Artisan Wines of the Veneto!

The Veneto region is a source of fantastic wines, not only because they are lip-smacking, but also because the region is home to an incredibly rich diversity of styles.

From the Alps to the valleys, from the Garda Lake to the Adriatic sea, there are so much climatic and topographic influences that it is impossible to define what is a “typical” Veneto wine. That is exactly what makes the region so exciting for a wine lover!

Through 6 different examples at each tasting, we will begin to get a sense of the amazing potential the region has to offer.

Giacobbe Exhibition – A sensorial painting experience

PARKVIEW ART Hong Kong is delighted to present the work of Luigi Giacobbe in celebration of this year’s Bellissima Italia. The gesture comes first. The action precedes the symbolic act in the hands of painting and writing, because it is a physical need. To leave a mark is a spontaneous gesture, which involves the body before the mind. Overlaying, elevating, defining and removing are all subsequent actions. The sign conveys the feelings of the soul. On canvas, the inner language takes shape, in perfect harmony with the medium that one decides to use.

By standing in front of Luigi Giacobbe’s paintings, it becomes clear that art is always a spontaneous and inevitable triangulation among the work, the person who has artistically produced it, and those who observe it. Each work of art in front of which we choose to linger – at this precise moment in history – does nothing but talk about us, of who we are, and of whom we have decided to be or no longer be. Francesco Lietti Solo Exhibition

This exhibition will display the works created by Italian artist - Francesco Lietti. Francesco Lietti was born in Lecco, Italy. He studied architecture at the politecnico di Milano and the école des beaux arts Paris la seine. After spending seven years in London, Lietti has been based in Hong Kong since 2006. The artist portrays the scenes through simple and direct forms: He paints dreamlike visions that often have a humorous quality, containing playfully distorted and colourful shapes, describing the city in an almost caricatured magnificence.

GDO - Attacchi di pane / Dance Performance

“Attacchi di pane” is a show that ironically plays an ancient, but very contemporary theme: the man in society. The choreographer reinforces the idea that a single person tends to disappear in the group and this is functional to the representation of the concept of society.

The means by which an individual can vent his/her repression and failures are these attacks (attacchi). This path motivates every individual to achieve his/her goal: become happy. Bread (pane) is the metaphorical protagonist of the show: it is the simple answer to that something the individual seeks to fill his/her voids and daily fears.
