9:00 am: Independence Day Mass Happy 4th of July (No breakfast on July 5th)
My dear Parishioners,
This coming weekend, we will be observing Independence
Day, our 239th birthday as a nation. American flags will be
flying throughout this vast country of ours, and that other
flag will have come down in many places across the south
and elsewhere, never to be raised again. A sign of progress?
Let us hope so. This 4th of July will be different for many of us, mainly, I believe, because of the June 17th massacre at
Mother Emmanuel AMB Church in Charleston. That trage-
dy can mark a new beginning for the march to freedom, that
Martin Luther King, Jr. — and so many others before and
after him —dreamed about and died for.
The American flag must regain its significance as the endur-
ing symbol of what this nation stands for. The pledge of
allegiance to the flag, recited ceaselessly in so many settings
has to take on real meaning in the minds and hearts of all
who utter it: “...one nation, under God, indivisible, with lib-
erty and justice for all.” Imagine if everyone who recited
that really believed it!
So, the other flag can come down and certain statues re-
moved from prominent places, but if hearts do not change,
justice and equality will remain merely words.
Here in the Archdiocese of Atlanta, we are caught up in a
masterful pastoral plan focusing on our Faith and the evolu-
tion of our parishes. Can we go forward with that plan with-
out any reference to the social and political environment in
which we live and which we must bend every effort to
change? This past May, St. Paul of the Cross held its first
workshop on that pastoral plan with stimulating results.
In the months ahead, we must build on that foundation as we
explore ever new ways of impacting our society through our
Faith. Yes, we must be concerned about our knowledge and
practice of the Faith, but perhaps we will have to move
“outside the box” when it comes to sharing it. I look forward
to moving into that portion of the journey with you.
— Fr. Jerome, C.P.
