APRIL - JUNE 2018
Dear Members, It has certainly has been and continues to be a very active time for the Club. In keeping with the Clubs’ commitment, several improvements are once again underway. The West course renovation began in March and contractors will move directly to the Prestwick course for a complete redo of greens, tees, fairways and bunkers. We understand that the golf course renovation will make tee times somewhat challenging during the busier month of April. Given this, the Pro shop will make every effort to accommodate requests. We also ask for your help, if your time is not needed, please let the shop know in advance. We sincerely hope you will find the end results will be worth this temporary inconvenience, imagine all 45 holes will be newly renovated and offer the best in playing conditions.
In addition to the new Instructional Center, Course Renovations and Cabana Bar, enhancements and capital projects will be ongoing during the summer months to the Prestwick Clubhouse. With this being said, we need your support to help us accomplish our goals of providing the finest in in club amenities. So mark your calendars for the upcoming tournaments and events and take advantage of the very best in Spa services available to you without leaving your community. In closing, please join me in extending a warm welcome to all of our new members. From all of the staff, thank you for your participation and support of all the Club operations
Sincerely,Maria Tuohy, General Manager

Welcome
From the desk of . . . Greg Brousse, Managing DirectorDear Plantation Bay Members,
I hope everyone is enjoying a beautiful spring and is getting ready for a great summer.
As with most summers at Plantation Bay we have lots going with special projects and operationally.
The biggest special project is the course renovations at both Westlake and Prestwick. The Westlake renovation includes all new sand in the bunkers and Tiff Eagle Greens being installed. The Prestwick Renovation will include installing new grass all tees and fairways with Celebration grass and installing Tiff Eagle grass on the greens. Prestwick will also be installing all new sand for each and every bunker.
When complete, Plantation Bay will stand tall with 45 holes of Tiff Eagle Greens, all new bunkers and course conditions that will be the talk of Florida! Construction will have already started on Westlake by the time the newsletter comes out and Prestwick will start April 1st.
The Club will also be completing the comfort station at Prestwick in the very new future which will also serve for shelter during storms. In addition on the golf side of things, the new Golf Instructional Center is already up and running and ready for business!
Operationally we are very excited to have the new Cabana bar open this summer so our members can enjoy food and drinks while enjoying the pool .
I hope everyone has a great summer and we look forward to seeing you at the club enjoying all the amenities and we look forward to re- opening the renovated golf courses.
Sincerely, Gregory P. Brousse, Director of Operations

TURFTALKHello to everyone from the maintenance staff! We hope everyone is enjoying the renovated North/South 18. By the time, you receive this, we should be full throttle with the renovation of the Westlake greens and bunkers. We are going to plant TifEagle turf on the greens and add sand to all the bunkers. We will also work on some wet areas with some additional drainage and clean up the outer edges of the course.
This summer we will also be renovating Prestwick greens, tees, fairways and bunkers. We are going to plant TifEagle turf on the greens and Celebration turfgrass on the tees and fairways. We will also be totally renovating the bunkers. When everything is completed, all 45 holes will have new TifEagle turf, which will keep speeds a little more consistent on all the greens. We will also be working on other projects as the renovation is going on, such as cleaning up the outer edges and working on cart paths.
Thanks again for all the positive comments. See you on the course!
Thanks again,Bob Gruber
From the desk of . . . Chris Harder, Director of GolfHello Plantation Bay members!
Spring has sprung, and summer is right around the corner. This summer will be one of the most exciting in Plantation Bay’s history with 27 holes undergoing renovation. The golf shop staff is so excited for fall to arrive when we will have 45 renovated holes for our members to play! In the short term, we may have some small hurdles with access to the golf course during the times you normally play. The golf shop staff will be working diligently and communicating with members and group leaders to keep a very accurate tee sheet. We ask that you let us know a week ahead of time about who specifically will be playing. This will help us provide you with tee times as close to those you requested. I thank you in advance.
On top of the 27-hole renovation, we now have a new Golf Instructional Center. This studio is outfitted with the latest and greatest technology available to help all of us improve our games. The new building will give our members access to Trackman, V1 Video software, Boditrac pressure mat, and K-Vest 3d Swing System. On top of having the technology to make our swings better, we will also have the ability to fit for Callaway Clubs. It is awesome to have so much new stuff going on at Plantation Bay!

