August 2014
Welcome Rabbi Kieffer Temple Emanuel welcomes Rabbi Bertram U.
Kieffer and his wife Dianne to our community.
Rabbi Kieffer officially began his duties as our new
spiritual leader on August 1, 2014. They come to us
from The Sunrise Jewish Center, a conservative
synagogue in Sunrise, Florida which has recently
merged with another conservative synagogue in the
same area. Prior to Sunrise he served for six years
as Rabbi of Temple Beth Zion, a 225-member
congregation in Royal Palm Beach, Florida. This
was his first pulpit as a Rabbi/Hazzan having
received his Rabbinic ordination in 2004. From
1988 to 2004 he served as a Cantor for several synagogues where his duties
included overseeing the training of B’nai Mitzvah, teaching Hebrew High
School classes in synagogue skills and teaching music in the pre-school and
Hebrew School. He and his wife, Dianne, have been instrumental in
rejuvenating USY/Kadima groups. He has innovated a successful Cantorial
Concert series, a thriving Youth Chorale, and a year round volunteer Adult
Choir and actively participated in many community-wide programs both
individually, and with the choirs.
Where ever, he has served he has been committed to community involvement
and effective synagogue programming.
Dianne is committed to synagogue life with her involvement in developing
programs, classes and events to further synagogue life. She is also a licensed
realtor.
In his early years, Rabbi worked as a professional singer. Part of that work
included serving various congregations as Cantor for the High Holidays and
conducting Passover Seders.
His Honors, Awards, and Professional Affiliations include
Doctor of Divinity, honoris causa: Mesifta Adath Wolkowisk, November, 2008
Rabbinic Ordination, Mesifta Adath Wolkowisk, The Rabbinical Academy
November 2004

MESSAGE FROM RABBI KIEFFER:
Each generation of Jews has to grapple with the same problem, namely, how do we keep our distinct
identify as Jews while living in a modern, secular world? What traditions should we keep? What
traditions no long hold up for us? Do we even need our religion in the fast-moving computer-driven
times in which we live?
As a seeker and a searcher myself, I find these questions challenging enough that I chose to devote
the last 26 years of my life, as both a Cantor and Rabbi, to participating in this discussion. It’s been a
wonderful experience to try and help people feel more comfortable in their faith. There are so many
choices, so many variations on how to be a Jew. In Lakeland, the best place to work through these
issues is right here at Temple Emanuel.
I don’t have to tell you that today all religions are facing difficult challenges. Though our Shul may
be comprised of people from a wide vista of Jewish backgrounds and expectations, one thing can help
to unite all of us. If we want our Syngagogue to survive and even thrive, we must each make a
pledge. We must make a pledge of kindness.
Every day when we wake up, we can first thank God for giving us another day of life and we can
secondly pledge to be kind today. We can be kind to our spouse and families. We can be kind to our
caregivers if we’re in that circumstance. When we come into the Shul, we can kiss the mezuzah to
remind us to bring kindness into this building. We can only say nice things to people we encounter
here. When outsiders come into our Shul and see everyone being so kind to each other and so
welcoming to visitors, well...that’s something WE can provide that the computer CANNOT! Shouldn’t
our Shul be an oasis of kindness insulating us for a few precious moments from the surrounding
desert of traffic lights, telephone answering machines, and a technology that dehumanizes us more
and more each day?
Be kind to your Board members. Help them do the work of keeping this Shul afloat. Remember
they’re volunteers! They could be home with their families instead of trying to figure out how to keep
this institution viable.
Be kind to our staff. They are overworked. For relatively small remuneration, they work under a
great deal of stress.
When you have criticisms, try to relay to them in a kind way. Compliments, by the way, are always
welcome.
Most of all, be kind to each other. In the “Sim Shalom” prayer (grant peace) that we recite every
morning, we ask God for “Chayn, vachesed, v’rachamin”, i.e., “Grace, kindness and mercy.”
Wouldn’t it be wonderful if when people come through our doors they experience those wonderful
feelings of grace, kindness and mercy from just being amongst us? That’s how, with God’s help, we’ll
create a new beginning, right here at the new Temple Emanuel of Lakeland, Florida.
The founders of this Shul named it Emanuel from the Hebrew words: “Imanu El”, meaning “God is
with us.” Kein Y’hi Ratzon...May it be so!”
On behalf of my wife, Dianne, our kids, Michael, Jacqui, Daniel, Elanna and Koby, we wish you a
pleasant remainder of the summer. May your air conditioner blow so cold you’ll need blankets in
August, may all hurricanes find their way up to the Artic Circle and may you all enjoy a Shanah Tova
Um’tukah..a happy, healthy and “sweet” new year.
Rabbi Bertram U. Kieffer

FROM THE DESK OF THE PRESIDENT:
“CHANGE” is a good thing. It keeps us alert and makes us work harder.
However, too much of a sudden change is devasting. Our entire
professional staff has changed! We welcome Rabbi Bertram Kieffer and
his loving wife, Dianne; they will bring new inspiration to old and new
members. We saw in him an opportunity of change, both religiously and
socially. It is now up to YOU to join him at services and learn what
excited us about him joining our family.
We mourn the loss of Sue Moore, but this change has brought us Cindy
Lohman, an energetic, highly-qualified executive secretary, who not only
has to learn new office applications, but also an entire religious
language.
Finally, our caretaker, Joseph, has decided to change employment. In
his life he has a new love interest and with that has come changes. We
wish him good luck in his new relationship and his move.
Change is good, change is difficult, but change is necessary. Bonnie, our family of six children, and I wish our
Temple Family a Happy and Healthy New Year.
