SWAZILAND >ALL ABOUTSOUTH AFRICAWELCOME TO THE RAINBOW NATION! South Africa, as can be gathered from its name, is the country furthest to the south of the African continent. It is a vast country in terms of land area and has varying plateaus and climates from province to province. It is bounded on the south by 2,798 kilometers of coastline of southern Africa stretching along the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. South Africa is the 25th-largest country in the world by land area, and with close to 53 million people, is the world’s 24th-most populous nation. Prided as the “Rainbow Nation”, South Africa is a multicultural society and is the only country in the world to have 11 official languages and national anthem using those different languages. Although English is spoken widely in across the country, it is surprisingly ranked as fourth on the list of official languages behind Afrikaans, Zulu and Xhosa.

OUR WORK IN SOUTH AFRICASouth Africa is a young nation in its current form, and although peaceful it is facing challenges relating to poverty, health, education, inequalities and housing in particular.Approximately 1.9 million informal shacks exist in here, which provide poor quality living environments, with limited access to amenities such as water and electricity and are extremely vulnerable to fire and weather damage. The population living in these informal shacks and also in more legal versions, called Townships, are generally those facing poverty, unemployment, poor health, high rates of HIV/AIDS, and have little access to education. There is a large gap creating inequalities in the quality of the lives amongst South Africa’s population.

Our primary target communities are around the Hout Bay area where we engage and empower youth in education and personal development activities, with the hope of improved future options and avoidance of negative behaviours such as substance use and joining gangs. We also support social enterprise to assist with employment and skill transfer to local community members.

CULTURE & HISTORYThe country boasts some of the world’s most exciting attractions ranging from natural scenery, beaches and wildlife to bustling cities rich in cultural diversity. Cape Town is known as the “Mother City” and encapsulates much of the diversity South Africa is famous for. It is steeped in history but is also one of the world’s most beautiful cities. With its dramatic mountain backdrops and white sand beaches with an amazing diversity of cultures and associated urban life, it is hard to beat.

In 1990 President Frederik Willem de Klerk began negotiations to end apartheid, culminating in multi-racial democratic elections in 1994, won by the African National Congress (ANC) under Nelson Mandela. Since the ruling African National Congress (ANC) has strived to overcome the historic segregation and create unified national loyalties on the basis of equal rights and access to amenities for all.

Although once ravaged by the apartheid regime, South Africa is a young nation in its current form; has fast become a melting pot of cultures and has moved towards international acclaim for its diversity and beauty.

SOUTH AFRICAN WEATHER The South African summer is opposite to the northern hemisphere, with hot temperatures being experienced in December and cooler temperatures in July.

• Summer is from November to March – generally it is hot with little rain

• Spring and Autumn are from April to May and September and October – the weather in the day iswarm, with cooler evenings and some rainfall

• Winter is from June to August and the weather is cooler, evenings can be quite cold and there is more rainfallGenerally some rain, sunshine and wind are expected throughout the seasons.

WHERE WILL I STAY IN SOUTH AFRICA?

Hout Bay Backpackers has a truly stunning view over Hout Bay beach and local shops, markets, restaurants and amenities are all within walking distance. Cape Town centre is a short bus ride away, with stops outside the backpackers.

You will be accommodated in shared dorms with communal bathrooms with bed linen and pillows. There are communal living spaces, DSTV, kitchen and terrace for you to use, and staff will help you organise trips and excursions to local sights.

Hout Bay is situated in a valley on the Atlantic seaboard of the Cape Peninsula, twenty kilometres south of the Central Business District of Cape Town. It is bordered by Table Mountain and a white sand beach. Hout Bay has one of the busiest fishing harbours in the Western Cape with an established fish industry, and great fish restaurants.

MEALSVolunteers, interns and students receive 3 meals a day when joining an All Out Africa experience. These meals are provided at Hout Bay Backpackers and are eaten together on the communal decking area in the summer or in the dining room during winter.

Breakfast is self-service from a selection of items including cereals, bread, fruit, yogurt, eggs and spreads. Lunch too is self-service from items such as bread, ham, cheese, salad and fruits. Dinner is a cooked meal which you will assist with cooking on a rotational basis. Types of dishes served include pasta, stir-fry, curry and stew.

ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE

& CHILDCARELearn to speak English through an intense emersion course and use your new language skills to volunteer to help care for underprivileged children in Cape Town, South Africa. Emerging from its apartheid history South Africa’s townships are experiencing the effects of high unemployment, HIV/AIDS, poverty and substance abuse. Many children are vulnerable and are being disadvantaged by not being able to access education.

This project aims to provide support to some or the pre-school centres that have opened in townships to assist these children. You will be based at one of these centres and may help with hands-on teaching, organising activities, caring for the children, and serving them food.

ACCOMMODATION & MEALSDuring your stay you will be accommodated in an award winning Hout Bay Backpackers, in Hout Bay. Three meals a day will also be provided, some on a self-serve basis and others cooked for you.