Our season came to an early conclusion as Prestwick was closed for renovations at the end of March, changing the dynamics of that last month of golf for leagues and members alike. BUT, we finished strongly!
Our closing day meeting was also the date of our league’s Benefit for the Battered Women’s Shelter in Bunnell. Members brought canned foods to stock the pantry for current and future short-term residents, and a 50/50 fundraiser brought additional funds for the discretion of shelter management. On this busy day, 2017-18 board members were thanked for their energy for the league, and a new slate of officers was elected. More about them over the summer!
Our final day of league golf for the 2017-18 season was the annual Bring-a-Friend tournament, in which members pair with non-league friends from the neighborhood, or friends from far away. This year’s theme, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, allowed us to channel our inner Holly Golightly . . . on the golf course!

As we say farewell to winter, we prepare for our spring season starting in April with a new Friday 8:30 a.m. tee time at CDB to take the place of our Thursday tee time at Prestwick, which will be closed for renovations.
In April we will play our annual FedEx tournament after the men’s member-guest, followed by a road trip to Ocala, tentatively scheduled for Friday, April 27th. In May we will have our spring Par 3 Tournament, which was a great success in February.
We ask our members and all other golfers to be extra diligent in caring for the course, especially since CDB will be the only course opened in April and into the summer and early fall months.
Ken Marquino, President
PLantation baY ninERSThis has been a busy tournament season! On February 26th, we held our Sadie Hawkins Scramble, followed by a delicious cowboy-themed celebration and dinner with hubbies and friends. In March, the Niners held our annual Member/Member tournament, traveled to Hammock Beach for a Coastal Niners Invitational, hosted a two-person Member/Guest Scramble and held our Championship tournament. In April we enjoyed more inter-league play, visiting Grand Haven for a day of fun golf followed by a delicious lunch. We celebrated our successful season with a Margarita Party on April 26.
Golf and camaraderie are the Niners’ passion, but giving back to the community is a priority. We supported and volunteered in a fashion show benefiting the American Cancer Society, we donated supplies and volunteered in the Flagler Education Foundation golf tournament, and we continue to support Rose’s Academy, a Shelter for teenage girls.
We recently welcomed new member, Vickie Cardella. If you are a golf member who would like to play nine holes with a fun-loving group of women, please join us! We will be playing at CDB on Mondays and Thursdays throughout the spring and summer months while Prestwick and Westlake are being renovated.

The PWGA season traditionally starts in October and ends the last week in April, but because of the closing of Prestwick for renovation, our end-of-season schedule had to be adjusted. Our championship was moved from April to February to allow play on our home course. (Congratulations to Overall Champion, JoAnn Van Hoozen, and Senior Champion, Lois Wilhelm!) After Prestwick closes, scheduled tee times at CDB will replace shotgun starts. Watch for email updates for specific dates and times.
Always attracting a strong turnout was the two-week Member/Member tournament. First place winners in the first through fourth flights, respectively, were Dannae Karins & Sonya Stutchfield, Chris Dion & Pam Hammond, Maureen Hutchinson & Barbara Sette, Carol Banks & Denise Goering. Congratulations!
I would like to thank the 2017-18 PWGA committee members for all their work during the past season. Members include Dawn Laylock, Tournament Chair; Linda Semko, Treasurer; Diane Cody, Secretary; Pat Wilson, Ringers/Handicaps; Debbie Zorn, Hospitality & Membership; Linda Cline, Sunshine; Kathie Walter, Outreach. The committee welcomes suggestions for enhancing PWGA activities in the coming year. Please don’t hesitate to email or call any one of us.
May the coming months of play at CDB be as smooth as can be expected for our members. Have a great spring and summer!

