It is a great pleasure to welcome The Class of 1963 this weekend as they return to celebrate their 50th Anniversary as graduates of our parish school. I am sure that this weekend will bring back many fond memories and rekindle many friendships, as they reminisce with one another about their grade school years as St. Cletus Cardinals. Much has happened in the lives of these graduates and in the life of our parish and school over the past 50 years. To the class of 1963: this weekend provides each of you the opportunity to return, even if just for a moment, to your youth. You will relive the joys and struggles of that precious time in your lives. You will share stories of times past, present, and future. This will be a time to remember, reconnect, and celebrate each other as you gather once again as Cardinals. It is our prayer that you enjoy your time visiting with each other and our school once again. Know that you are all in our prayers and thoughts today and always. Remember that once a St. Cletus Cardinal - Always a St. Cletus Cardinal! Welcome and Prayers. Fr. Bob Clark Pastor WELCOME ST. CLETUS SCHOOL GRADUATES CLASS OF 1963

NOTES FROM FATHER BOB…

TWENTY-SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME 2013 In the last five years of her life, Audrey Hepburn, that beguilingly beautiful film-star, made almost fifty trips around the world as an ambassador for UNICEF. As a “hands-on” worker for this children’s relief agency, Audrey visited the poverty-stricken regions of Asia and Africa, bringing the world’s attention to these places, and to her own genuine love and compassion for the children and for the people that she met. This work with UNICEF, from 1988 until her death in January 1993, was not her first contact with the children’s charity. As a young girl, she had spent the war years of the 1940’s amid the hardships and shortages of occupied Belgium, living for one month in a cellar, with rats for company. At the war’s end, she remembered receiving food parcels from the Red Cross and from children’s relief agencies, to help keep her alive. Such memories stay with one forever; even when Audrey became the darling of Hollywood and the model for the exquisite fashions and dresses of the designer, Givenchy, she never lost the common touch, or that simple humanity that keeps our feet on the ground and our head level. Her genuine feeling for others even extended to the father who had deserted her at the age of six. In her adult years, with her own money, she supported him financially until his death in 1980 at the age of 94. “Why did you do it?” she was asked. “It helped to lay a ghost,” was her healing reply. This feeling for other people, this sensitivity to human need, whatever the circumstances, whatever the story, is the teaching of the Lord today. Jesus tells a story, a well-known, traditional kind of story, found in many cultures, of the rich man and the poor man, of this life and of the life to come. As you would expect, the Lord tells the story very well, with lots of colorful detail. The rich man’s clothes – purple and fine linen – are described, and his dining table is a daily feast. The poor man has sores and dogs to contend with. The two men live side by side, and yet the rich man does nothing to help Lazarus, the poor man, who can’t even get the scraps. This looks obscene to an outside observer. How can the rich man be so uncaring, so unfeeling? To understand, to discover the answer to that, all we need is a little wealth, a little luxury, a little comfort zone. Once we become ensconced in our pleasures, cozy on our couch, settled on our sofas, it becomes very easy to forget the cold weather outside and the people who might be shivering in it. We don’t like draughts, they disturb our warmth, and in shutting out the draught, we might be guilty at times of shutting out the people who live in the draught. In other words, comfort and luxury have a tendency to make us forgetful of the poor, and—God forgive us—insensitive to suffering. This is serious. In Jesus’s story, we are to identify with the rich man, if we are to do the story justice, and if we are going to allow the story to bring issues of justice home to us. We westerners generally cannot identify ourselves with Lazarus. Most of us are well-to-do. We live in a world that desperately needs to diet, while the rest of mankind is starving. We are cocooned against the cold, protecting our own interests – a favorite political phrase. “Our own interests” form a blind, deaf and dangerous game. Even the Golden Rule has more insight than that: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you”. This simple insight into how we ought to live our lives tells us that it is clearly wrong to ignore the sufferings of others. We are all flesh and blood, and we need to care for each other. If we cannot see that, if we close our eyes to it, no other-worldly vision or stories of resurrection from the dead, will make any difference. We will have lost the plot! Audrey Hepburn’s son, Sean, said, after his mother died, “Mummy believed in one thing above all. That love can heal, fix, and mend, and make everything right in the end. And it did.” The parable today calls us to heal, fix, mend, and to put everything right in the end. Please God, we will. Peace, Father Bob Pastor

UPDATE

Thank you for so faithfully answering the call as we request “most needed items” in the Canticle each week! Once again, our shelves have many empty spots as our volunteers prepare 300+ bags for October distribution.

♦ Items most needed are tuna, cereal, pasta, pasta sauce, canned meat, meals in a can, dry pinto beans and boxed sides. ♦ However, we are low on most items, so all in date non-perishables are greatly appreciated. ♦ Just a reminder that John Balch will be collecting personal care items throughout the month until October 7. He has placed a collection box in the Church narthex next to the designated food bins. ♦ A word of appreciation to the group who volunteered at the Greater Chicago Food Depository on our September 25 date. Those work credits towards supplemental food for our pantry are a true blessing! We appreciate the many ways our parishioners and friends support this ministry!

SVDP DID YOU KNOW…?

