First Church Chimes

Our Mission and Vision Statement The mission of the United Methodist Church

is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

At Warsaw First United Methodist Church we SOW-GROW-BLOOM-SCATTER

the seeds of God’s love throughout the world.

Warsaw First United Methodist Church 179 S. Indiana Street, Warsaw, IN 46580 Office: 574.267.6933/Fax: 574.267.7281

Friends, With everything else that has been happening these past 6 weeks here at FUMC, I realize today that I haven’t talked at all with you about our Church’s upcoming General Conference, which will be held at the Oregon Convention Center from May 10-20. General Conference (GC) is the policy-making body of our Church. GC can reverse church law, as well as adopt resolutions on current moral, social, public policy and economic issues. It also approves plans and budgets for church-wide programs. ONLY GC can officially speak for the United Methodist Church. The legislation that happens here will guide our Church policy and ministry for the next 4 years, as will be outlined in

the 2016 Book of Discipline. Thousands of petitions are addressed at each GC, and the first week focuses on the various legislative groups sifting through the same, similar, or related subjects, to better focus work during the second week. In addition to legislation, attendees experience some of the best preaching and worship available in our denomination. Delegates come from all over the world and are elected from our various Annual Conferences, number being determined by membership. With Indiana having been united into one conference 8 years ago, we have more delegates than some larger areas because of our dense population. Half of our delegates are clergy while half are laity. Annual Conferences work to be diverse and representative in their electing, with attention to gender, ethnicity, and age. Indiana has a total of 16 delegates (lay and clergy) who were elected last year to serve. Among the conversations that will happen at the 2016 GC:

There are several proposals for restructuring the ministries of the General Church. The General Board of Global Ministries is developing legislation to establish a new unit on global health. It is an international program,

tentatively called “Abundant Health: Our Promise to Children.” Efforts to bring together a truly global Book of Discipline, which will have sections that apply to all United Methodists everywhere and are

not subject to local adaptation. Tenure for Bishops. Matters related to ordained and licensed ministry. Proposal of a new hymnal that includes digital technology to provide worship resources in a variety of settings. Legislation to ensure that young people are appropriately represented in the church. There are many proposals from annual conferences about human sexuality, suggesting removing or adding less restrictive language to

our Social Principles. Others call for the current language to be upheld. This is one of the conversations that has global implications and is no easier solved in a larger group than it is in a smaller one.

Needs and equitable treatment of persons with disabilities. Sustainable and responsible investments: issues of investment strategies. Racism/Xenophobia: Petitions call for the use of diverse language in the US, ethnic ministry plans, ongoing acts of repentance, and

responsibility for the eradication of racism at all levels in the church. Immigration Environmental action: How we care for Creation. Economics and Finance.

For more information on any of these topics and others, see umc.org. If you’re interested, you can download all 3000 petitions to GC and think through how you think the church should respond. You’ll be able to listen in on the general sessions, as well…again, more info on how to do that at umc.org. As our delegates continue to meet together in preparation, please pray for them and for our church. There will be many good and blessed conversations and responses, but the media always looks for the most dramatic and controversial. Our church is bigger than that, so pray that we will be an example of love and peace-making for our world. PS. The next important event happening in our larger church is Jurisdictional Conference, which will take place July 13-16 in Peoria, IL. This is where bishops are elected. This year will be particularly important to us as Bishop Mike Coyner is retiring and Indiana will be assigned a new bishop. Again, please pray for our delegation as they discern.

Worship at the Park Begins May 29, 2016

Beginning Sunday, May 29 at 8:00 a.m. and continuing through September 4, there will be an 8:00 a.m. worship service

at Lucerne Park on Pike Lake. In case of rain, the service will be held in the Sanctuary, Downtown. Traditional Worship service moves to 9:30 a.m. in the Sanctuary Downtown. Contemporary Worship is at The Connection Campus at 11:07 a.m.

2nd Quarter Coin Offering Bashor Children’s Home is a nonprofit child welfare agency

located in Goshen and affiliated with the United Methodist

Church. Bashor successfully serves hundreds of children and

their families each year in the following ways:

Operates four residential treatment programs where

children temporarily reside on the campus, three

alternative day education programs where

children live at home but attend the on-site

alternative school, and eight community based

programs which strive to support families and

prevent children from being removed from the

home.