MEMbERSHiP nEWSSpring is a great time to introduce your family or friends who are considering becoming Plantation Bay members to our community and all it offers. We will be happy to issue “Member for a Day” cards so they can experience it for themselves. A great way to show them a good time is to check the calendar for scheduled events, such as Bingo night or a Summer Under the Stars Poolside. During the day, they can play a round of golf, work out at the Fitness Center or play tennis, then perhaps enjoy a massage. In the evening, they’ll be able to dine with you at your event of choice. What a great way to experience all that is Plantation Bay Golf & Country Club!Speaking of things to do…watch for activities that center around the new Cabana poolside. We’ll be putting this new amenity to good use as the weather grows warmer and days grow longer. The 2018 Plantation Bay Membership Directory will be available for pick-up in the membership office in mid April. I will notify everyone by email when they have arrived. One per household please! To all the snowbirds who will be journeying North this spring: have a safe trip and a happy summer. See you in the fall!
I look forward to seeing you around the club!

Harry Liedke - After spending many family vacations in Ormond Beach, Harry Liedke knew that when the time came, this is where he would retire. So, eight years ago, he and his wife, Terri, left the Northeast, took a Discovery Tour here, and fell in love with Plantation Bay.
Harry was an all-star baseball player in high school and college, including captain of the Wesleyan University team. He retired from Great American Insurance and came south to Ormond Beach. He didn’t pick up tennis until after college when his best friend asked him to
play. They were soon competing in USTA Leagues at the National Level. Currently Harry plays in the Volusia Senior Men’s League and is having an undefeated season playing in the Number One position.

January 6 was our Annual Polar Plunge: Oh my…it was COLD! We were shocked but pleasantly surprised…people were ready and waiting! We had some of the coldest weather we had seen in Florida for many years. The actual water temp was 48 degrees. But take a look at all these brave souls! Unlike previous years, no one attempted to swim laps: everyone jumped in and got out as fast as they could! The hot chocolate and treats were certainly welcomed after the event.
Don’t like to think about dieting? How about some ideas for maintaining and not gaining any extra pounds? Here are some tips to cut calories and winning ways to live longer!
• Do not keep sugary drinks in your house.
• Choose a low-calorie meal starter, such as soup or a salad, to help prevent overeating at the meal.
• Order salad dressings on the side.
• Beware of the bread basket when you go out to eat: bread can add hundreds of calories to your meal.
• Be judicious with your chips and salsa: practice moderation, as with everything.
• Prune your meal. Literally trim the meal you have chosen to eat or use smaller plates.
• Be mindful of your alcohol consumption.
• Eat more whole fruits, which contain lots of fiber and vitamins.
• Eat a little lean protein at most meals. Protein makes you feel satisfied.
Another winning discipline is to read the ingredient list on packages and cut the C.R.A.P. This is an acronym to help identify over-processed foods. C – Chemicals that you would not use in your own cooking. R – Refined sugar and flour. A- Artificial colors, flavors, sweeteners. P- Preservatives.
And remember to keep moving. Any activity is better than none! Take short activity breaks after 30 minutes of sitting. Even if you move for just three minutes, it helps to combat sedentary behavior.
A good night’s rest, activity and diet are the pillars of wellness! One must work to keep them all in balance in order to maintain optimal functioning.
To help keep the balance, you may also need a massage, a beautifying facial or a manicure/pedicure. Let us book that appointment for you.

Here is a SIMPLE tip: NET-to-NET and BACK-to-BACK What does this mean? If you’re ever unsure which opponent to hit toward in doubles, remember there are basically only two options: net-to-net or back-to-back. The choices come from where you are on the court when you strike the ball. In the middle of an action-packed doubles point, aim at the person closest to the net if you are at the net yourself. This puts pressure on your opponents by hitting to the person who has less time to react. If you are at the baseline, hit toward the person who is farthest from the net to give you more time to recover and improve your own court position. SIMPLE…remember, net-to-net and back-to-back. See how it works and have fun!