♦ In 2013, Vincentians—SVDP volunteers—all over the world are celebrating the bicentennial birth of Frederic Ozanam, the principal founder of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. ♦ Just last week on September on September 27, the Church celebrated the feast of St. Vincent de Paul, who knew that “God had sent him to bring good news to the poor”. His life inspired Frederic to create this ministry which today continues to work to help the struggling and to end poverty through systemic change. ♦ Together with your gifts of time, talent and treasure, the members of the SVDP conference at St. Cletus continue the work and mission of Ozanam. Thank you!

Keep the commandment without stain or reproach until the appearance of our Lord Jesus Christ. — 1 Timothy 6:14

The Youth Ministry program is looking for adults who would be willing to lead/host small groups in their homes for the 2013-14 Youth Ministry season. We are looking to begin small groups at the beginning of October. Please contact Amanda Birth for more information at [email protected] or (708) 215-5419.

KAIROS ATTENTION JUNIORS & SENIORS SIGN UP FOR KAIROS!

Kairos is run by teens, for teens. Your Kairos leaders have all attended the retreat, and will be there to guide you throughout the weekend. We’re high school kids, facing the same problems and challenges you are, and just like you, we all came on this retreat for different reasons. The reason our retreats work so well, is because there is no pressure. We’re there to relax, have some fun, and to simply get away from everything! In the process, we learn about ourselves, God, and our faith. Even if you aren’t Christian, or don’t know what to believe in, we want you! This weekend is about not only getting to know our God better, but to also get to know ourselves and those around us better. Kairos is a four-day Catholic based retreat starting Thursday, November 7 thru Sunday, November 10. ***Registration forms can be found online at http://www.stcletusparish.com/youth. They can also be picked up from the Rectory Office. Please return the forms to Amanda Birth at St. Cletus Youth Ministry, 700 W. 55th St., La Grange, IL 60525. Any questions? ARE YOU AN ATTRACTIVE CATHOLIC? by Steve Weidenkopf “When [the nations] hear from our lips the oracles of God, they marvel at their beauty and greatness; but afterwards, when they discover our deeds are unworthy of our words, they turn to malign the faith, declaring that it is a fable and a delusion.”—St. Clement Holiness attracts. I distinctly remembering watching the funeral of Blessed John Paul II and remarking to my wife how amazing it was that a Catholic funeral Mass was aired on national television and seen throughout the world. The secular media covered this event because of the life of the man who had been pope for over a quarter century. His life of holiness—through pain, suffering, and joy—attracted even those who were not Catholic to Christ. One doesn’t have to be pope to live a life of holiness or draw others to Christ. A listening ear to a friend in trouble, a smile to a stranger, spending time with the lonely; these are all ways in which we can live our Faith in everyday situations. Through our actions, we can either attract people to the Church or repel them. . When our lives radiate Christ, people desire to know him and the Church, like a moth is drawn to a light. If we say we love Jesus, yet do not act on his commands or the teachings of his Church, then we extinguish that light and repel people. We have been given a mission to shine the light of Christ to the nations; we accomplish this through deeds and words. This is the call for all of us at this time in history. ACTION STEP How can you live an active faith of deeds and not just words?

LIFE CHAIN - OCTOBER 6, 2013 WHAT REALLY IS IT? What is “Life Chain”? It is that spectacular event that annually draws the attention of hundreds of

thousands of Americans. The concept is simple, the effect stunning. People of all ages and faiths stand reverently in silent prayer, for one hour along a major street or highway, holding signs that proclaim the importance of human life. Always held the first Sunday in October, the Life Chain is a visual statement by the Christian community that it supports the sanctity of human life. Uniform signs (no graphic depictions) are provided for participants, so the overall impression is one of solidarity in belief and purpose. This Sunday in Illinois there are dozens of chains. The St. Cletus Chain begins at La Grange Road & west on the south side of Ogden Avenue. Joining us are many parishes in Brookfield, La Grange, Hinsdale, La Grange Park, Western Springs, Riverside, and many parishes all over metropolitan Chicago and 1800 across the USA. For more information, check on chain sites on LifeChainNet or call Marianne & Wayne Hamilton at (708) 579-0118. Please come and join us for one prayerful hour. All you have to do is show up—signs are provided.

A s Catholic Christians, one of the implications of our belief in the Incarnation is that it matters how we treat people in the here and now, and a respect for the dignity of each human being is at the core of our

beliefs about abortion and other life issues. Whether the individual in question is a pre-born child, a senior at the end of life, a convicted killer, or a person with disabilities, how we treat each person reflects our own humanity. -Most Rev. Joseph E. Kurtz, Archbishop of Louisville, “Promoting the Sanctity of Life with Courage, Compassion and Civility,” January 27, 2013.

SEEK VIRTUE In today’s first reading, Amos condemns a self-absorbed people and their morally corrupt behavior and attitudes, which he warns will bring devastation. In the Gospel, the wealthy man is not given a name; he is simply the epitome of greed and irresponsibility. His lack of caring has created a gulf between him and the beggar Lazarus that not even Abraham can bridge. In his letter to Timothy, a young bishop in the small Resurrection community of Ephesus, Paul exhorts this leader to seek virtues such as integrity, faith, and steadfastness with great gentleness. Paul also asks Timothy to keep in mind the future life with God who “dwells in unapproachable light.” This is the blessedness of all those who, like Lazarus, were once poor but who are now rich.
