Greek and Latin Unit #16

Why Study Word Roots, Prefixes, and Suffixes?

Knowing the "building blocks" of the English language - prefixes, suffixes and root words - helps you to understand a word's meaning and spelling convention.

Many English words and word elements can be traced back to Latin and Greek. Often you can guess the meaning of an unfamiliar word if you know the meaning.

A word root is a part of a word. It contains the core meaning of the word

A prefix is placed at the beginning of a word to change its meaning.

A suffix is a word part that is placed at the end of a word to change its meaning.

Often you can guess the meaning of an unfamiliar word if you know the meaning of its parts; that is, the root and any prefixes or suffixes that are attached to it.

Lost Boys Project- The Proposal

The Purpose of a ProposalThe guidelines for a good proposal are the same no matter what type of proposal you need to write.

The most important goal of a proposal is to get your project or suggestions approved. What is the goal of your proposal?

Page 19: Welcome ! MS. AGLIALORO (AG-LEE-A-LORE-O). Who are you? Tell me your name Who was your teacher before this? What are your interests? Hobbies? Favorite

The Proposal-The Plan

Who is my audience? You need to decide to whom you are writing the proposal. You need to make sure that you think about your audience and what they might already know or not know about your topic.

What do I want my audience to get from my proposal? The overall purpose of the proposal should be to get the readers' approval. Your main purpose should be clearly stated. The readers should not have to figure out what you are requesting in the proposal. The best advice is to state your purpose up front and then fill in details later in the proposal.

How can I make sure my audience understands what I want them to know? You must put yourself in the shoes of your readers. Think about what they want to hear. Think about what they don't want to hear. Get someone else to read your proposal before you submit it. Make sure that his or her reaction is what you expected the reader's reaction to be.

The Proposal-The Style

The Style of a ProposalThe basic writing style of a proposal is the same for any type of technical writing:

*State the purpose clearly at the beginning of the proposal.

*State the background information the reader will need to understand your proposal.

*Use language that everyone can understand.

*Use short sentences that are clear and to the point.

*Make sure that your ideas are not hidden between unnecessary words.

*Make sure that the reader has all the important information needed for the final decision.

Argument- is speech or writing that presents a claim about an issue or problem and supports it with reasons or evidence.

Claim- the writer’s position on an issue or problem Evidence- specific pieces of information that support a claim. (facts, quotations,

examples, statistics, or personal experiences) Counterargument- is an argument made to answer an opposing argument, or

counterclaim. A good argument anticipates opposing viewpoints and provides counterarguments to disprove (refute), or answer them.