As a faith-based, mission-driven place of

unconditional care, comfort and concern, Bashor

is solution focused and utilizes family centered

opportunities to build upon success, cultivate

strengths, and encourage positive growth.

Opened an emergency shelter for teens in early April.

The recently renovated cottage can house up to 12

teens.

Funds collected during the 2nd quarter will support Bashor’s

Legacy of Sheltering Children to Change Lives. Check out

Bashor’s website for more information.

www.bashor.org Thanks so much for your support!

Karen Ujereh, Covenant Missionary

FUMC’s Outreach Ministry Team is looking to fulfill the

financial commitment to our Covenant Missionary, Karen

Ujereh, in 2016—$5 per member or approximately $2500.

In just the first quarter of the year, over $1000 has been

collected—“woo-hoo!” Karen serves as director of the

United Methodist Malawi Microfinance Program in Blantyre

(Malawi’s second-largest city and commercial capital). Her

responsibilities include teaching financial literacy classes in

which she introduces the concept of microfinance loans as

an economic development tool. FUMC families and friends

are invited to collect coins throughout the year for Karen.

“Coins for Karen” containers are available in the Atrium

(Downtown Campus) or the Welcome Center (Connection

Campus)—contact Nancy Carder ([email protected]

or 253-2836) with any questions.

If there is a high school or college graduate in your family, please submit their graduation date, school, and future plans to the church office at [email protected] by May 27. Graduates will be honored on Sunday, June 5th.

Dear FUMC and Higher Education Committee friends, Thank you so much for the card and gift card! It was a wonderful surprise, and made my day. I hope that all is going well back home! Best, Ashley Neubaum, Purdue University

From the Archives: Question: Downtown, on the wall to the left as you walk up the ramp and enter the sanctuary, there is a wall hanging that has a picture and appears to be made of metal. I would guess that it came from Europe or maybe the Middle East. Does anyone know what it is exactly and where it came from and when? If you have any information, please call the church office. ~ Janet Kirkpatrick

This picture shows Warsaw FUMC youth delivering blankets to Fellowship Mission.

Upcoming: The Youth will be going to Bashor on May 7th. Ten-tatively leaving the Downtown campus at 8 am. We will return in the afternoon. Watch for more details!

May Preaching Topics

May 1--6th Sunday of Easter/Communion Text: Ephesians 4:1-16 Series: A Disciples Heart (continued) Theme: The journey toward perfection is personal but not private. We make it in the company of other imperfect disciples. The church is a community that encourages, challenges, supports and holds us accountable for our discipleship, through which we become the agents of God’s love at work in the world. Title: The Company of the Committed May 8-7th Sunday of Easter/Mother’s Day Text: Jeremiah 20:7-9 Theme: Sanctification is not just about us. Being made perfect in love includes the process by which the Holy Spirit empowers us to be the agents of God’s love and grace in the world. The aim of Christian perfection is both a warm heart and a transformed world. Title: On Fire With Holy Love May 15-Pentecost Sunday Text: 1 Corinthians 13:8-13 Theme: What is heaven? What is Christian perfection? Title: All the Way to Heaven

Friends of our Church family, “I was glad when they said unto me, let us go into the house of the Lord.” (Psalms 122:1) Thank you for honoring us at the breakfast last Sunday. It’s been our pleasure to work with the children for the last 30 years. We are not anxious to leave Warsaw, but we look forward to the new adventure God has planned for us in Delaware. First Church will always have a special place in our hearts. We feel truly blessed to have been a part of what will always be our Church. To the children, Your homework while we‘re away is to keep God first, attend Church, read your Bible, say your prayers, and be kind to each other. As Paul told Timothy (I Timothy 4:12) “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young (or old like us), but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith, and in purity.” One last loving reminder from Mrs. Compton: (Psalms 91:11-12) “For He will command His angels concerning you, to guard you in all ways; they will lift you up in their hands so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.” Yours in Christ, Rick & Ann Compton

A fond farewell and God speed to Rick and Ann Compton. Thank you for your faithful service to Warsaw FUMC for many years!
